Thanks for posting this. I hope at the very least if we skip a version we will be allowed to come back in for the standard upgrade price for HD. My first HD purchase was a stand alone without hardware for PTHD7 which was $200. PTHD8 was also available as a stand alone for $250. Just for a little HD history. Thanks again!

Yes as well as PT 11.3.1 has serious bugs with 10.10.2 but is Avid going to fix them or just force one to buy PT 12 for a working version? Actually pro tools 12 has the same graphics bug that is affecting some not all users. Will they put another version of 11 out at this point I doubt it.

I absolutely love Pro Tools as a DAW. I hate AVID as a company. They have the most elitist, stuck up, mentality of any company I've ever dealt with, because they know that can be elitist. Anything I buy that is Pro tools related, i buy through Sweetwater, cause they know how to relate to customers. This whole thing is about to make me Jump over to a whole different system.

Great video and very well explained. Really there's not much difference from 11 to 12 until the collaboration and "post as frozen" features which are "Coming soon" are made public (Avid hasn't said exactly when). One other confusion is the difference between bug fixes and upgrades and can (and will) Avid separate the two going forward. For example, if your subscription lapses and there were bugs when you subscribed, will these be a free upgrade. Think about it, how is that even possible?

I read on the website you need a PCIe slot for HDX or HD Native card (incl. one power connection on motherboard) or ASIO-supported audio device. Im not sure if I have that. Can I just use a USB interface to record? I have all the other Requirements.

Hey lance I'm in a spot of bother I recently upgraded my Mac to OS X 10.8.5 I owned pro tools 9 it used to work perfectly and now it is not supported with the current OS X version I believe I need pro tools 11 but is it possible to deactivate my ilok license that runs pro tools 9 over to pro tools 11?

Pro tools 10 will run on 10.8.5 and PT11 and PT 12 so you will have upgrade your PT9 to one of those. You can find older upgrades like PT 10 and 11 on eBay perhaps. Other wise you will have to upgrade to PT12 from 9 for $300 which gets you one year of support. Then 100 a year after that to stay up to date, we are talking standard pro tools not HD. If you're doing the subscription or renting, what happens if you miss a payment for a couple months or something happens to your computer and can't use the program at the the time. Do Pro Tools stop working until you pay or will it still work.

+Anthony Dawkins Yes when your subscription runs out, you can't use the program till you renew your plan. You can rent PT 12 monthly or rent PT 12 annually or buy a perpetual license which costs a lot more but you can keep using Pro Tools even when your annual support plan runs out meaning you own it not renting it, if you want future updates you will have to have get another support plan.

Question .. I made a terrible mistake by accepting the El Capitain upgrade for mac without considering my equipment .. I attempted to uninstall and lost everything in the process [No Hard Drive but soon to purchase] and when I downloaded my protools bundle [Purchased in Aug, 2014] Protools 10&11 my Mac did NOT recognize the downloads and I have been without Protools for about a month .. I have never upgraded Protools to Yosemite however was still able to activate the application "Before" I accepted the El Capitain upgrade. My question is this .. If I purchase the upgrade for Protools 12 will it work with El Capitain ? I cannot uninstall and get Yosemite because its "Discontinued" .. -jon

+Harley Quinn No you do not get a deduction on the price, you have to then buy a perpetual license with a new support plan. It really depends on what version of pro tools you owned before buying into the new subscription plans if that's what you did, what ever old Pro Tools licesne you have like 9 and 10 determines how much you will pay for a perpetual license. I don't know for sure but I really doubt they will give you a break on the price.

Hi Lance, Maybe you can help me with this; my old Mac has past away, so I bought a new one that came with OS X 10.10.3 This version only supports PT 11 or higher. Seeing that I used to use PT 10 I'll need to upgrade. Now my question is: I'm no longer able to login to my old Mac and upgrade the software, I do have my iLok with my license for PT10. If I buy the upgrade do they provide me with the full download of PT 12 and do I only have to update my iLok with the new license, or I'm I only able to download and instal the PT 12 upgrade when PT10 is installed on your Mac?

Burry van der Graaf ONce you pay for the upgrade Avid will send you a new PT 12 license to your ilok account, and then you will transfer it to your ilok. then through your Avid user account they will provide you a link to download PT 12 and then you will install it on the new mac. If you installed PT 10 on the new mac it will still be there if you install PT 12 but there are issues with PT 10 and Yosemite.

