With inspiration from fellow KZbinrs like Timothy Ditzler and watching his channel • The Importance of Prin... I have decided I need to print my work.
Having spent £6 a print from a local lab I started to research printers. I used to have an Epson 1290 and that was ok, but due to inactivity it got clogged up and just wouldn't print great. A friend of mine had a Canon printer, the same model I ended up with actually lol. I looked at the Canon Pro 100s and 10s, both amazing printers but were over kill both on budget and specs for what I wanted.
The Pixma ip8750 seemed on paper to fit what I wanted from a printer but at a fraction of the cost... would it be any good?!
The ip8750 uses 6 ink technology to lay down colour, CMYK and then has an extra black plus a grey, and as 70% of my work is black & white it seemed a logical choice.
I need to test it and look at the best settings for me, but with the first test print I am very pleased. Not really a fan of glossy paper, I have bought the matte paper, but will also now do more research on paper

Great Video man, got me looking at digital printers for my self now, Normally do everything in the darkroom but leaving uni soon wont have a full darkroom at home so this might be a way to keep me printing my work

Josh ClackMedia as I mentioned I love geeking out on gear and spent hours researching the right model for my budget. Canon do some very nice printers and there are a few in this type. A lot seem to be those daft all in one scanner/fax/copy printers which I didn't want. If I had the budget I would have gone for the Pro 100, but this was the best compromise for my needs. Sounds cool having your own darkroom, wish I had the space. As I mentioned a few other KZbinrs and especially Timothy Ditzler got me excited about printing my work, you can not beat holding an actual print of your work and not being able to use the darkroom ever day this is the next best thing 😊👍

Thanks so much for the shout out! Means the world to me! Nothing better than having a printer dedicated to solely printing your photographs...It was a game changer for me. You can learn so much about your photography by holding a print in your hands! I as well think it's pretty strange that they don't supply you with a printer cable??? Come on Canon!!!! The cables aren't cheap either. Thanks for sharing Richard!

Timothy Makeups thanks for inspiring me to actually get on and do it. Yeah looking forward to making prints, testing paper and as you say hopefully it will help me when taking the image. This should sit nicely with the darkroom printing too. But watching people like yourself on KZbin I feel bad my work as amateur as it is dies on the computer 😞 Do you print your black and white work as greyscale? My first print had a magenta cast

always print hard wired as wifi doesn't give you the quality you need. As someone who like you Graphic Designer.....photographer in Black and White...I was impressed enough by your review to buy one and at that price it is really good value :)

I've been printing the last couple of years with a Canon 10 and the Canon 100 and it's changed the entire way I approach my photography. I wish they had a dedicated B/W printer, I just don't understand why that isn't available. Cheers, Rich, looking forward to all your printing, brother.

Hi John wow awesome, if I had the money I probably would have gone for the Pro 100, but it still would have been overkill for what I need at this stage. Especially as I am learning and experimenting with lots of photographic processes right now. Yes very much like I wish Canon would make a killer stills only camera, why don't they produce a killer black & white printer with like 5 or 6 different shaded ink carts... We can but dream. I like that Phase One had the guts and has produced a black & white only back, need to win the lotto to buy that at nearly 60 grand :/ How does the 10 and 100 stack up next to each other? And can you tell noticeably the difference?
@johnkosterimages
@johnkosterimages 6 жыл бұрын
The differences are very, very subtle...the 10 has a finer, tighter ink pattern to it. The colors are almost indistinguishable. The big difference is in B/W. That's where spending the extra money makes a difference. So much more grayscale and dynamic range with the 10. I do all of my B/W printing on it. I will say that doing home printing is a huge commitment, it takes time to really learn how to do it right, between learning printer profiles and paper and how to print in LR. But the process is really satisfying. The only other thing is inks. There is no way to get around it, OEM inks are really the only way to go at this point, and that gets very expensive. I've been playing with third party inks this whole year and try as I must, they just don't look as good as OEM. Would you settle for the Leica M??? Thats a helluva camera and its monochrome. Another thing I'm going to buy when I win the lotto!! lol. Keep it up, Rich, your videos are great.

Oh wow, that sounds awesome, does the 10 have more grey/black inks then? Maybe one day I will upgrade :) Yeah I will stick to OEM inks, I have been watching a lot of Jose Rodriguez who seems to be a printer guru. I tend to be old school being a designer so I print from either photoshop or indesign. That is one camera I am not a fan of, the Leica, well all rangefinders to be honest. I much prefer the SLR way of viewing and shooting, that's why the PhaseOne black & white back appeals

Great video again Richard, I am in between buying a printer or setting up a full darkroom..if being honest with myself I don't really have the space or time for analogue prints..the digital print is really hard to ignore for its convenience but I shoot film and I am trying to keep it all authentic.. just can't decide what to invest in as money is tight. Again great video 👍

Ian Anthony McCormick thank you 😊 I do know what you mean, it's hard not to get seduced by the Pro Canon printers like the Pro 10, but replacing the inks is very expensive. Haven't checked this one yet, but with the Canon cash back and the offer at PC World this was a great choice. Depending on the size of prints you want to do, there is an A4 version for £49. Obviously you can't beat darkroom prints, even the process is a great escape and some quiet time, but it does mean having a space and chemicals etc. Tough decision, I guess it comes down to how many prints you want to make and what your going to do with them, either way it's great to have a physical print in the hand rather than looking at them on the screen. Another alternative is if you have a local community darkroom you can use, like The Photo Parlour here in Nottingham, there is also Leicester Lo-fi's, but I'm sure there are ones in other areas. There is a Kickstarter for a new one in London. You will have to let me know which way you go 😊👍

