To be fair, Evelynn is actually nuts, its just her archetype (origin) that sucks and holds her back. Rarran only saw Evelynn so his analysis is fair.

@@wes407 I somewhat disagree. I believe her main issue is actually her lack of Origin power. Bard gets Chims and Jhin gets popshots from hand and Evelynn gets nothing. I believe she needs a passive added, maybe let Evelynn get benefits from Husks Everywhere or have her upgrade husk stats based on how many Evelynns are in deck. A huge part of Runeterra champions is they restrict deck building to have them, so what would be a passable or even good champ normally becomes much weaker, because they have a forced game plan. Bard's can easily be argued as too much, but Jhin's Origin feels fair enough. Evelynn should have been closer to Jhin's imo

Actually in my region (which is EU), the actual top 1 ladder is playing a Gwen deck since she was released with Annie and her package with no hallowed units at all (outside of Gwen herself), just using Thybaulk to buff Gwen and obviously others stuffs too Gwen isn't the only way to kill the opponent but still makes her a good tool since shadow isle could be better than a bilgewater side with TF. To explain more in details how Gwen works with Thybaulk : she does drain 3/4/5 on level 1 and on level 2 at least drain 4 since the effects becomes "drain 2/3/4 (depending on the number of Thybaulk played but very often only one) per 2 attack stat" and she gains a tick of damage when 2 Thybaulk have been in play, he seems to be the only one playing this deck at this level of ranking tho since there is a lot of Kai'Sa demacia around

I'll go ahead and note that given the meta was 3 days old when this was recorded, shiny new toy syndrome was in full effect and the champions that were released are not easy to deckbuild with. Kai'Sa is still quite dominant because the ability to copy scout is just really strong for her, giving her entirely too many attacks (void abomination is also just "add your own custom 8 drop to the game"). Gwen is mostly still seeing play in various flavors of burn, but she definitely has some combo potential as well thanks to the synergy with hallowed and rally. Combo decks tend to take a bit longer to materialize. Eve sadly is still not doing well. Eve herself is quite strong, but the cost of having to give up your second region combined with still needing her gimmick in order to do much of anything is just really hard to overcome. Her followers just aren't all that great.

@@mewmeister8650 Seeing various comments by Riot devs (things like "Husks used to count for Slay but that was broken") I think that's exactly what happened; having seen this sort of thing from the other side sometimes you get something that seems (or is) broken in development, struggle to balance it, then end up nerfing it one too many times until it ends up underpowered on release.

I played around with 2 of the new champions and its really hard to guess how good they are going to be without thoroughly knowing every card in the game and what options are available to it. Evelynn is actually quite strong, but is a bad match up vs the 2 new champions which are heavily played (particularly good with kai'sa on curve). Kai'sa is for sure broken and comes with the only actually incredible 8 drop i have ever seen.

The problem with Eve is husks are random. She is better though than Sunny was giving her credit for, and Gwen is actually quite strong, just pair her with Ionia or Demacia if you want to play her as a midrange.

One reason why Kaisa is crazy is she can constantly get spellshield, so unless your opponent has multiple removals they can play in the same turn she can be really difficult to deal with.

Honestly, coming and watching this so long after the expansion, the Gwen and Evelynn sections were just done too early. Gwen/Kat and Viego/Eve are both tier 1 decks at the time of writing this comment (with Gwen/Sej being tier 2 probably). There has been an expansion, but Gwen/Kat was discovered three days before the release of that. Goes to show how important experimentation is to figuring out how powerful cards are. (But uh, focus speed second skin was a mistake for sure. Glad they fixed it.)

Imma be honest: you said that you want to keep gwen alive but I have a deck with lalista where I kill gwen as much times as possible then reviving her. You get a ton of hallowed stacks and the eternal dancers can revive gwen and the eternal dancers can be revived by kalista. So with one unit you van get three units. Then, if you have killed gwen 3-5 times you revive the 6 strongest allies so you get 5 gwens, all getting the hallowed stacks and the drain.

I have been wondering if Gwen lee sin could work. The hardest part would be leveling the lee, but if you are able to do it you will murder the enemy nexus with the hallowed buffs on lee

Not really. Gwenn wants units and Lee sin wants spells. There is simply not enough room in the deck to get both. Also Lee sin wants overwhelm and you cant get that in Shadow Isles.

Same with colors in Magic, Types in Yugioh, so on. A strong card is never necessarily a playable card in any game, context always matters. It's funny watching this for this first time a couple weeks later, I think everything Sunny said is still true, but even more extreme. With more decklist refinement, Kai'Sa is a nearly tier-0 boogeyman, Gwen doesn't fit anywhere, and Eve's got one of the lowest winrates and playrates in the game.

I think a way to really 'Buff' Evelyn is to simply count killing husks as 'slaying', I was so excited to Play Evelyn Kindred; then got so confused because everytime a Husk dies ... nothing happens. My unit just killed a husk, but apparently didn't "slay" them? I dunno if I'm misunderstanding something or if it's a bug, but if that's fixed; I can see Evelyn getting play with Slay related decks (Kindred, Nasus etc)

Its not a bug, when a card's effect kills itself its counted as that card doing the kill and not the player (slay). This is also why ephemeral units dying at the end of turn never triggered slays either

Spoilers: Kai'Sa is broken and ruining the game alongside Bard and Tybaulk. Evelynn is terrible with no redeeming qualities aside domination who is better on Azir/Irelia decks as a third Azir. Gwen is alright but nothing special due to Kai'Sa hard countering her. A lot of decks are underperforming due to being hard countered by Kai'Sa demacia. PS: Gwen is in reality from Camavor, just like Viego, the ruined king. Camavor is bonded to Shadow isles due to Viego basically making the blessed isles into the shadow ones.

The main problem with Evelynn is that aside from Domination, all of her followers are mediocre if Evelynn is not on play. The deck feels terrible to play if you can't draw Evelynn by turn 4/5, arguably worse than not drawing Yasuo.