Seeing you did not upgrade before Jan 1 2016 to PT 12 it will cost you $300 I believe called "Annual reinstatement plan" And yes you get one year support and then if you don't continue the support plan a year later you can still use the version you have. So, what about "used" PT licenses sold on eBay where you need a blank iLok2 usb? Does anyone have any knowledge about that? Can I purchase an update plan for those? Also, if they offer to deposit the license into your iLok2 account, is that your license with no ties to anything or anyone else? Does Avid have some kind of bulk licensing option where someone can buy and distribute licenses to iLok account because with Windows 7 licenses sold at a discount, you're basically buying a developer license which can become invalid later on. Sorry about all the questions. For the license deposit, does that mean the seller is an authorized dealer for Avid or similar?

I already read that before posting but thanks for the reply. I went ahead and called Avid. They had something to say about it. Essentially...unless you're going through the TOO protocol (which ONLY applies to the PTHD version with or without hardware or AVID hardware by itself), then you're buying someone else's license and it will never be yours. For non HD version, the license will have to be transferred via iLok and that is permissable. Also, only Avid can deposit licenses, no one else can. So if they offer to do that...it's a scam. There was more but this should be enough for anyone reading this.

I have PT 10 it glitches on my mac with El Capitan, since Yosemite, I don understand why Avid is doing this, seems more simple to upgrade and own it, I need to have a DWA better than the Garage band I ve been using for the last couple of years, Do you suggest any other besides PT software? If you had upgraded, but the final date to upgrade was March 1st as they had extended it. Next year will be $400 if you want to keep upgrading pro tools hd of course that could change.

I know these are the obvious, but Avid's got us by the wallets...I am testing out Reaper and some other DAWs for the first time in a while. Lots of great hardware out there that's not made by Avid. Focusrite is coming out with nice new hardware that works with PT HD or with any other DAW. There area a lot of viable options out there if your willing to jump ship. I'm not yet but I am testing the waters.

+TheMaddazhell you most likely should get standard pro tools. You can't buy pro tools HD without buying a piece of Avid Hardware. Unless you find someone selling it on eBay. Best bet is standard pro tools which you can buy a perpetual license meaning you own it for 600 for PT12 and get one year of support and updates but after the year runs out you know longer get updates but can keep using whatever version you have when your support plan runs out. It's 100 a year to continue receiving updates as long as you don't let your support plan run out. Pro Tools HD works with other interfaces but you are limited to 32 tracks on a single pass of recording. But you don't have that many You might also just want to find a pro tools license. You could also just find a used pro tools 11 license and ILOK on eBay and maybe save money, they charge 300 to upgrade from 11 to 12. PTHD will run around 1300 or more for a ILOK and license on eBay. I see on EBay PT perpetual going for 389 with ILOK....

Looks like yes you can keep the software, but Avid states you will need to renew your plan to continue to get updates, what they don't say is what happens if your plan runs out, that is still a mystery you may get to keep whatever version you wound up with at the end of the one year PT 12.1.4 or whatever but will it cost you more than 200 to buy back in...

Pro Tools HD is 600 a year, 200 a year is for standard PT not HD. You cannot rent HD like you can the standard version. So if you have PT HD and you pay 600 you will get 12 HD, and 11HD will be removed from your ilok. Then if you do not renew your support plan, you can keep PTHD12 but you will have to some how buy back into PTHD to say get PT 13 but Avid has not made this clear on what the cost will be if you let your plan run out. You can buy standard PT for 899 I think it was and you own it, but then you have to buy the next version when it comes out for another crazy amount of money so renting it is the cheaper way to go in the end. But again that is only for the non hd version.

