Mod from 79, that was my musical birth. 89 Madchester was a rebirth, but post 96, new music was only ‘liked’ didn’t excite me, but last Feb accidentally found Ren, he’s up there with David Bowie and Kevin Rowland as a true artist - music before sales. ❤
@littleraven133
@littleraven133 5 ай бұрын
@spruce381 I often mention Bowie when trying to explain how Ren is different. Bowie made art. If it sold, that was great, but at the end of the day, he made music for himself. And not in a selfish way. In an honest way. I see that in Ren. He's has genuinely restored my faith in music. I know that sounds corny, it's just true.

How to Be Me “Live” is one I think you’ll love. She will show you how emotionally connected to him she is. They consider each other music siblings and their harmonies are almost just as good as actually family harmonies, which I think is almost impossible to duplicate. But that one (make sure you do the live version) will also show the respect she has for him and respect for person and the song they are singing about. Enjoy, I’ll keep watching ☺️

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement, I love that the two of them can almost tell what the other is thinking as they look into each others eyes and sing. It's magic, I have sang for over 20 years and have had many incredible harmonies with amazing vocalists but nothing ever like these two have, it feels so organic. As someone who grew up singing and playing multiple instruments I envy their abilities, seems like the whole world just disappears from around and its just the two of them. I love how you referenced familiar harmonies because it's almost like they grew up from a very young age bouncing their voices off of one another and finding their own tone, while keeping a very familiar connection.

Ren and his entire circle of musician friends remind me of that raw, important energy. I have found so much incredible music created and performed by these artists. Check out his band, The Big Push. Romaine Axisa is a band member and has some great music in his solo career. Peace!

They call themselves musical siblings, I actually think they know each other so well their voices just know how to meld together like magic! I saw them singing live together the other week and it was amazing (Ren's first gig in 5 years). They both did solo sets and were both incredible. I think they have more musicality in their little fingers than most more well known artists. I do wonder if Ren has perfect pitch, certainly his internal metronome is to be envied!! Really enjoying your Ren reactions 🖤

21:37 Even though this is live and one take, only using lav mics, a wireless mic on the guitar, and the natural reverb of the location, Ren has said that he never does anything other then fix the volume in post. He has said in an interview that he can take up to 12 hours working on one video, only equalizing the volume through the whole song, but not changing anything else. This is why it sounds so clear and even, regardless of the in and out volume the lav mics would have. He does this for all his live videos- even busking outside with his band The Big Push. (It's fun that you can hear Chinchilla run her fingernails through the gel in her hair after her first verse) 😊 His videographer friend Samuel Perry-Falvey is a huge talent, as well. They have worked together for years, find amazing locations in Brighton for the acoustics and story, and the filming is really part of the song, too. You will find out more about his talent the more you watch Ren's videos.

Ren has impeccable accuracy with regard to who his style and his emotive qualities mesh with. The live video of How to Be Me is a duet with Chichilla that is super tight. Hi from the UK Tim. Another great Ren reaction. He is indeed a breath of fresh air. You’ve already had lots of suggestions, but I’ll add another few in! Some early Ren like, Patience and his song Crutch ft Bibi. Then some fun ones like Power or Bongo Bong by The Big Push. Any of his busking with the Big Push (red suspenders version) or there’s busking with Sam Tompkins and also Chinchilla. Please also react to his other duet with Chinchilla How to be Me Live…you think you had goosebumps watching this one, you won’t believe how the song will make you feel. Ren is not just a musical genius he has the ability to find natural or man made locations with the perfect resonance and acoustic characteristics for the track he is going to perform. Hi Ren (dark closed basement multiple room for reverb and echo) This track another basement small room smaller corridors each end resonance with reverb, One to check out Ren & Sam Tompkins - Blind Eyed Ft. Angry Car Park Attendant concreate car park stairwells etc the whole thing just works even though they were chased out. The trilogy Jenny, Screach and Violet closed alleys high walls open brick area's to narrow corridors and stairwells each change in location a subtle change in the acoustic resonance to go with tempo or story line changes. Non of these songs sound even close to the same if done without the location of the live versions.

