Priya Krishna and her mother, Ritu, take you inside their family kitchen in Dallas to share stories about learning to cook, growing up in an immigrant family, and creating the family recipes in their cookbook, "Indian-ish." Priya, a food reporter for The New York Times, and her mother show you how to make dal in an instant pot and the "doctored up" baked beans that were a staple in their family home. This video is part of NPR's Where We Come From series, featuring stories from immigrant communities of color across generations, in honor of Immigrant Heritage Month.

I’m an American man born and raised in Iowa, USA to American parents from Iowa. I am now vegetarian at 35 (mostly vegan actually) and I cook nothing but Indian food. When I cook for my Indian colleagues at work they always swear I’m an Indian “auntie.” Lol! Namaste!

Yay, Priya! Great to see you and your Mom here on NPR. It's thanks to your work over at BA that I had the nerve to give Indian food cooking a try. Now I buy lentils in the big, five pound bag. :) Thanks for sharing you and your Mom's story.

Your book is so accessible. I have always loved to eat Indian food, but when I found authentic recipes online it was so far outside of what I felt I could do (not to mention the very long list of spices). I bought your cookbook because I was familiar with your name and i have made MOST of the recipes and they are so delicious! Thank you!

“My dal is great but it’ll never taste as good as my mom’s…and I’ll never know why…”. Such a universal sentiment..I feel this every time I make one of my Dad or Mom’s dishes.

I love this family's story. I love how her mother's ingredients became limited due to where she lived, thus her seeking new foods, new ideas, etc., and creating new takes on traditional recipes. Doesn't get more American than that!

This video only shows that Priya's mom is the real hero who made it easier for her kids to grow up in a new culture and environment without bringing in a lot of friction that migrant families usually are guilty of. And Priya should be grateful for that, and not simply regret missing out on her culture as she was growing up. There is plenty of time to learn about her culture as she is doing now, and in this age of a global culture, kids should be let free to adopt the aspects of their own culture or even other culture whenever they choose to without the parents forcing it down on them or putting up restrictions and make them stand out especially in a growing age where self-image is very important to grow confidence. So, yeah, I'd be horrified if Priya got angry at her kid for not eating what she cooked and said "Do you know how good you have it!?". Passing on that guilt of having not lived up to your parents onto your child is ultra bad parenting. I hope she was nothing but joking about that, but having watched her other videos, I'm afraid she was not.

When I lived in the USA in the Nineties, first gen immigrants meant the ones who actually moved to the States. Second gen was their American born children. Now this generation calls itself first generation. I missed the change and. why it happened.

I'm thankful that Sohla took a stand for herself and her colleagues, which led to them taking greater control of their careers. While that was all precipitated by Mr. Rappaport, we really shouldn't be thanking anyone for saying a slur.
