1. Curly hair can definitely be brushed when wet and for a lot of curl types it’s a must 2. For a lot of curl types, using a lot of water is key for definition. Water is the best source of hydration 3. Gel would not weigh her hair down or make it flat, actually for someone with her looser hair texture CREAM would weigh it down.

Not all curlies are the same. I only detangle on damp hair and it works for me. If I want curl definition, I will spray it section by section and apply products. That comes out more organized for me. It breaks off and hurts like hell. So she has to brush it with tons of conditioner and then brush it again toweled dry with curl cream and heavy duty leave in conditioner. The only detangling we do when its dry is very gently and patiently with our fingers.

Depending on your curl type, a lot of people have better results putting products on while hair is super soaking wet. It helps the curls clump together and keeps frizz down. Braaaddd....you need to watch more curly girls. Putting the product in when your hair is soaking wet, then squishing or pulsing it in for a couple of minutes is actually the most effective way to both get product in and maintain moisture for a lot of curlies. I've done it myself and it really does make a difference. Also, these curly girls have spent a lot of time figuring out what works best for them. It's a very different routine than for straight hair. Btw, the reason for not using silicone is because it requires a sulfate to remove, and many curlies only use a sulfate every few weeks. 😘

This! If I let my hair get too dry while styling, I can never get the right amount of water back in without completely soaking it again. So either I sacrifice my nice little curl families or start from scratch when it comes to how wet my hair. Wet styling is important. You're not diluting it either. If anything, your making sure more product is dispersed. The water helps dissolve it making it easier to absorb. As you scrunch and brush your product through, you are ensuring that the product/water combo is evenly applied and easier to enter the hair. Also, there doesn't seem to be any imperical evidence to explain the CGM obsession with sulfates and silicones. Manes by Mell has several videos that go into why both are perfectly fine for most people to use. She does say that some people react negatively to a product. Seeing as how there are almost always reports of someone having a poor reaction to a product, there will always be outliers. These are people who's chemical make-up is so unique that they can't handle certain products that 99% of the population benefit from. Unfortunately, it was a stylist who wrote the Curly Girl Method book. Only a scientist, one who's research on the subject could be vetted by dozens of his/her peers would need to back up those claims. There was a study done not so long ago that indicates air drying causes more damage than drying with heat. You're leaving the hair shaft expanded and full of water for too long. Even cold temp hair dryers are probably to long. Soaking wet hair with gel takes years to dry. This is what causes damage. Blow drying with heat is better for your hair. Many CGM "no-no's" are flawed or straight up inaccurate.

I’m constantly amazed how little professional hairdressers know about curly hair. It’s 2021. But I guess if you don’t live with it yourself you don’t know (like how much hair we lose on wash day because we don’t brush it when dry). My hairdresser was also shocked I use gel but modern gels for curly hair, used correctly, aren’t like those shiny hard ones that men use.

The thing I appreciate about Brad is that he loves hair and is always eager to learn so I hope he reads the comments and takes it as a learning opportunity. He probably needs to watch more natural hair content and unlearn some of the things he has learned about curly hair. I would love it if later on he made a part 2 for this video to revisit what he has gotten wrong which is A LOT! Example: Curly styling aka the wash and go is best done in the shower on sopping wet hair.

Yes, it seems like he's at a loss here. It's very different, to be a curly hair/natural hair specialist than what he's been doing for a living. I understand and accept the fact that it's okay for him to not get everything right. The truth is, I have curly hair and the amount of knowledge I have about it is pretty small compared to that of a curly hair specialist. He has to take classes, I think, or train under someone who's a curly hair specialist to be able to weigh in on everything correctly.

People with straight hair have no business going after curly hair routines. Curly hair has to be brushed/styled wet or it will frizz and cause a lot of damage. Fact. It takes a long time for most curly people to find systems that work for us, and they seem weird and taboo to people with straight hair. Don't try to take things that work away from us! I think it especially rubs me the wrong way when he was like "im taking a point bc i feel like it" practically saying that whether her method is wrong or right he just felt like taking a point off, then uses the excuse of being nitpicky for why he is taking points off when the point of the video (if you are giving ratings and pointing there routines) is to do it based of the knowledge you have that would be best for the hair not your personal preference. And yes he definitely he shouldn't be commenting on curly hair methods if he isn't educated on the subject, especially if he is "rating" and giving "advice" onto what to do with there hair.

