It's not criticising the EU, he's just saying he stays here until he dies, he's a smalltown boy who can travel across Europe without a passport or much money if he wants to. He seems to be enjoying it here but it doesn't matter where he is, he still feels pain, cuz he is dealing with the loss of his parents and not everyone can be rich. The song is an ode to Europa and his father, who came from a small Frysian village and told him the world should be without borders, and he listened to him.. the last bit of the song is focusing on that bit.

It is not a song that criticizes Europe, nor its policies. His father died of cancer when he was 12, his mother died a year later of a heart attack. He already liked writing music before his father passed away and they talked about traveling around Europe. The song references several European countries. One day he told his father that he would still sing at ESC... and there he is! Europapa... Europa and papa (papa is father in Dutch). I live in the Netherlands and this year... EUROPAPA IS THE WINNER!! THE SONG IS AMAZING!! "At the end of the day, we're all human beings. My father told me, it's a world without borders. I miss you every day, is what I secretly whisper. This song is a tribute to his father / Parents who passed away. Europa in Dutch means Europe. Pa or Papa means dad. His dad once told him the world has no “Grenzen” which could be translated to both borders (Borders are a man made concept) or limitations (Many people create their own limitations in their own mind). This life lesson inspired him to have keep having an open view on the world and live his life to the fullest without putting limitations on himself. After his parents died he carried a lot of pain with him. No matter where on earth he was (Germany, Italy), whatever food he would eat (Escargots in France, Fish and chips in UK, Paella in Spain), he still carries this pain with him. In the end nobody but himself could deal with this pain and he himself must find peace with his losses. Only going through the grief and finding inner peace would put a end to this suffering. This song tells the story of him as an orphan trying to do exactly that. Him creating this song was a huge part of this process. The line with Stromae / papaoute (which Translates to: Dad where are you), is followed with the words about how he wants his parents to be proud of him. He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them one day he would be there performing. Which is what he now did.
@sandraensinck64248 ай бұрын
If you had watched it right until the end you would have seen the clue about his parents, that was the deep meaning of this song: you can go where ever you like and do whatever you want but you’ll never be able to really enjoy nor escape your sadness if you’re not able to work through your issues of the past. In therapy Joost literally needed to write down his feelings and after that burn the paper to work through his grief. The ones who understand the art this song is are so moved and proud of him 💙

Europapa... Europa e papa (papa é pai em holandês). Vivo nos Países Baixos e este ano... EUROPAPA IS THE WINNER!! THE SONG IS AMAZING!!

So. I am dutch, and he sings about wanting to stay in europe till he died, wandering trough europe trying to loosen his pain of losing his dad and mom at 13 and 14. The stromae song is also about losing his dad (papa ou êtes means dad where are you). At the end he is basically burning down his sad past, the songtext transladed like it should should be: In the end we are all human beings, my father once told me we live in a world without grenzen (which translates to borders but also limits). So, you see dad, I listened to you after all.
@rebelwyc9 ай бұрын
IT'S NOT CRITICIZING EUROPE. What are you doing, man?! It's not a political song. The song name is a contraction of Europe + Papa (= father in Dutch). Further references to these 2 subjects: 1. He was an orphan at a young age. His father taught him that this world is his oyster, without borders. So he travels to many countries to escape the pain of the loss of his parents, but that doesn't work. No escargots, fish 'n chips, paella can make him forget. 2. He used to watch ESC with his parents. And he said that one day he would be on that stage performing. His father encouraged him to live life without limits and to go for it. The small boy with the note pad references to his father encouraging him to write poetry (his father was a writer) and now Joost writes songs and he has made it to the ESC ("you see, dad, I listened to you"). With the burning (of the house, picture, building/mill (his past, growing up in Friesland)) at the end of the video, everything comes full circle. He has made his parents proud and he can accept their passing, his past and finally move on.
@gozertjak9 ай бұрын
As happy as this song sounds, it's a sad song. Actually, he describes his life in a few minutes; In the first verse, he talks about losing everything. An important part is the death of his parents when he was 12/13 years old. In the second verse, he talks about how alone and lonely he is. He also says that he needed help because of depression and being homeless and apparently insufficiently helped I don't understand the reference to stromai (bad in french). The leonardi da vinci (The Last Supper) scene may refer to one of his songs in which he sings that he is god. If I remember correctly, his father once told him that he should keep writing poetry. The house with the mill is the place in which he grew up (with all the shit) and possibly burning it down, taking a new step into a new world without borders in which he can do whatever he wants
@duintje149 ай бұрын
Seen all kinds of reactions what the song is about. In Ducht we say Europa. But it's about his dad, we say papa in Dutch to our dads. I saw the interview Joost gave when the song was released. It's a letter to his dad, who taught him human made boundaries, but there are no bounderies. In the lyrics you can hear him searging for his father throughout Europe, but he can't find him, he wants help but no one helps him. He refferes to Stromea's song Papaoutuai whichs means Dad where are you? When Joost was 12 his 'father died of cancer, tragically his mother passed a way a year later of a heartattack. He was an orphan at 13 years old. Very traumatising for anyone! So figurlarly his house burned down when they passed away. He was raised by his siblings and he hopes this song is a goodbye to the pain and grief he still feels for his parents.

