I'd argue that bubblegum is the way she is because of her younger years, at least partially. She was a highly intelligent little girl who grew up in a radioactive wasteland. She made her own family, who betrayed her in order to gain control. Because of this, she needs control over everything. It's actually exactly the reason why all the candies are dumb. She intentionally made them much less intelligent so that they could never revolt. And while ethically questionable at best, she made an empire that lasted thousands of years with happy citizens. Not to say she was right to go about it this way, but she wasn't completely wrong either

PB’s problem was that she surrounded herself with _incredibly_ stupid people for so long that she literally began to think the straight up fascism she used to keep them from killing themselves was what was best for everyone. It also didn’t help that her right hand man, Peppermint Butler kept a horrific evil side to himself we only really got to see in Distant Lands: Wizard City, so Glob only knows how much his hidden wickedness could’ve poisoned her more. I notice a lot of people in the anti-Princess Bubblegum camp seem to forget how easily the Candy Citizens seem to self destruct without any sort of guiding hand, Root Beer Guy/Dirt Mug Man, his wife Cherry Cream Soda, and Starchy seemingly being the only known exceptions.

I think that misses the theme of Adventure Time. Most villains aren't straight up evil, and most people make mistakes that lead to worse mistakes. Finn was evil in intention for manipulating FP, which is about the worst we saw from him. PB also has the issue of being literally immortal and failing her people time and again. It would be impossible to stay good through all that. Not that any of it is an excuse for her actions, merely an explanation. Getting dethroned was the best option for her.

Ice King was the tragic result of a loving father figure giving everything to protect his adoptive daughter. Abercrombie, or whatever his name was, is a demon doing evil things because he was probably socialized into thinking that demon = bad meaning must only do bad things. Bonnie had a traumatic experience that made her believe the only way to live peacefully was to have everyone else under her thumb and everytime someone called her out on it, she was the victim and the other person was out to get her. The difference between them is that Ice King didn't know any better. His obsession with Princesses stem from Simon longing for Betty. Abercrombie realizes eventually that his way isn't the ONLY way and that what was "right" for him isn't what's right for Marcie. Bubblegum is repeatedly told that no, she's way out of line with EVERYTHING she does, but somehow calling her out on it is bad. Like she legit gets pissed that Lemongrab is stalking her people. But she only finds out because SHE'S STALKING HER PEOPLE.

Princess Bubblegum is a great character. She's a terrible person, a manipulator, and a control freak, but the show does show that she is able to later recognize these traits and start working to be better. Mostly because of her experience of losing her crown and also because of Marceline. The scene where she turns off the surveillance cameras is great imo.

Honestly, PB's biggest problem is that she constantly needs to be in control of everything and everyone. It's more than a superiority complex and it's definitely more detailed than a God complex. She sees everyone as being a level beneath her in terms of intelligence, and that's exactly how she likes it. There is some sympathy that can be given to her after what happened in the beginning with her "family" and perhaps if things had gone better and her uncle didn't betray her, she might have had a far better respect for life outside of her own. However, that doesn't forgive the horrible things she's done. Messing with Finn's heart and the Fire princess just shows how far she's willing to go down the dark path with no hesitation. Most people like the fact she ended up with Marceline and while she has become more understanding after their relationship began, there's still a lot of PB who is PB. There are even times that she flat out does not respect Marceline, and has to be brought back down to reality. Yeah, she does get happiness in her life ultimately and it will make her better in the future but it's going to be a long time before I think she could even remotely be considered a good person. If that even ever happens.

I feel like bubblegum started out genuinely caring and wanting the best for her subjects and friends, and still wants the best for those she cares about, but as she grew as a monarch she had to und how to make hard decisions, and eventually everything just became either a business exchange or a means to an end and she forgot how to be empathetic. And I love how the fandom can acknowledge that bubblegum is a bad person, while not necessarily being a bad character. Because she DOES have development, but she is so old with so many habbits and behaviors ingrained into her psyche that the series wouldn't have been long enough to show her actually becoming better. So we only see snippets here and there as the show gets into its later seasons. Yes pb is a bad person and pretty much totally indefensible, but looking into her history and what made her who she is makes her a really interesting character that is able to grow and change, but it never given the freedom to because of how she's forcing herself to be a monarch.

I mean yes that's what we've been shown in the flashback with her uncle Gumbald. She genuinely wanted a family that she can care for and be cared for in return but in the ensuing fight for control and the eventual dummyfication of her family it taught her her first lesson as a leader: if your subjects are less smart than you, they will more easily listen. And that infantilization led to her having to take care of their every need which in turn led to her caring about them turning into constant surveillance and control. It was born out of a genuine desire for community and over hundreds of years got warped into what is seen at the beginning of the show. Which is why seeing her develop into a leader that treats her subjects more like equals is so interesting, especially after losing the throne.

