Sits dry in a garage for the cold winter season now :) is there another event planned for next year?

Used to have the same starter issue on my old z32 it's simple enough to fix you just need a new starter motor it's caused by the solenoids age when you have it out you can give it 12v and watch the starter only pop the gear out half way causing it to grind on the flywheel dosnt damage anything but is annoying and a sign the starter is on its way out even if cleaning it fixes the issue temporarily. New ones are worth it and sounds awesome compared to other Nissan starter motors

Mine used to bog down too, you can check your Throttle position sensor and adjust it while the car is off with a multimeter. while you’re at it you can also check your idle control valve, found by the fire wall under the plenum. Thanks for all the great videos Prizza

Those fins on the differential are usually for the upgraded VLSD diffs which have the fins for more cooling. Same as S13's👌

I had the starter flywheel grind issue on my vh45 swap with the tt 300zx trans. the issue is the depth of the starter gears when engaged. my fix was starter shims. xcessive manufacturing sells them and you can stack them (they sell a few sizes) to get enough engagement. solved my issue 100%

bad shift feel annoys me the MOST, it's the things you touch every time you get in the car like the shifter, steering wheel, and the seats, that make the biggest overall improvements because it's what you interface with (and why all three of those things are changed on my car)

I had to use a 2ft pipe wrench to get my g35 shift knob off, ripped the leather right off. Sucker was ON THERE!

Mike, I’ve worked on Z32”s for approximately 30 years. The idle issue may be the TPS or the idle air control valve. Check your TPS first and replace if needed. If it’s the IACV then disconnect take it apart and clean with throttle body cleaner.. Also check for cracked hoses attached to unit.

fun way to locate vacuum leaks is to spray flammable brake cleaner around the engine, it should work with modern injection engines too. The vacuum will suck in the cleaner and make the engine rev up a bit, so you now know the general location of the problem. Unless its like a car from a friend of mine and the problem isnt a vacuum leak but a misfire due to a broken spark plug lead. Then uh... Spraying turns quite serious, quite fast.

Nice work again man. For your idle issue I say start off with the easy stuff first. Try cleaning your maf and iacv, replacing 02 sensors. If it still persists then go to the throttle position sensor

Good info! I will say, I did clean the iacv while refreshing the intake manifold. I agree with mad sensor next as they are most prone to failure and debris I noticed the O2 sensors look fairly new. I have not verified if tps is set properly, might be working checking as well

The starter issue is probably the starter itself, it likely has some build up on the coils causing some resistance and not allowing it to kick up all the way, or the coils themselves are just getting weak, starter probably needs replaced

I remember when that generation of 300z came out new. A buddy and I went to the Nissan dealership in town to see if we could take one for a test drive, but I was 17 and he was 18. They said no. We tried though. After seeing several up close back then, I wanted one so bad. Now I'm old and disabled and can't even afford a busted 300. Life is a kick in the pants sometimes! 🤪

Shift bushings were probably all that was needed to get the play out and those can be accessed from under the car. They come in rubber or brass.

Going to share a bs car starter moment to help you think and find the problem. I installed a ford 302 into a 85 toyota celica, had the stater literally explode twice and couldn't figure out why. On the 3rd attempt it kept making a grinding skipping noise like that and it was the gear eating the starter ring from the back side of the flex plate... ya the back side towards the engine was all sorts of messed up and no one knew the fix. One obscure post about manual and automatic starters made me have a closer look. Automatics sit deeper into the bell housing and manuals are stubby compared. But it was still making the noise when I corrected my mistake, the damage was done though and the gear was getting stuck on the flywheel till I deburred it one tooth at a time 😅 Take the starter apart, clean/grease the bendex gear and check for any play in the starter. With a buddy on the crank, turn it over and check the teeth on the wheel because you know the issue... Just in denial because you can't get a stock flywheel 😆 or is it the rust 😂 Brake clean that air filter and reoil it with wd40 👌don't let it dime ya till the rust is repaired.

Recently did the same maintenance on a subaru parking brake, added a second nut on the cable at the shifter because I think it was backing itself out. Might not be a bad idea to add another nut while you're in there.

Don’t know if it would have any bearing on that car, but we had a Chevrolet Van with a 5.7l and a Dodge Shadow with the 2.2L Turbo that both had flex plates with missing teeth that would make a similar noise if the bare section was just close enough to get a a rattle like that, if not just spin freely. We would turn the engine over with a ratchet and socket on the crank snout/pulley until there were teeth to engage. Dad eventually replaced the flex plate in the van but we never did with my Shadow and I got sick of grabbing the ratchet when that happened, so I just grabbed the alternator belt and gave it a yank, which turned engine over enough to have the same effect.

Looks like Mike is going to put a new clutch in. Odds are that the ring gear is worn out In a spot, causing that's why you have to push the car in gear to move the fly wheel so the starter will engage

maybe check and see if nissan had an updated part number for the starter. Sometimes if the teeth aren't engaging right or fully out,, it'll eat the corners of the flywheel teeth and cause that issue. Was a common issue with mitsubishi guys swapping auto to manual and they didn't use a manual starter that had a shorter engagement.
