I did the process for my Prius 3rd gen battery. I put a load of 24 volts on each cell for a period of one minute and take initial voltage, after one minute voltage and then voltage of all the cell one by one after completing the process for the whole 28 cells. I repeated the process for the cells that i doubts after assessing their voltage and i found 3 cells that were returning a low voltage compared to others and i changed that. No CHECK LIGHTS so far. Thanks for this informative video @ Just Vlad

Dr. Prius is better than Torque Pro because it tells you the most critical parameter for battery evaluation and that is Internal Resistance of the module. Voltage is too difficult to use accurately because of the necessity of load which is too much of a variable. Voltage is almost worthless to me but IR can pinpoint the bad module in seconds.

Note of caution with the packs. The modules can thicken over time. If so, when you remove the modules and then go to put them back in, you will need to have a 30 inch pipe clamp handy to gently nudge them into place so that the anchor screws line up from below. You may also need to give them a love tap with a small hammer for other direction alignment (that's not as bad as it sounds :-). If your batteries are slightly thickened like mine and you do not have these pipe clamps, you may be screwed as far as getting the modules back in the pack. It is best to clamp two modules at a time to the secured block and secure them as you go. Another practical tip, to remove the pack from car by yourself, best to straddle the pack with your feet, with your head facing the controllers and fan. Put one foot on back seat middle support and the one where spare goes. Lift with legs and move the driver side end first. Lift the support leg over the little hump and then set it down on the other side. Then with your eyes trained on the various wires at the controller end, gently swing the controller end out and set it down on the metal platform. At this point, with the pack resting on the metal platform, reposition your right leg as far back in the spare tire well as you can get it. Then, using your legs again, reposition the whole thing as far towards the back of the car as you can get it and rest it on the metal platform. At this point, get yourself completely out of the car. From the back you can now pick up the whole thing and remove it from the car. always use your legs as much as possible and when carrying the pack keep it as close to your body as possible. I suggest wrapping the pack in a towel to avoid the sharp edges while carrying it. center your hands around the battery, as this is the heavy part. the battery pack weighs about 80 lb so always use your legs as much as you can. this will help you to control it better and also might save you a problem with your back. Just thought I'd let y'all know :-) Oh, in addition to the Torque app there is also the Dr Prius app. I highly recommend this app. Also, the big Orange plug that you pull to deactivate the battery pack, has a special little nipple on its handle. That is used to remove the two orange safety plugs. That scheme is Toyota's clever way of ensuring that you have deactivated the batteries before messing with the pack. Hold the safety plug at its base and align the male-female parts and rotate, as the safety plug arrows indicate. They will come right off. BTW, I devised a method for making a modification that allows one to establish modules 23-28 (the ones furthest out from the controller) as 'plug-and play'. I can swap these modules in and out without having to take the pack out of the car. I place the weakest modules in that area. If anyone wishes me to describe how to establish this plug and play area, just ask.

Nice work. These are not so hard to work on as people think. Couple of tips I got from another video. I probably would have cleaned those contacts and then tried the car again. That may have been why those cells were not being charged .. but since it fell flat on a load. The cell may have been damaged. Second.. to get those red plug retainers out. Use the end of the disconnect handle. There is a little pin sticking out.. use that and rotate.. and those little clips will come out without using a screw driver and possibly damaging them. Overall great work though... And nice car. That 5 trim package is really nice.

May I suggest you go to priusapp.com/ This developer has tested 100s of OBD2 adapters. Go to the site and click on the drop down menu “What OBD2 to Buy”. May I remind you there are many Chinese knock off, bogus adapters on eBay. So this developer has a few recommended OBD2 adapters. The developers App is called Dr Prius, the specifications for which are in the App Store. Last week, based on the recommendation of the site I bought a second hand Carista 2 adapter( $10). Using the free version of Dr Prius App, I was able to read the voltages of each and every module of my 2011 Prius’ high voltage pack.