Theres an episode where finn convinces the princes to let him take over command of an expedition. He makes decisions, things go wrong, ppl get hurt and one eventually dies. He apologies for thinking he could lead better than she could, she takes command back and all is well...except its revealed to the viewers at the end of the episode that bubblegum was actually sabotaging finn the whole time. She was the reason someone died, just so she could have command again and feel important

That's the thing is PB slowly got this bad, or perhaps was revealed to be this bad and then she hit her own new low with trying to sabotaged the Flame Kingdoms gods and realizing all of her people absolutely hated her and the ones who wanted to conspire behind her back for spying on them she only knew because she was spying on them. I think it's really interesting to watch PB get so evil whilst still remaining a protagonist, so it's never quite directly confronted, there's big twist, you just slowly more uncomfortable with her. And then she starts to face the consequences of all she's done in the past and starts to change thanks to another character who goes through the virtual opposite character progression--Marceline. Marceline is introduced as vaguely evil and makes Finn and the audience uncomfortable cause it's so hard to judge her motivations, until ultimately she's slowly revealed to us to not only be completely wholesome but have a very sad and sympathetic past. She's the perfect foil to PB to bring the latter back from the dark side and we kind of learn they both ended up where they did at their lowest points because of their ugly break up all those years ago.

She’s smart and wise and pretty, sure. But she’s also cynical and has difficulty being empathetic towards other to a point she is sociopathic. It also makes her a tad arrogant as she believes she’s always right, even when she’s wrong. These are traits a great many “geniuses” have in fiction: Athena, Reed Richards, Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, Dr. Genus. Notice to of these names are villains, mind you. So I strongly agree that Bubblegum is a terrible person, but unfortunately, on the same level as Athena were she has both good and bad qualities. But because of her usual scientific sociopathic tendencies, her bad tends to outweigh the good. At least Pink Diamond tried to atone through Rose Quartz. But like with Endeavor in MHA, atonement is not easy as some sins can’t be forgiven.

She punished women for existing, she turned Medusa into a horrible monster because she blamed her for what Poseidon did to her, and she would actively lead women into battle so that they would be slaughtered but then actively lead her men into battle and would lead them to Victory. I will say for the episode Burning Low that you reference, she’s only trying to keep the world in tact. Bubblegum describes in detail how Flame Princess could burn out the world from the inside if exposed to extreme romance, which we do see almost happen in that episode. She’s not keeping Finn from dating FP just because of her own selfish desires, but for the fact that flame princess is very unstable and needs to learn to control her powers/emotions before she can date. Also, PB is not necessarily gaslighting Finn in that episode, more just protecting him and trying to prevent a world ending disaster. She even says in that episode that she doesn’t care about “some petty love triangle”, but rather the fate of the world. That said everything else she did was terrible

Exactly! She wasn't trying to lead him on for attention, she doesn't care about that. She usually has good intentions, like wanting to keep her people safe, but in the worst possible way lmao It's like she 100% does not care about the means to an end. Good intentions, awful execution. But she understands how morally incorrect it is to do things this way and doesn't mind being seen as evil or bad because of it.

No one seems to remember that right after this, she mellowed out Her entire kingdom turned their back on her and instead of killing of everyone like she would've done, she took the time to just get out, see if the flame king was right and make time for herself In turn the kindom did realize why they needed her but she pretty much just leaves the candy people to their own devices for most of the time because she trusts them now We should not forget that every character in adventure time changes with time, that's the title of the show even

Yep. Her being 13 and "leading finn on" probably had something to do with her BEING 13. She wasn't mentally an adult anymore and made decisions she normally wouldn't. She also wasn't trying to stop finn and FPs relationship out of jealousy, Jake only thought that because he didn't listen to what she had to say, and she went about telling Finn in a weird way that could have been better, but still. She definitely wasn't trying to get him interested in her again. And if we can sympathize with FP's trauma and say she's good despite burning down an entire city when we first meet her, we should also sympathize with PBs trauma and understand that she's not perfect as a ruler but she's clearly not malevolent. She just has a tendency to not handle difficult situations very well, which she improves on throughout the series. Though I will admit that in the finale when we see how the candy kingdom has turned into a literal prison that abducts people is a very dark ending.

People keep saying that PB changed and she's a good person now, but at the end of the series you can see the big ass robots she made collecting the candy citizens and trapping them forever while stepping on others kingdom's cities and citizens. We don't see her in the end and her kingdom fell completely, but she's still trying to take control over other ppl even if she's not there physically to do so (we also see Marceline roaming around Ooo, i suppose she's looking for PB) She's awful till the end.

PB's crown has a jewel of enchiredion. It has the ability to slightly dumbify, subdue, and co-erce non-aggressive characters, especially effective with candy people. That's why she left Candy Kingdom right away when Wax Hustler usurped the throne because the palace was also a weapon that amplifies the gem's power. She's the control freak mother that will keep her disobedient children safe. That's why she's so afraid of the idea that one day she will leave her candy people.