Oh I knew you would love this! They’re the best musical “siblings”. Ren has called her his sister from another mister and a female version of himself due to their similar approach to music. For me I think it shows in the fact that they both have that something special that draws you in and demands attention. To see it fully for Chinchilla, check out her live version of Fingers. This song always reminds me that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. And my favourite line in this is so simple, totally devoid of all the clever metaphors that he is so good at using, but it hits soooo hard: “I’m scared of being okay cause all things change”. I think anyone who has been through any struggles can relate to that feeling of not trusting that anything good will last. You can’t just enjoy it because you’re busy worrying about how long it will last and the feeling that will come when it’s gone. And then good days just make the darkness feel so much worse because you remember the light that’s gone… Ren is so special. He keeps being so relatable that it reminds us that we’re not alone. And we will always make room for more RENegades down the Ren rabbit hole cause we all need his light in the darkness 🐰🕳️ I know most people will recommend their duet How To Be Me after this, but I think it would be even more interesting if you react to Crutch feat. Bibi. You’ve just heard Ren be very clean. Crutch will give you probably the most grit/distortion we’ve heard from Ren so far. Personally I am hoping for even more in the future, but I am biased as a metal head 😂 Another interesting one is his busking cover of Nirvana. Whatever you choose to react to, I just want to see you deeper down the rabbit hole 🐰🕳️

Oh, Tim, top 5 reaction/analysis in my humble opinion, and I have heard them all-without exaggeration. You bring a skillful perspective to Chalk Outlines which educates and enhances the listening. As frequent as your interruptions were, nevertheless, you kept a smooth flow which felt very natural. There is nothing Ren does which is not deliberate; nothing he releases that is not topflight and worth many listens. New subscriber and looking forward to your rabbit hole experience. PS- your observation about Ren's one take/live videos is spot on. Music needed a Ren (and Chinchilla). I'm 75 and enamored of this Welsh Singer/Writer/Poet/Actor/Producer/Multi-instrumentalist. Ren is incredibly talented. A lot of his songs are one-takes for authenticity. He also does most of his own beats and pre and post production. His catalogue is huge and diverse: RAP, rock, soul, storytelling folk, retakes and covers. He had an excellent band called The Big Push that did mostly covers with some originals. I recommend their version of War Pigs and I Shot the Sheriff as well as a couple of originals: Icarus and Swan Song. For solo work: The Hunger, Genesis, The Tale of Jenny and Screech (all three parts) and maybe The Money Game (all three parts). Additionally, he collaborated with Chinchilla on two gorgeous tracks Chalk Outlines and How to Be Me. That’s barely scratching the surface. Welcome to the Ren Rabbithole. Enjoy the ride. Just to clarify, Ren is not mentally ill. He went through almost ten years of misdiagnosis from bipolar disorder to M.E. only to find out that he had Lymes disease. At its worst point, his sickness made him so ill he couldn’t get out of bed for almost a year. He was very weak and severely underweight because he couldn’t keep a lot of food down. In the past two years, he has received stem cell transplants to help repair some of the damage done by having untreated Lyme disease for so long. He is doing much better now though he still deals with Chronic Pain and Autoimmunity that severely limits his diet. He went through Hell and chose to learn from the experience and kindly pass on his wisdom and artistry to others. He is an Artist in the best sense of the word. 💜😊💜 #freesickboi

CHINCHILLA! congratulations, Tim! For her best vocals: Fingers Live, Little Girl Gone (Live Requiem), and 1:5 Live. She’s at the top of the best female singers out there right now, and on the come up. 💕

Air brushing the voice is such an accurate way of describing what happens in music today. It reminds me of the argument I have for still mixing with records. Digital lacks those little pops and crackles of background noise. That sounds like a good thing until you remember life has background noise. It's the imperfect aspect that makes those perfect moments. Just like this duet. You'd lose the connection between these two if you ran a studio mix of this. Just a beautiful moment of music.

