The best privacy trees will offer a fast rate of growth. Look for features like disease and deer resistance, drought tolerance, and low maintenance. The most popular privacy trees are Leyland Cypress and Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae, but there are many more options to choose from that may be better suited to your region or your yard.
For instant privacy, pick out larger trees and stagger your trees by planting 2 rows. For something like Thuja Green Giant or Leyland Cypress plan for about 6 to 8 feet between trees on the diagonal. This will leave you with about 6 to 10 feet of space between each tree within the rows and the rows will be approximately 4 to 6 feet apart.
Privacy trees less than 2 feet start out under $15. Larger sizes cost more but are still much more economical than a privacy fence. If you are patient and don’t mind starting with smaller sizers and can DIY, you can save a ton of money on your privacy hedge!

I planted 6 Thuja Green Giant trees in the backyard about 8 years ago. They're wonderful trees -- I love them! When I planted them they were about 3-1/2 feet tall. Now they appear to be 15-17 feet, and wider. Other than one I lost suddenly and unexpectedly for some unknown reason (turned brown & died), the others have been very healthy and happy. They truly are quite drought-tolerant, though in summer I water them thoroughly about twice a week. They don't shed needles or grow big cones. In the autumn as they're starting to go dormant, some of the inner needles will turn brown, which is normal. I found it's very easy to get rid of the brown parts in the fall -- just hit them with the hose. A good stream of water knocks them off, and they can be part of the mulch under the tree.

I’m so glad you wrote this comment. I was considering the green giants for our property and was very curious on what they look like after 5 or so years. Do these give off any kind of smell? I know the junipers have a pine smell, which I enjoy. Just wondering. I think I’m going to go ahead and get a few and line our property facing our neighbors.

@@mandiegarrett1706 They actually do go dormant, but not in the sense of a deciduous tree. Conifers, Arborvitae included, stop growing, and the entire plant slows down, but it keeps its leaves, as it is still alive and photosynthesizing, just a a slower rate. And, per the other commenter, arborvitae tend to turn a bronzish hue from the cold, but it is completely normal and the return back to their normal color in spring.

Well, this is all well and good but there is a caveat though: trees of the Cupressaceae family are amongst the most allergy provoking trees. In France, where I grew up, the farmland was aggregated in the 50ies or something, when agriculture became industrialised. They had to remove all the edges and realised their mistake later: the soil was eroding fast due to the absence of the edges our ancestors had the wisdom to put in place. They then needed to put some edges back quickly. They chose to plant cypress and thuyas etc. that grow fast. But now I think it is half of allergic people are allergic to cupressaceae tree pollens. I know I am. Severely. And what's not cool is that the pollinating period is very long, around 3 to 5 months depending on the weather. What triggers pollination is cold nights with or without frost and warm sunny afternoons. Then it is hell on earth for me. And finally, desensitisation works very poorly for cypress allergy.
