@@PrincessCutLawnCare I appreciate your clear concise videos and especially your budget friendly tips. That blue def video got me thinking. I make plenty of urea. I'm healthy and not on any sort of medications like antibiotic that I wouldn't want to put on my lawn. I'll bet that if I filled one of those 1/2 gallon cranberry juice bottles with pure liquid gold, dumped in my 4 gal backpack sprayer filled the rest of the way with water, that would probably be a pretty good dilution.. I haven't tried it yet, but I have a feeling that's going to account for at least some of the nitrogen I supply to my lawn next year. One thing I do now is that when I clean the filters on my fish tanks I take that fish poop water and dump it on my azaleas and forsythias. They seem to absolutely love it.

And the Groundskeeper II is hard to beat for raking in seed. On a budget, at least buy a SunJoe… unless your yard is microscopic dethatch inch with a rake isn’t worth it. I dethatch several times a month as well as verticut. Unless you have an older yard and low fertilizer inputs thatch is likely to be one of the most important focuses in any lawn and a rake would cost a fortune in lost time vs. a dethatcher.

Protip for next year. I got that Scotts hand crank spreader for $5 on clearance at Walmart in late October of last year. It seems like they clearance out a bunch of lawn & garden stuff so they can make room for more Christmas stuff. The battery operated Scotts spreader gets horrible reviews however.. Ryobi make s 18V battery powered hand held spreader. I believe I paid $50 for it (tool only) Best $50 I ever spent! It is prety much my go to spreader. Most of what I spread goes down at about 4-5 pounds per 1,000sft The hopper easily holds 5 pounds of most product. I may have to stop and refill it often, but I can still cover my whole 5,000 sft yard in about 20-25 minutes. If you've already got Ryobi batteries this might be a good option for you!

@PrincessCutLawnCare
@PrincessCutLawnCare 2 жыл бұрын
Mid spring and mid fall are the best times for cool season lawns to be leveled. Also top dressing is not needed when overseeding, the thatch layer will hold enough moisture to encourage the grass to germinate. The seed does not need to be below anything to germinate, it just needs to be directly pressed into the soil.

How do you feel about a drop spreader for overseeing?
@PrincessCutLawnCare
@PrincessCutLawnCare 2 жыл бұрын
Drop spreader is great for going around the edges, but i would use a broadcast spreader for "inside' the lawn. Drop spreaders tend to be very inconsistent in their application so i would not use it for the entire lawn as it can lead to striping of the seed

My sprinklers were disconnected on my 1/2 acre property for 1.5 years while new landscaping was slowly being done (contractors were scarce during early covid years). I watered maybe 1x per week with an inexpensive sprinkler and thought I would have to re-sod my lawn once everything was done. The grass looked almost dead. However, just in case it worked, I overseeded and was amazed by the results. My revived lawn looks better than others around me. However, I bought a soil mix that I spread around just before the seed. Do you think it made a difference? It cost a lot more than the seed.

Hattrick is in my front yard… my only regret is not doing it at 100% because there is virtually zero disease pressure where I live. In my experience Hattrick also does awesome in very dense shade mowed around 2”. I haven’t tried Hattrick mowed low in dense shade, but it actually beat out all my fine fescues and bluegrass and is crazy dark and thriving… didn’t expect a rye to dominate under a willow but my theory is the dark color (extra chlorophyll) gives it the means to produce adequate carbs with significantly less sun. That’s my favorite grass seed right there and it beat out Fireball by a pretty good margin for color if I remember right. I like the Solo chest mount spreader for seed, but not as budget friendly, so doesn’t quite fit in this video. Worth noting… I planted Scott’s rye in one pot, Hattrick in another… Pangea GLR in another. The Scott’s looked like total crap compared to the other two after a few months… disease, coarser blade, and lesser color, but mostly disease. Scott’s makes great fertilizer for a budget (Fall Lawn Food is a premium prill size w/ moderate Potassium), but their grass seed is coated and potentially inferior cultivars via my potting results. Pangea may be a superior grass where disease pressure is high depending on what is desired. NTEP… what would crazies like us do without it?