I'm a new sub... and a Renegade - love love love Ren - You are gonna be blown blown blown (even more) - ps. I'm from UK and we call 'em 'goosebumps' - well, I do anyhow... and I got them at exactly the same place - and I've lost count of how many times I've seen this. Looking forward to your future Ren reactions...

I am 60 years old, all my life listening to rock music from 60s and 70s till now. Ren made me love RAP and Hip Hop, he is a modern bard and more... Ren and Dimash are the greatest in todays music. So different the two of them and everyone unique. Dimash is the best voice in the universe, Ren is the younger brother i never had...

You should check his busking sessions, his busking with his group "The Big Push" where they do mostly rock and metal covers, Sting and few others. What i can say about Ren is this - Ren is music he is. Ren, Dimash, Lara Fabian, Chinchilla, Asaf Avidan, Angelina Jordan, Diana Ankudinova, Sam Tompkins are the new gods of music go check them all out.

Your reactions are good, you clearly connect emotionally. Don’t be afraid to express the emotions that you feel when listening, that’s not a criticism. It’s a viewer even if I am just one viewer saying it’s Ok, we feel the same things. The combination of your technical analysis and willingness to be vulnerable connects with the people who connect with the music you are reacting to. Keep being you

REN’s music/art to me is like a warm blanket.. he knows pain, my pain, everyone’s pain, giving it shape like a sculptor. His humor is uplifting, their’s is. You’ll be meeting his friends too, more than one rabbit hole to explore. His music is healing. I’ve been so fortunate to be invoked, invited to dissolve when I was four years old: la Mama Mia, Maria Callas (still touches me to the core). Grew up in the sixties, music has always been my escape from the pain (started when I was only six) but Ren is from another dimension. One cannot not love him. ❤

Ren's use of space (silence) in the beginning of the song adds so much. It builds anticipation while allowing time for listeners to think about the lyrics.

Loving the reactions so far and love that you're taking suggestions from the comments. Not surprising that you've managed to get into Ren because he's been dominating KZbin for the past year. There's a few artists/songs that have become staples that almost all reactors are drawn to. 'Take Hold of the Flame (live in Tokyo 1984)' by Queensryche, for example. Geoff Tate was a monster vocalist through the 80's and 90's, and is still pretty impressive today. If I had my way, however, I'd be more interested to see someone finally approach Toad the Wet Sprocket. There's almost endless live performances by them and with three great singers, there's some wonderful harmonies. Hard to choose a place to start there. Lol.

Goosebumps every time I hear this and I'm from the UK! Loving your channel and style and classy reactions. How to Be Me Live is stunning. Chinchilla either Fingers Live for Hunger TV or 5:1 are too good to be true, she is truly off the scale. Ren's Back on 74 is one of my all-time ( 40 years worth ) favourites.

What stands out to me in this one is how they can both authentically connect to the lyrics at an emotional level. It makes the moments truly captivating in the splasher moments when she gets close enough to be heard on his microphone with the harmony. They both have impressive vocal range and the ability to add natural effects to their sound. The little cries as they are pulling away from the phrasing is truly captivating. Matches the depth (and content) of the lyrics very well. Being accepting of their vulnerabilities? They have quite obviously lived a life of experiences far beyond their years.

Man I love your reactions. For me, you hit on all the areas of music & performance that I look for. The backing up is great & appreciated. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference for the viewers. You are quickly becoming one of my go-to reactors Eta - I really appreciate your honesty too. I have felt the same way about their initial harmonies in a couple spots. For me that adds to the performance by maintaining the moment. That instant of creation is where the humanity lies. Thanks for just saying it like it is 🙏🏻

I am glad for you, digging down the rabbit hole of Ren, and Chinchilla. Fantastic independent artists. I am an elder man and as you mentioned very happy to find great artist that you don't hear on the radio or Spotyfy. My suggestions are Dimash Qudarbergen from Kasakstan, probably the best vokalist on earth and Dan Vasc from Brasil, a metal singer but with a very versitile voice. Look forward to more reaction videos from you. Best wishes. Anders, Stockholm, Sweden.