Use the orange breaker plug to disconnect the orange clips. On the tip of the arm on the orange breaker plug, you will see a small circular key point that is inserted into those two orange clips. Once inserted, a quarter turn in the direction the arrows point on those clips and your clip comes free. No need to pry anything.
@peterpan310007 жыл бұрын
fyi in order to get a read out of the battery banks among other things, you need to get an obd2 to bluetooth and also get Torque Pro which is 5 bucks afterwards you will need to search the web for Prius Torque sensor modules so you can get the battery bank voltages as well as access to other sensors like SOC and battery temp and cooling fan measurements.

Wow! Thanks for that video. Was that just a 12v 1amp trickle charger you used to equalize the entire pack? How did you wire that transformer to load test? Just put the battery cell between the primary and secondary winding?
@JustVlads7 жыл бұрын
+Starr M to balance the battery quicker I used the small charger for about 6hrs, but the battery will equalize without it if all modules are wired parallel. It will take a while though. About the transformer I just needed some thing to pull high amperage to see the cell condition. I used the low voltage side of the transformer, which was the secondary on mine. Using a headlight bulb to load it also works good. Hope this helps

Im in the process of refurbishing the pack on my 2005 prius with 200,000 miles and am going to cycle all of the cells 4 rc chargers to bring back the capacity to 6500 Mah. Then load test with a battery load charger. My question is about leveling the pack. Do i just put or wire all the cells in parallel. (plan on using alligator clips) and then use a RC charger to charge the pack and then let it sit. Im very confused on this last step.
@JustVlads7 жыл бұрын
the reason you want the batteries all in parallel is too equalize the voltage in all the blocks so they are the same. Honestly this is not as critical as if it would be a lithium ion battery but still good to do because if you have to much variation in voltage between the blocks the computer will trigger a fault. So if have enough wire clips just do it. It will take a while for the batteries to equalize. i would leave it overnight. you dont need to charge it as it equalizes because this could alter the voltages. hope this helps
@snoobler7 жыл бұрын
There is absolutely no need to parallel the modules. All it does is stabilize the surface charge. The moment they are subjected to a load in the car, they will diverge almost immediately. This is because NiMH voltage with two paralleled modules stabilizes in very short order. I have personally confirmed this with testing. Empty module put in parallel with a module that had 4000mAh input. After 24 hours in parallel, they were 1000 and about 2600 respectively - still substantially out of balance, and their voltages were EXACLTY the same when disconnected from one another. Anything close is good enough as healthy modules "self-balance" to some degree. If charging with RC chargers, charge from empty to about 4000mAh input and the same end voltage - these will be extremely well balanced.

@ebb24217 жыл бұрын
Humidity corrosion on the battery terminals, SENSE WIRES and BATTERY ECU. This messes up the systems ability to determine SOC. If the corrosion is really bad, a fire can result as there is no current limiting on the sense wires. Once you have followed the steps to pull the pack, look inside the battery ECU voltage sense connector (orange 2004-09). Check for corrosion on any of the pins, clean as needed with contact cleaner. If its bad inside the B ECU it will be worse inside the plug. Digikey carries the replacement multi-lock pins from Tyco. At the batteries, clean the corrosion from the plates (soak in vinegar), replace the M5 iron nuts with stainless steel flange nuts. The sense wires, I cut the plate off, put 3" of 1/8" marine heat shrink (heat glue inside) and added 1.5" of wire between the plate and the sense wire. Each sense wire must be checked and cleaned back to copper before soldering. Once the sense wires are repaired and the plates have been soldered back on, pull the shrink tube all the way to the plate and heat seal it. Look up salt/vinegar and baking soda wire cleaning solutions for corroded wires...hope this helps, be safe...

Did you turn on the car and wait for the cells to discharge and see which goes lowest, or were those results after a drive? I don’t have an issue yet but I notice when I’m monitoring the cells live as I’m driving some dip slightly lower than others sometimes, and during other drives sometimes other cells dip lower.

