True. I especially like them for situations like being on public transport. You can just push a cape to the back, without taking it off, if you get warm. A coat, you have to take off completely, which can be awkward if it's crowded and you're carrying bags and stuff and don't really have free hands.

The only thing they're not good for is if you carry a rucksack on the regular, which I do, to keep my hands free when shopping and bicycling. Otherwise I'd wear capes galore!

@@aprillen Depends - sometimes you can wear the cape over the backpack. I've done that with a raincape when hiking. Less sweaty than a raincoat.

@@aprillen Yes, that's true, unfortunately. I've had that issue, as well. Although I guess, one could construct a cape with slits for the straps to go through at mid back. They would have to be detachable then, of course. Like purse straps. And putting the rucksack on would be a little awkward. Would be a fun look, though!

I actually would still wear a red union suit up until last winter where I got sick of pooping out of the butt slit, so I upgraded to regular two piece long John’s with the tall socks, of course boots as well. Instead of breeches I use a woolen set of trousers with braces or a woolen overall set. If you break it down, men’s clothes really haven’t changed as much as women’s

The shirt was modern ... it had a brand label on the chest pocket. The shoes were modern too, unless they had speed lace hooks back in the 1890s. [I could be wrong.] I'm sure the exact cuts did exist back then ... Izabela and Lucas would not make that mistake. A wonderful outfit!

I’m rather curious about the longjohns, what fabric were they made out of? How does one best get something similar today? I’ve heard stories of people wearing them in some sort of knitted fabric, and the descriptions are so vague that I can’t figure out if it’s a jersey-like fabric or literally knitted with wool and knitting needles. If you don’t mind me asking, where could I find more information about what labourers and lower class people wore in this era? In my daily life, I work in a shop selling various craft supplies, so what would that kind of man be wearing? I’ve looked into my family history for facts and inspiration and I know I’ve got sheep farmers and generally quite a lot of the common folk in my ancestry. Speaking of hats, I have to say that while I’ve tried a Homburg, it did not suit me well, and I’ll remain a baker’s boy cap kind of man until something significant changes.

They still make long johns / union suits / combinations, though they're not easy to find. Here are a couple of USA sources, there are probably more. LL Bean used to sell them, in Duofold fabric (mostly wool with a cotton lining). They don't have them now, I don't know if they stopped carrying them completely or they only have them in fall / winter (it's late May as I write). Vermont Country store has bright red cotton ones in stock. Surprisingly, they're only $25. I have never worn either, so I can't tell you about quality or fit. I have a couple of very old Duofold tops, when the outer layer was 100% wool, they're still in good condition.

I've heard the same, but not cofnirmed it - Edward VIII certainly liked wider knots, and I gather that the 'Double Windsor' or 'Full Windsor' was used to emulate that look. So, the name may be based on the later popularity of the knot, but the tying method likely predates Edward's use.

Depending on the fit of the britches you could skip them, but for vigourous activity it's nice to have a back up.

The cape is obviously not a full circle but is also more than a half circle. Would it be closer to a three quarter circle maybe, asking because I'm hoping to make one - have the wool fabric already - but experiments show that the half circle isn't loose enough for free movement but the full circle is really a bit too full and gets in the way. Love the outfit, so smart. It's a pity that so many today opt for jeans and a hoodie when with a little bit of effort they could look so smart and be appropriately dressed for all occasions. This being just as practical in the town (long trousers rather than breeches) as in the countryside. Merry Christmas to all involved in your videos from Ireland.
