I doubt you will ever see this comment I'm adding (June 2023), but this IS exactly the help I'm looking for again. I don't print that often these days and my original viewing was a few years ago ~ thank you very much

I have been printing on Epson 2800, and now 600, for a number of years always unsuccessfully searching for a solid instructional of correctly setting up the interface between Lr and the printer. I just found your four part series and want to thank you for laying out the perfect how to tutorial. Epson and Adobe should refer all purchasers of their product to this excellent KZbin presentation. Thank You!

Wow! Don't know how I missed this one. I have been someone who doesn't print their photos but am in the process of upgrading my entire system except for a printer which I dont have room or great need for because I'd rather use a Lab. Your explanation clarified lots for me. Thanks Anthony

Thanks Antony. I've been trying for years to get my printed images like my screen images. I've calibrated my screens for years, but I never really understood soft proofing or why I needed to do it. I now get excellent prints every time.

Wow, I hope you are still making videos. You sound like a very stoic Emo Phillips, which I assume has to do with you both sharing a regional connection. But, that being said, I find Emo Phillips soothing and so you qualify as stoically soothing. Good work.

So to get the the best print of your black lab, could you load different paper profiles and then buy the paper that works best? Or is it a limitation of the printer? Could a pro print lab overcome the difficulty? Thank you for doing this series. Lots of stuff to think about.

Thanks for the great video on this subject. Question: After soft-proofing photos for an specific paper/printer by using their recommended ICC profile, do I need to use same ICC profile when exporting photos for print or should we use just use sRGB for the exporting before send to the lab for printing? Thanks in advance.

Hi Anthony: great video! I learnt a lot from your videos. Just a quick question after I watched this video: I send out my photo to print. So after I do all the modifications in soft proofing, do I just export my photo from here or have to go to Print module and save the file? What's the difference? Thanks in advance.

very nice tuto explaining how to fix out of gamut red zones i didn't know what to do, perceptual/relative. isn't "simulate paper and ink" better in CC2019 version ? lot of tutos activate it and we see the image is dull and flat and we need to add contrast... i have purchased a SC-P600 printer and use "epson premium glossy paper" and results are too different from display (calibrated). my main problem is brightness. in soft proofing copy i need to increase a lot brightness compensation to have same background,...

I believe theres a bug in using the soft proofing view in Lightroom, when I viewed an edited raw file in soft proofing and tinkered around with what you showed, i.e. the gamut warnings and the adjustment to deal with it, when I left the soft proofing view and went back to working on the raw file, I tried to view the before and after view but nothing happened or it would show a before of an edit of the file I did earlier but I couldn't view the unedited raw file before any editing. The only way I've found to get the before and after view working normally again is to delete the file from Lightroom and re-import the file again. Of course doing so you'll have to re-edit the file all over again. I'm using the non subscription version of Lightroom with the latest update.

Hello, I wanted to thank you for the very informative video. I have been in photography for 40 years. Owned a large commercial photo lab back in the wet processing days. But never got around to printing till recently. The reason was I wanted to print to some fine art papers that commercial printers do not offer as a choice. So now I am learning the world of printing digital. I did find one tip I wanted to pass along. I have a Epson Photo Stylus Pro R2000. I could not figure out how to get the ICC profiles into the printer driver. The printer driver paper properties only showed Epson papers. I called them and was told to ignore those settings as the software {Photoshop and Lightroom) over rides those settings and to use the ICC profiles in the software. So for those who are trying to get the ICC profiles to show up in the printer settings, you cannot.

I"m trying to soft proof using a CMYK icc profile, GRACoL2013_CRPC6.icc , with Lightroom Classic release 9.3. It doesn't show up in the extended list of available profiles. Am I missing something? I'm about to run a relatively big job with a print shop and would like to soft proof my images. Hoping to at least get close to what they produce. Thanks in advance for your insight.

Hi Anthony, In this video you mention a profile but I am hard of hearing and it sounds like 'IPC' Profile; if it is not could you please reply to this email with the name of the profile. My printer is an A3+ EPSON 1100 and I intend following your 1st part to buy the Spider 5 Pro calibrator, for my printed pictures imo rarely come out the screen colour, being generally darker. Thank you so much for altruistically posting these videos in your easy to listen way of instruction. Seasonal Greetings, Joe

At the very least the soft proofings ability to show out of gamut for a particular paper profile could be used to help pick a paper to reproduce the colors more accurately as opposed to trying to adjust the colors on the photo to work on a particular paper. In otherwords use the soft proofing as a tool to pick the paper that will work best instead of a tool to adjust color to work on a paper thats already been decided to be used when there may be better options.

To the gods of electromagnetic light I have a soft proofing conundrum, are you sitting comfortably? Now let me begin. Out of gamut was a best guess way, back in the 90s that Photoshop provided for people to visualise a way that artist could view, the unprintable/non viewable Hues. (Both Photoshop and modern printers have evolved greatly since 1998 I believe and its introduction). With this best guess named gamut warning you could attempt adjustment the work to keep it as faithful as possible to the original. I believe that this method is legacy and was superseded by the more accuracy and modern ICC profiles. These profiles are specific to the printer and its relationship to the medium selected. So we should be adjusting the ICC rendered image and ignoring out of gamut witch (pun intended) is legacy and inaccurate. From my study we should not conflate the two. This is not a criticisms of any ones ideas or work flow I am just looking for knowledge and I am always happy with been proven wrong after all every day is a school day. If we use ICC and Gamut we are mistakenly combining two methods of image adjustment that should/must not be conflated. Lets say for the sake of this diatribe/conversation that all variables are fixed. For a moment exclude all the possible nuances and variations, Calibration, lumen output, kelvin on the monitor matches the kelvin output of your controlled viewing environment etc. Then the only variable which can affect the output is the ICC profile. Lets say this is our hypothetical fact to stop all the yes but replies. Keep with my mindless wanderings please. Now look at this situation in a practical way. If when I apply the ICC profile the profile provided by the wonder nerds who work on the specific printer and rock it to sleep every evening, the nerds who know which colour wire to cut to stop the end of time then the results displayed are as good as it can be for that set up. Give or take +/- a pinch of salt in the devils eye. Our image and request has pushed the printer to its limits with the added throttling of the chosen medium gloss paper acrylic glass etc. The algorithms have metamorphosed the brightest hues corralled all colour possibility into the new profile so that 100% red is still 100% red but in a different algorithm. In our idiotic and pretend world we can do know more to this perfectly colour calibrated image. We are looking at the best that that printer can do, with the request given a Tiff file in adobe RGB. Now let us say that we require to tweak this image as we know that transmissive light from the monitor will always be different to the reflective light of a print (we are back in the real world now) then these gentle adjustments should only be applied to the ICC profile to attempt to match the original. If we start toggling off/on the legacy and woefully judgemental and inaccurate Gamut warning in Photoshop CC then we are at serious risk of over egging the pudding. The ICC has brought the colour gamut in check already so why would there still be out of gamut colours when we toggle the gamut warning on and off. The only reason is its an old left over legacy and it should never be used in combination with ICC profiling. Does anyone else feel my pain or am I alone in this padded cell? The long and short of it is the ICC profile has brought all hue within gamut already so a gamut check Is not required. Now I am just a muppet on a string so if anyone can help me dance to a better tune then I am most ready if you are asking.