"Europapa" premiered on a special show called De Avondshow. Joost was present alongside the host, Arjen Lubach, to talk about his song and his preparations for Eurovision 2024. Joost Klein describes his song: - "Europapa" is about an orphan who travels throughout Europe (and beyond) to find himself and tell his story. At first, people don't recognize him, but he goes on seizing any opportunity he gets to let himself be seen. "Europapa" is a tribute to my father. (sorry, this message translates with google translate) This is what Joost Klein wants to convey with this song: “‘Europapa’ is a tribute to my father. The song is a letter I wrote to my father, who died when I was a teenager." 'Europapa' is about an orphan who travels throughout Europe (and surrounding areas) to find himself and tell his story. My father gave me a broad view of the world. Boundaries are made by people, but my father told me that you can also set boundaries yourself by thinking out of the box. At first people didn't know me, but I continue to take every opportunity to show myself. When people see my act, the first reaction should be, "What's going on here?" and then at the end touch people and make them think. 'Europapa' seems like a very happy act at first, but once beyond that lies a deeper message.

There are a lot of double meanings / connections to his parents and surely i am missing something but ill try to name some: Like the song is called "euro-papa" because papa is dad in dutch. He is singing that he goes to other places but he feels lonely. He lost everything except time. he is struggeling He is giving people money but nobody is helping him. He went to mental healthcare but they could not help him. He is talking about the song Papaoutai from stromae. Papa outai means "dad is here" and the phrase Où t'es? Papa où t'es? means Where are you? Dad where are you? check out the lyrics of that song too :) He is also mentioning "i wont stop until they say, yes he does that very well" because he is seeking pride from his parents. The ending is pretty clear but i think he is talking to his dad and his younger him and he tells his dad that he listend to him. Also the burning picture and burning house stands for him closing that chapter and he wants to move on and dont want to feel the pain anymore. while he was in therapy they used burning stuff to let go the old

You understand it not good. He is for the Europeian Union. His father always learned him, there are no bounderies. Think great, we have all ower histories, but we are all one. That's why he used Europese countries/city's. There is not of all negotives of Europe. You understood it all wrong.

You are totaal wrong. Its a song about that Europa have's no borders and thats a really good thing. We are all human and there are no diverences. And in Holland papa means your father. Europapa you get it now? Haha . We are all equalle. ❤

😊 For people who don’t speak Dutch this song is really hard to understand, but he travels in the song across Europe, because his father told him there are NO borders anymore. ( it’s not a joke, this song is real deep ). And another funny thing about the clip, almost every person in the clip is a famous artist in the Netherlands. Paul Elstak, Stien, Donny, René Froger, and many more.

Yeah, no, this is positive of the EU. He WANTS to stay till he is dead. And "papa" is Dutch for dad. It definitely has something to do with his dad. He also said so himself....

You have got it wrong, it is not political in any way. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was a teenager +/- 13 years old, and his mother died from a heart attack a year later. ""Those who laugh the brightest most always have the heaviest loads they carry around, where ever they travel that backpack of experiences is always there, they can't escape from that, be as free a spirit as you can be, respect your elders, don't waste your time, and an ode to his dad credo""borders are stupid"", and Ubuntu(*)"" This sums up Europapa (papa is Dutch for Daddy) for me, it is true Art and a masterpiece by Joost (Joast) Klein (kline). (*) Ubuntu (Xhosa(a South African tribe language) for "we are all as one"") is the most prolific, important, eye-opening, life-changing word I have learned in my 58 years of being an earthling. Ubuntu to you, fellow earthling :) Btw Klein means small in Dutch. Joost Klein, dream big

I’ve seen a few videos that jump to ‘criticism on EU leadership’. I wonder if that’s projecting. Are those reactors from countries that view the EU differently? Anyway, it is funny hearing them think the opposite of what it means, a father’s value instilled in his son about loving all people and to think without borders.

If you had let the video play until the very end during your reaction, you would have seen Joost Klein dedicating his song to his parents, especially to his father. Read up on Joost Klein’s back story, then you’ll understand. No political angle here, just a young Dutch man missing his father.

Casi todos los idiomas son bonitos. A mi me gusta que en eurovisión canten en su propio idioma. La canción engancha y tiene una letra muy triste. Es un contraste con el buen rollo de la música.
