This is just my take on it, but I think that the March to Baghdad kept him sane in a way. While he was in action, he had something to keep him focused: his job. Driving and operating the radio. It was something to keep his mind occupied, which meant he was less focused on the idiocy of the leadership in the Battalion. When the invasion was over and they heard they were going home, he had no more outlet. Nothing to keep his mind occupied, so he lashed out.

This is the most realistic military show/movie/series ever. I have even re-watch it when I feel alone and want to reminisce about to sucky but funny ass days over there and the camaraderie with the guys. I try to show this to regular civilians who have never been in the military and they’re not all that entertained and usually don’t finish it. It’s OK though because it’s only for us. You know who you are.

it's actually genius how this series portrays how a war can be so strange and asimmetrical that for these guys it esentially boiled down to a road trip with incredible tedium but with mind-numbingly intense combat sprinkled here and there as well

If there's one thing more entertaining than watching "Generation Kill," it's watching "Generation Kill" in the company of non-Marines. They just look puzzled, chuckle nervously, get a little slack-jawed like they don't know what to make of it. And I sit there thinking how stranger and funny it is, the things you miss once you're out for awhile. I laughed my ass off when they were singing "Loving You" while driving down the road. Not the act itself, that is. I just remember so many times out in the field being uncomfy and miserable, knocking back and forth between boredom and tension, until the only thing you can do is just some sort of incredibly silly, pointless shit until you can start to smile or laugh at the absurdity of it all.........

@@JnEricsonx if it needs to be an antagonist (like his sons) I'd say he'd make a decent Keaton (if they made the character older than written), Gaunt, or Barlow. For a protagonist I could see him as Father Callahan.