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Just one emphasis… there is virtually zero disease pressure in my area. When it’s hot it’s only a few days over 85° and no rain when it is hot and even when it is hot night time lows aren’t over 65° more than one or two days, and no chance of snow mold either. I don’t get 5 consecutive days of +85° highs and +65° lows… even one day of disease pressure is rare much less 5. I feel like I remember Hattrick having mediocre disease resistance, so that might be worth checking out before you go all out since we’re in different areas. In the Pacific NW we get about 2” of snow a year and maybe 5-10 days over 90° total. Pretty close to no disease pressure with most grass types. I planted Hattrick w/ Pangea just in case disease hit me, but that was before I knew that our weather is not far from ideal for avoiding disease so I don’t think the Pangea was necessary. One plant by another & I can tell which one is Hattrick but Pangea was supposed to be a darker variety also w/ amazing disease resistance and it’s supposed to be a favorite on golf coarser with nearly the highest “stand quality” but the color is far from Hattrick on a low mow. If you can avoid disease I don’t think you’ll regret a monostand of Hattrick, but w/ disease it’s a bit risky… a monostand if it is my current plan on my next lawn if I can still get it when I seed. And some random rambling below… I like to be able to see the seed head and pull it if it isn’t rye (makes poa mitigation more guaranteed and fail safe w/ no color judging) so I don’t know if I’ll ever do a 100% bluegrass yard simply because of the asset of a highly differentiated seed heads. My lawn is a freak show for color in my area, but it would be even crazier w/ 100% Hattrick. It seems like the only question I’ve been getting asked is some variant of “is that real grass?” recently. Rocking the checkerboard pattern and I’m about to increase my spoon feeding rates to about .10#N/week AMS + ≈.05P|.10K via Jack’s Nutrients 5-12-26. I think I’m removing SOP(K) and MAP(P) from my future program and instead switching to Jacks 5-12-26 for all my P & K needs… properly ratio’s micro’s in good quality for soil use… mostly I like it as a K source because the cost is similar to SOP, but I like the ratios and quality of all the ingredients and how balanced it is when combined with AMS. Jacks is lacking as a foliar (EDTA molecules are too big), so before guests are coming, ferrous sulfate is better via something like FeRROMEC @ 2oz / gallon, or MicroGreene @ 3-4oz / gallon but for soil application Jacks is better than Super Juice in terms of quality without the 100-fold markup and a tiny little bag. I got lucky and never bought an ounce of Super Joke, but I did go for a ride on the humic train for a while when I just wanted to ‘do something’ w/o requiring evidence… shocker… no results and no CEC change despite wasting ≈ $150. The only GCF product I could kind of recommend would be MicroGreene… it’s super cheap low quality ingredients, but it’s perfect for a balanced foliar application if someone feels like blowing a little money and only seeing a very temporary boost. Vivax was the wetting agent I settled on although I’d be open to try other things in the future like tournament ready (Rey Ito seems to prefer solid form wetting agents for some reason and obviously he knows 100x more than me), but the Air-8 wetting agent can go in the garbage. Humic12 is brown water. RGS probably offers some benefit in the right situation, but I’d generally be reluctant to do the opposite of all the good T-Nex does, so RGS confuses me a bit… maybe a good thing during fall(?) on cool season grass potentially but do roots really need motivation to grow? My program has become more simplified the more I learn… my keeper products that go in my front lawn are AMS, Jack’s 5-12-26, Vivax (or some other quality wetting agents), foliar FeRROMEC or MicroGreen (before guests only… low rate), and some T-Nex when the GDD’s allow some gap between applications and maybe T-Nex extended before & during seed head even though it’s kind of a pain to apply so often. Urea, MOP, SOP, Scottt’s Fall lawn food, ProPeat (AMS based but liquids only in the front), Peter’s Pro 24-8-16, GrowORR, etc. go in the second’s category which is plenty suitable for my back yard. I’ve become very picky about my nitrogen source… liquid AMS only.

Just followed these steps to a T last Sunday. 1. Mow low, #2 setting on my Milwaukee mower, #1 was straight up scarifying it, didn’t feel comfortable with that. 2. Dethatched 3. Used the mower to bag the thatch 4. Spread the seed, Rented lawn roller, filled probably 2/3 full, rolled the lawn twice 5. I have been watering 4x a day for 7-10 minutes, to try to keep the ground moist. Average temps here in KY have been about 80 high. Still a little concerned that five days later most of my seeds still sit on top of the soil looks like no germination has taken place so far. Do you think I should be super worried yet? I’m perfectly fine using my timer to keep watering them the next couple weeks, just not sure how long you all wait before you determine the seed is going to germinate or won’t.