Hi Glenn, thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. I am going to do some tests and see what it can do, but yes it would be cool to review it as even from the first setup test print it's looking good 😊 Need also to find some images that will test the tonal range, I may also print out the house image as I have a darkroom print to compare it with, plus prints from a high end large format Epson printer

Richard Rollinson - My Analog Life..... Yes Richard it will be interesting to compare the two together, Analog to Digital......once I am set up properly... I fancy getting back to the old sepia tone stuff..I've got my eye on a medium format enlarger just for B/W.... I've already got an old Paterson C35, it only does 35mm .... but I must say I am impressed with your printer.... it's nice .... 👍🏻

Glenn Fryer that sounds awesome, be cool to hear how you get on and maybe you can give me some tips and advice. I've yet to try toning, I am still learning the basics of the darkroom and alternative printing processes,. Spoiler alert, I'm just uploading a video on my first go at Cyanotype printing. I seem to be on a journey of discovery at the moment lol Yeah the printer seems good so far, fingers crossed it will do what I want it to do and once I get to grips with it I could send you a print 😊

Hi I too came to the same conclusion, as you say I too get some colour casting which is annoying. If you find a way of avoiding this I'd love to know how. The printer is capable of producing top quality prints which I have sold at shows and has top placings in club competitions. Thank you for a great vlog...😃

Hi Richard. Great videos, I am really enjoying watching them and seeing the enthusiasm you have for photography!! Quick question... I have just bought the ip8750 and I'm having a huge magenta cast issue with it... Can you tell me, did you sort your problem out?? If so would you mind sharing your solution with me please? It really would save a fellow photographer from the asylum!!! Thanks in advance Paul

Hi Paul It is something I am working on, but I touch on it in my printer 2 week update. As a work around I am converting my files to greyscale and printing from photoshop at the moment. When I figure it out I will make an update. I am wondering if I need to change my files to CMYK as its a CMYK printer rather than trying to print in RGB :)

have read that can have magenta cast when fresh but dicapates when dry.? torn between one of these and the XP960 Epson ,no it doesn't to A3+ but has scanner for occasional use,but believe should the need arise the canon printhead is much easier to remove for intensive cleaning than the xp960.as well as the Xp being more photo biased .hmmm.

Great video Richard. I have had this printer for a few months now and bought it for doing mainly black and whites like yourself. I have had some good results and some not so good, i struggle with the cast colors i get on the prints sometimes,i would love to know if you have the same issues or if you have found a way of solving them,i know its a lot to do with different papers and profiles and stuff, but would appreciate any input or advice, Thanks again

Hi Jamie I haven't got too indepth just yet as I'm going through finding the right paper at the moment, but I have noticed what you mean. I have had a magenta cast and also more cyan prints, but that was when I printed my files in RGB. At the moment while doing my test files with different paper I am printing greyscale within photoshop and the prints are coining out nice. I am unsure if its using the grey ink this way, I need to investigate. For my tastes I am using Satin paper and its giving me what I want

Hello Richard, Thank you for this video. I am interested in this printer and like your review as it has helped sway me towards this printer . I have just a couple of questions I hope you can help me with, are you still printing using a cable and what OS do you use? The Canon site I saw had compatible OS Mac but didn't go past OS 10.6. Thank you for your help
@RICHARDROLLINSONDESIGNPHOTOGRA
@RICHARDROLLINSONDESIGNPHOTOGRA 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Norman. Yes I still use a cable to print with this printer. I must prefer hard wired connections over wifi/bluetooth, much more reliable. At the moment I am running OS 10.13.6 and mainly printing through photoshop, although I do use InDesign too. I am going to be making an updated video on this printer and the cost or running compared to buying in prints. Don't get me wrong it is a great printer for the price point, not as much flexibility as the PRO printers, but gives great results, well depending on the paper you use. Thank you for taking the time to reach out. Sorry its taken me a few days to reply I am trying to do a 30 day no social media challenge, but hard when trying to run a few events lol

trippleknowswhatsup hi thanks :) Yes this printer works with Windows 10, haven't tried it myself as I am all Apple Mac based. I am in the testing phase and also looking for the right paper, but so far for the price I am extremely happy with it. Obviously something like the Pro 10s would be a better printer and has some Canon software, but as I said I am happy with the results so far when I use satin paper for my tastes. I got this as I will mainly print black & white images, the pro series has more coloured inks for finer details. I think I will do an update video this weekend and give my thoughts on in after the first few weeks 😊 Thanks for watching 👍

Bought the IP8750 around 5wks ago and after initial setup did a test print using a free pack of canon photo paper plus glossy ii. Initial thoughts in comparison to my previous prinnter the Epson R2400 is wow! My preferred paper however is Fotospeed PFLustre275 A3 paper. They even offer to create an ICC profile for free! Purchased paper from Speed Graphic with link here www.speedgraphic.co.uk/paper/fotospeed_pf_lustre_275/21130_p.html

DigitalSWebVideos awesome, thank you for the link I will definitely check that out. I am in the testing phase and getting some varied results when printing from different applications :/ How did you handle the warm magenta cast? So far my results are great and I guess the end result is down to personal preference. I am guessing the 275 refers to the weight of the paper, which should be nice if it is 275g. Not actually seen lustre paper, but looking forward to running some tests 👍😊 Thank you for taking the time to comment, much appreciated

Yes the 275 refers to the weight. As regards a magenta cast I haven't so far noticed any. I did a quick search as regards your issue with a possible answer here community.usa.canon.com/t5/Professional-Photo-Printers/Magenta-Cast-on-New-Pixma-Pro-100/m-p/129502#M1510 I use Lightroom for all photo printing from original raw images after any processing obviously and I haven't used any custom ICC profile as yet. I'm PC based with the addition of the monitor being calibrated.