Lol I love your videos but this is why I don't go to a stylist unless they are a curly specialist, because the things you're knocking points off for are absolutely accurate methods for styling curly hair and unless you have curly hair or work very often with people who do, or go out and get educated specifically on styling curly hair, there's no way for you to know that. Hair schools rarely educate students on how to properly style curly hair. I can't tell you the number of salons and stylists I've been to that have no idea WTF they're doing when styling curls so they finish cutting it and while it's damp, throw some kind of gel on it and try to put it in place and send me on my way. A MESS. I usually have to go home and re-style my hair after paying gobs of money to get it done. It's beyond frustrating. I recommend checking out Manes by Mell (a stylist, curly specialist, and youtuber).

So yes maybe don't rip through wet hair with just any old brush, use a wide tooth comb or wet brush.

The hair comment is right, hair is most fragile when it’s wet, however not brushing it when it’s wet only really applies to people with thinner, straighter hair. Detangling dry curly hair, especially more coily hair types is so difficult it might as well be a olympic sport. + Way more breakage happens dry, i remember going to a hairdresser to get my hair cut a couple of years back and cringed when she started brushing my hair dry, it somehow ended up more damaged coming out than in, i cut my own hair now. 😂 Basic curly hair knowledge is to do the opposite of what you are used to -please do NOT brush it when it’s dry.

Nope nope nope...gotta detangle your curly coily hair while wet (or very very damp) and apply products on either soaking wet hair or very damp hair depending on curl type. And gel creams are good for sealing in the moisture. The "swish to condish" is a curly hair technique from Melissa Stites, a curly stylist in Michigan, and it for deeply hydrating the hair. With curly hair, you need to keep the water in...water is hydration. And the plus side is you can use less product while still getting the definition and softness you want. Although, I do agree with using a foam product if you really want lightness and volume. I love a good mousse for that. But mousse doesn't keep a style as long as gel does.

Ok when Brad talking about silicones, Im quickly realising his lack of knowledge of curly hair. The reason silicones are disliked in the curly hair community is cause the only way to truly wash it out is by using sulfates. Sulfates being very damaging to curly hair as the natural oils take longer to travel down the hair so it drys it out more. After the wet detangling comment too I am becoming more sceptical of this critic

For context, I have wavy, type 2 hair. I used to dry brush my hair for YEARS, and I was on the train of "my hair is straight but sooooo frizzy :(" My hair literally poofed up so much I looked like I was electrocuted 99.9999% of the time. Without doing too much research, I noticed that my hair looked so much better when I didn't dry brush it (usually when I washed it at night and didn't brush it the following morning) so I stopped dry brushing. When I realised that my hair actually had a wave pattern, and was not just "straight frizzy hair", and stopped dry brushing my hair completely, my life became so much easier. So I can only imagine that girls with curlier hair would have an even worse experience than me when it comes to dry brushing. I have to disagree strongly with this one, Brad. Please consult someone w natural hair/someone who specialises in these areas before making such a video. Or even make it a collab, I'm sure people would be really happy to see you collab w natural hair girls :)

Brushing while wet is a must, applying products to sopping wet hair is pretty important, and a gel is one of the only things that gives me good hold. The other thing is that I follow India and watched that video. She was trying a curly technique. It wasn’t her actual routine. And gel doesn't weigh hair down except maybe if you put it on dry. The thing is that the water helps dilute the product which allows it to evenly distribute through the hair. Therefore, there's less buildup on the outside of the hair and some of the gel that was absorbed into the water evaporates too. Obviously, not much, but once you add a new chemical to your product, in this case water is the new chemical, you are physically changing the properties of the product. It's no longer the same as if you applied it dry. That's why textured hair often gets more crispy when your hair isn't soaking while you apply your gel. At least, that's been my experience.

Brad I love you and you’re awesome and so knowledgeable about everything butttttt… i really think you need to find out a little more about curly hair. Everything India did was spot on. The bowl method basically just mixes the conditioner / products in with the excess water in your hair and you keep putting it back in so it absorbs more and more moisture. Also, Curly girls literally cannot detangle their hair when it’s dry. It causes sooo much more breakage and our hair poofs out 10x’s it’s normal size! As long as your hair is conditioned enough and wet enough and you do it GENTLY, using a wet brush or tangle teaser to detangle is really the safest way for us to get our tangles out.