I will have to make a call to Avid on this as I have PT HD and Non HD. From Avid : your new purchase, upgrade, or crossgrade comes with a one-year plan, which will need to be renewed annually for $199/year (Pro Tools) or $599/year (Pro Tools | HD) to continue receiving upgrades. Roosevelt Fanklin Hey Rosewood. I still had the graphic bugs in PT 12 which I rented for one month non HD and my mac pro now running 10.10.4. It does not happen with my macbookpro. That being said. If I have several tracks in my session it pretty much goes away or if I run Quartzz debug it goes away instantly, cant believe its still there though. Some folks have it some don't. I saw a guy with a new mac pro had it, and a guy with a retina with geforce graphics had it. I also have video playback issues as well. If I have two tracks and a 1080p h264 video it plays fine, but once I import the multi track the video falls out of sync really quickly and plays back glitchy. Quartz Debug does not fix that issue. I have to compress down to 720 p or lower to get video to playback smooth and in sync in big sessions. In PT 10 and MT Lion it always just worked.

You could get an older version on ebay at it might come with an ilok, and there was pro tools free I believe which is a version with few options but it lets you test drive it a bit but not sure if they still offer it,

I am still working in MT Lion and PT 11 and 10. 11 is too buggy for me in 10.10 and I do a lot of lock to video and the video playback has been glitchy in Yosemite and PT11. I have not time to test it with quartz running in the background in 10.10.3 yet but will get to it. I have to get my work done on my reliable setup. !! has been weird with video in general even in MT Lion. When I tested video with 12 it was smooth.

+Watchman4u If you are on an older computer, just wipe your computer and install whatever OS you want from a USB drive. Google, clean instal Mac OS X. Make sure you backup all your stuff because it will be erasing your hard drive to start fresh. There is no other way to downgrade mac OS X. But your computer will be brand new and a lot faster anyway, I clean install every year. I also have to say, the upgrade to 12 is totally worth it. I'd just do it and stick with 12 forever. for 200 bucks, you'll be getting your money's worth. I just did it and going back to PT10 or 9 is so slow.

+D Fink I just wanna to make sure I don't lose data I'm not so tech savvy , I'm running a Mac Mid 10-11 w/4 Ram & it worked fine unless I got crazy with plugin's…I was going to leave it @ snow leopard but Safari quit working. Thats the only browser I want to use. I was looking to go w/SSD upgrade for faster "disk" data recovery …. So you think the new 64 bit engine will be more efficient than PT9 on Snow Leopard? Snow Leopard That was a Great OS imho very quick. But then I uploaded to Yosemite & it seems to be bloated …& my PT went chaos , I had it all backed up on a back up drive via Time Capsule but the External HD died….I can'r get it to boot up??? Thx for the help. I love PT & I hate Avid. The customer service has always been a smack in the face. You have to PAY them a LOT of money to ask a question about their Product thats very convoluted @ times. Sweetwater hooked me up when I 1st went PT so that saved me a LOT of $. This whole in the Cloud computing IDK I don't have a good feeling about it. It should be on Hard copy always.

THIS JUST IN !!!!!!! Avid just announced this on their facebook page of all places... about what you will have to pay if your upgrade support plan lapses... Avid: "Hey all... there has been some confusion with support that I want to clarify. Avid in no way expects customers to re buy their valuable hardware to get current "gee thanks Avid". If a customers lapses on support, they will have a 30 day grace period to get back on with no additional fees. If they fall off support for longer than the 30 day window, our policy is that they pay for the time lapsed (prorated), plus for the new upcoming year plus a 25% reinstatement fee for the new year. HTH to clear things up. marianna.montagueAvidcommunity" 25% reinstatement fee which is $150 for HD users plus every day you did not pay for the upgrade added as well. Which is an additional $50 bucks a month... starting to sound like a credit card company. Guess that's better than having to buy into PT HD at some crazy price, but wait, that's 750 plus another 50 per month.... UGH! If you go a full year without upgrading it's 1350.00 that is crazy!

Really don't see how preventing people from upgrading licenses is in any way a good idea. Even for vanilla. also, sibelius and artist control surfaces are allegedly getting their own upgrade and support plan. And they too will allegedly become unupgradable if you don't cough up some dough. LOL.

Another very important thing you did not mention the video (your excellent) If you pay $ 600 for a package PRO TOOLS 12 + PLUG-IN bonus When you stop paying next year - package PLUG-IN bonus stops ... Difficult to understand this plan - it just does not make sense!

+Class-A-Studio/Dudi Tamir Yes its true and things have changed since I made this video, like pro tools hd is $400 a year after the first year at $600. They have made other changes as well always best to check with your authorized avid dealer on the updates and Avid's website.