Driving around at slow speeds gives the battery the most stress and thats when the worse measurements are recorded. If using the torque app, it has highest and lowest value record options, which will give you an more accurate assumption than trying to catch it live. If your not triggering a code, your fine for now. Even if you do get the code you can still drive the car if you have too with no issues. Thanks

Hello, do you know what's the highest voltage difference should be in? Mine was all within .05 volt range except two bad ones which were over 1 volt difference which I replaced them and my car running fine. It looks like the voltage difference is more important than actual voltage itself. Is it true? Last question, do hybrid cars lose power as the hybrid batteries get weaker? Thanks
@leeklemetti18876 жыл бұрын
Yes it is no difference than a flashlight battery, just bigger. You lose fuel mileage as the battery wears out.

hey bro, I had the "Check Hybrid System" error, I did a check with the diagnostic tool, the error is P0A80, so I did again a test with milimeter and all cells are over 8v except 2 blocks are 7,8v . what do you suggess ?
@victoriablack55234 жыл бұрын
Did you figure this out? My 2015 Prius just had the check hybrid system error message pop up and i had the same code when i scanned it.

Could you tell me what kind of app you used you can able to see individual cell’s power and the link of the OBD scanner? Thanks
@JustVlads6 жыл бұрын
It's on Android called Torque. But you will need the pro version and prius pids installed. Any wifi scanner works fine.

@JustVlads6 жыл бұрын
you need a paid version of the torque app and then you'll need to install the pids (link) drive.google.com/file/d/1Drv-LA4I_fFEuSAWJPdIUNHdWedUk3Jx/view?usp=drivesdk

I do have the paid version... I cannot find that choice... that is why I wanted to know it's title, thank you.

If you cant get the file installed to the torque app, you'll have to input the pids manually. Keep trying you'll figure it out.

@@JustVlads Thanks for the answer, even one year is good, ''specialists'' from services saying don't even try to do that, you're unbalancing whole battery , is getting back in few months! BUt i'll do it anyway! BTW, my son's name is Vlad too! All the best!

Hi bro what exact diagnose tool you use I can see it sitting underneath your Gear compartment but I'm not sure if it's the Bluetooth one or the wifi one could you let me know that and could you also let me know exactly what app you have to load for the device and thank you
@JustVlads7 жыл бұрын
The obd reader is wifi and its just a generic one you can get anywhere online. The app i used is for android called Torque. In order to see all of the data from the prius hybrid systems you will also need to download and add prius specific "PIDS" to the torgue app. Just search prius pids in google. Hope this helps

Is the charging of the battery necessary? Can't I just change the cell and install the battery back in the car?
@JustVlads6 жыл бұрын
You can, but it might trigger a fault if the new battery modual is not charged well. But over a few cycles of charge and discharge it will normalize into the pack.
@andresvaldevit36926 жыл бұрын
Ok I understand but I didn't get the specifics on how to charge it. Could you summarize what I need, specs, voltage, amps, for how long please. I'm not an expert, I'm trying to research all I need to do the same with my 2010 Prius.
@JustVlads6 жыл бұрын
If you have a 9v power supply that should work. You want about 8.2v on the battery modual. But don't over charge cause it will expand if it's not in the pack. That's all really. As long as your putting in a good battery in, there should be no issues.
@andresvaldevit36926 жыл бұрын
Ok so to summarize I need a transformer with a 9V output and regulate it to 8.2V, how many amps? I should connect each cell in parallel and charge it for 3 hours at 1 amp? The goal is to have each cell at 7.8V right?
@JustVlads6 жыл бұрын
Correct, just get the cells at good charge. It doesn't really matter how you get there. It doesn't have to be equal to the rest. They will all get to where they need to be after you start running the vehicle.

@javierv79947 жыл бұрын
alex tworkowski I think he did it that way because that is how Toyota has the voltage sensors wired up. They don't check every single module but they check them every two modules which are wired in series. That's why he gets about 15 volts.

@JustVlads7 жыл бұрын

@habeebsamawi42777 жыл бұрын
my car is 2014 with no problems should i clean the nuts ?
@JustVlads7 жыл бұрын
+habeeb samawi no need to do that, the corrosion happens around the nut not at the direct contact. You only would do it if you have battery issues.
@snoobler7 жыл бұрын
The only functional part of the interface is the circular portion of the bus bar that is in contact with the terminal ends. Corroded nuts or corrosion on the outer faces is of minimal concern. The best way to get the bulk of the corrosion of everything off is to dump everything into a small cup filled with vinegar for a few minutes - will remove 99% of the corrosion and needs nothing more than rinse and dry afterwards.