I've only made it partway through the first video he's critiquing, and it's insanely obvious that Brad has no experience with curly hair. Curly hair can break when dry-brushed, and water helps the hair absorb moisture and product. Edit: As this video goes along, it's painfully obvious that Brad is ignorant to curly hair care and has done almost no research on curly care before this video. The bowl method works for a lot of curlies, so the fact that it doesn't compute for him doesn't mean that it's not going to work.

It confuses me that the bowl method would work. I agree Brad made a ton of errors in this video, but the bowl method was really weird to me. Like he mentioned, it's only being reapplied to the lower half of the hair, and honestly, you're just applying more water diluted product into the hair with each pass. Her end result was lovely, but I dunno about that part of it.
@MrTableforfive
@MrTableforfive 2 жыл бұрын
@@pandemonicpixie I 100% agree. (And don't get me started on the errors in this video) I put product in my hair while it's soaking wet, and then I plop with cotton a t shirt (not a shower cap, TF was that) or scrunch dry a bit with a t shirt cos I'm impatient. Sure, I waste some product, but my hair looks better. Yet I can't understand this bowl thing. *It seems like all this extra work for, what? You could just dilute the product in the first place if you're going to keep dunking?
@pandemonicpixie
@pandemonicpixie 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrTableforfive I could see a shower cap working instead of a microfiber towel plop. I'm not sure it matters too much how the hair is placed, mostly that it has time to absorb product, not get messed up by air or the wrong fabric, and then let down to dry at some point. My biggest issue with plop is that it messes up the direction of the lower half of my hair, and I haven't entirely solved that. Parting is a pain while wet, but seems to have gotten me closer to better results, but then how to dry, parted and appropriately protected. I dunno. Lol.

Also I just wanted to add. It’s not true that the products won’t work as well if you apply it on curly hair. I have 3B hair, if I apply on towel dries hair, I get frizz. If I apply on soaking wet hair, I get perfectly defined curls, every single time. It takes longer to dry, but it’s worth it, cause my hair lasts a full week, and I don’t get any frizz until around day 5/6.

As a mom of a curly girl, you HAVE to brush it when wet and full of conditioner or you'll NEVER get the knots out. The hair has to be super slippery in order to detangle. If you try it when the hair is dry, you'll end up ripping out the hair.

Brad, get two curly headed participants with long hair and brush one head while dry and one while wet. See how they react and how much hair comes out in both. 🥴 then tell curly headed people what you prefer for the health of our hair. I’d NEVER brush my hair while dry. Nope.

@@EmpressOfIron I have type 3 hair and if I brush it wet it screams as it breaks then I look like a burnt broom. @QQ-cz2in

@@EmpressOfIron I specifically refer to brushing to detangle, not finger combing. I have type 3 hair and I can only brush it (with a tangle teezer and denman brush) when it's soaking wet after showering and I have conditioned it + put in leave in conditioner. I think very few people with type 3/4 hair prefer dry brushing over wet brushing to detangle. Finger combing I personally can do on dry hair without causing too much frizz.

Brad…. I love you… and I 💯 agree with you on all your other videos, buuuut… when it comes to curly hair, you kinda got it all backwards my gorgeous friend. Please watch a lot more curly girl videos and see that what they were doing is actually everything they need to be doing for curly hair. More water in the hair means more moisture since curly hair lacks moisture. The last thing we need is to dry our hair first before detangling and then adding product. It just doesn’t work that way. I’m sorry babe, but you got this one wrong. You’re still amazing and I will forever love you, but curly hair is a whole other level.

Hey Brad Mondo! Not to be a know it all cuz ur a literal hairdresser with way more experience than me but you can't brush ur hair when it's dry!!!! This can cause a lot more breakage than brushing it in the shower with can also ruin ur curl pattern. I would recommend brushing it only when applying conditioner cuz it can help get the whole hair moisturize and brush it when ur out of the shower. It helps a lot for me and my curls never looked better.

Brad removing points from a curly/wavy for wet brushing like he knows what's up. As a lifelong intense wavy (1" of straighter hair before waves start, ends are ringlets) this is seriously horrible advice to dry brush. Dry brushing curly/wavy hair results in frizz, breakage, and severe damage. Also thinking curly/wavies should be towel-drying before applying product. OMG Brad!
