Thank you so much for this! I'm starting my 200hr teacher training in a week and came across this video after a good search trying to prepare myself for what to expect. You make awesome points and overall, I'm so excited to be able to spread some positivity into the world through teaching yoga!

Thanks for sharing, Celest. I'm leaving for Rishikesh this Sunday and have been doing tons of research on teaching. I'll be in the city for about 8 days researching different ashrams and making contacts to prepare for my 200 hour training there later in the year. I've been practicing for about 4 years now and am really grateful for all the people like you who make it possible for me to learn more about teaching full time. :-)

100% agree! I have to make time for my own practice or go to a class. Going to a class as a student is a luxury sometimes! I'm in the teaching and working hard stage right now but a year and a half on since beginning to teach and I can see it's starting to pay off. Slow. Steady. Consistent. I do love it though and wouldn't change it for the world. It can be hard but I love connecting to people and building a little community in Bristol. love love!

Great video, thanks for doing the pros and cons. I'm a professional musician thinking about doing my YTT training. One of the things that used to bother me a lot as a yoga student would be if the teacher started the class in a bad mood, was upset about something, had an ax to grind, etc. As a musician, we are only as good as our last gig, and no one cares if you've had a bad day. Your job is to be professional and do your best in the performance. I always expected that of my yoga teachers, and my favorites are those who can transcend the mood of the students or of the day. It doesn't mean you have to be cheerfully fake, but bottom line is you have a job to do and we've paid for the lesson. The best teachers are the ones that can "read" a room emotionally even before the class has begun. Even in a highly structured series like Ashtanga, Iyengar, or Baptiste they gently move the class into a calm centered mindset thru the tone and delivery of the cueing. And I love your suggestion about subtly changing your cues to get everyone including yourself into the right space.

You literally covered everything! Thank you for this video! When I become an instructor I lost my personal practice for quite some time and I found during that period I lost a personal touch to my practice and to my classes and I had to take time for myself to find that spark while teaching again. Always stay the student. Every once in a while I find it's so hard to inspire when you're not feeling well yourself but whenever I teach A class my students always seem lift my spirit back up and it's such an overall loving job. Especially after bonding with your students 💕 thanks for this video I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way

I am currently just a simple volunteer (a one day in the future teacher hopeful), but my yoga teacher works constantly, multiple classes every day. I don't know how she manages, actually but we just recently had a conversation about how little she gets to practice herself. Believe it or not-she still has a very active social life too. She is like a real life version of wonder woman to me! A true inspo!

Amen to your first point about not "sharing" your bad day. One doesn't need to drop your burden on everyone he or she meets. Further, since behavior and emotions are on a resonance, if you behave in a more positive way, your emotional state will follow, at least to some extent.

Thanks for sharing this! I wholeheartedly agree with these pros and cons. It's challenging to teach yoga when you're going through personal struggles but we keep doing it anyway and giving it everything we've got. I've been teaching for 5 years but I just recently started exploring the world of KZbin and social media. It's true that we can't just rely on public classes if we are to make teaching yoga a sustainable career. We need to get out of our comfort zone and learn more about the "business/marketing" side of it and how to use evolving technology to reach and inspire more people. Congrats on your upcoming book! :)

I completely agree with you on all the pros and cons you've mentioned here Celeste. I'm a yoga teacher in San Francisco and I get comments all the time about how great and easy my life must be. But little do they know, we do go through struggles just like every other person in this world. The main thing I truly value in our community is that we are all so supportive of one another and our passion will not only lead ourselves but others too in achieving great things :) Even with the struggles, I'm absolutely grateful to be able to do what I do. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! xo Let's connect @maggiejshih

Celest it's like you're reading my mind! I'm an ashtanga teacher (so many many early starts!) teaching in London too, and everything you've just said is totally true! I'm bursting with love for my job, but it like anything there is defiantly a balance there, it is a really hard lifestyle sometimes. At the beginning it was just hard to be the one turning down on late night party's with friends because my 5am alarm clock was calling, but now I actually like getting up at 5 in a wired way. Then the challenge, as you said, was the uncertainty of money- especially with crazy London rent prices!- but then I found that practicing what I preach was all I needed: stepping back, not freaking out and trusting that everything will be ok. Being a yoga teacher is the best job ever, but it's not for everyone.. A massive congrats on your book, that so exciting! And I think it sounds like it'll be a massive help for anyone thinking about taking this path, new teachers or even experienced ones 😊 Xx

Very honest and refreshing heartfelt picture of being a yoga teacher. Also being very realistic in balancing personal life mentally and physically. An option is instead of doing Yoga....be Yoga...I use my variable height body to stay engaged rather than relaxed...engaged creates growth, relax creates atrophy. Always seeking expansion and engaged muscles creates a yogic lifestyle that is balanced, centered, blissful. My routines are inspired naturally and through natural patterns like flower of life.

Hey there. I am thinking about doing my Yoga license and have to say this video helped me understanding your world better. Guess I would struggle a bit with the social media bit... Right now I do yoga every day and enjoy my own practice so so much. It helps me a lot to get my daily life balanced and I’m a big fan of the physical aspect to it. However I believe even not becoming a yoga teacher and having done a license would be of so much personal value. Thanks for sharing this video. Namaste.

100% - number 1 is for fellow teachers to retain their own practice! For me my practice became almost purely meditation and pranayama and my Asana is more about working on particular poses or restorative - 20 min max and not even every day

Thanks for sharing your perspective. The thought of taking a teacher training course crept into my mind and so I've been investigating what that would entail. I'm losing a lot of passion for my old hobbies from the burn out from my current job as a video game artist, and I find solace in yoga. I've been doing yoga for 5 years and love digging deeper, so it was great to hear a perspective of what the life of a yoga teacher might be like. I never really considered that with a busy teaching schedule you would lose out on personal yoga time! :O Thanks again ~

Thank you so much for an awesome video! How generous of you to share all this experience with everyone! I'm considering doing my first training next year (working on building my strength this year) and have a question. Why do yoga teachers have to create their own sequences? Why can't they teach what they learned how they learned it? Or focus on teaching individual yoga poses? And why the need for social media exposure? When there was no social media yoga teachers still had students.

I'm throwing in looking after a toddler into the mix but getting my practice back on form. its so true that when we start teaching we stop practising. I had a full time job, teaching on my free time, no time to practise. It affected a lot my teaching, because not practise meant not connecting with my body and feeling what i was teaching. The best is to find the balance and always get 2 to 3 practises a week, and make it a routine.

Hi Celest, thanks for sharing this view. I could live with all the cons but there is one thing that really bothers me about becoming a yoga teacher. It is the fact that I have to be consistently active on social media. I mean... of course I have an IG account and if I want to attract students I need a facebook page where I post events and let people know where I'm teaching but ... do I really have to upload a picture of myself in a yoga pose every day whilst sharing my deepest personal thoughts and film every single moment and meal on my IG story? I personally get really annoyed by this lately and even gave myself a social media break last week becauseI got so annoyed of all this and instead of inspiring me it is blocking me. It would be good to know if there are also some yoga teachers out there who are successful without being attached to their phone 24/7 .
