In this video, I react for the first time to the Welsh singer Ren and English singer Chinchilla performing “Chalk Outlines”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. This is an amazing tune and I am so glad I finally reacted to it!

Hello, gorgeous! I'm Lolli, your Fairy Voice Mother. I am a voice teacher & vocal anatomy nerd specialising in contemporary techniques. I have a degree in vocal performance, and I am studying for a masters degree in voice pedagogy. I sing all the time in styles such as pop, jazz, rock, metal, soul, Hindustani, Carnatic and I am constantly learning and practicing new vocal skills. I just bloody love singing. It's my favourite thing in the whole world, and because I love you, I want you to sing too. I believe everyone can sing, and my mission with this channel is to break down techniques that are so often portrayed as something to be exclusively accessed by people with a special talent. Well. Special talents can be learnt, and I am here to teach them to you.
For voice lessons, workshops and video submissions please check out my website www.thefairyvo...
I'm so excited to be a part of your singing journey, It's one that truly never ends.
Love you forever,
The Fairy Voice Mother x

When depression becomes normal, being ok is terrifying. You know it's not going to last long, and you can't enjoy it because of that anxiety. "When and how will this end?" Yeah, it's rough.

At 51 I was just diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I was told I've probably had it most of my adult life. I've struggled mentally for as long as I can remember. Depression, anxiety, cog fog, attention issues, blah blah. To now learn that most if not all of it could have just been chewed up wiring... who am I really? Who could I have been. It's got me really f-ed up. F-ed enough that I finally went into thrapy. Life really be life-ing on us sometimes! ❤

Just wanted to say that, as someone who has struggled with severe anxiety and depression, the part where you pointed out that it’s really difficult “because it’s a fear of yourself” hit me as hard as the song did. I’ve never heard it simplified that way before and my god, that resonates. Thank you for that. Seriously.

One of the great truths in life is that Ren is *always* so much better than you remembered. Even when what you remember was that the last thing you heard from him was life-changing. "Scared of being OK, cause all things change" - for me, I'm scared of being OK because if I were ever to get better and then get worse again... this time, I know how bad it gets, and also, how many people you lose, and also, how much work (and how long it can take) to recover even just to the point I've fought for today (which is FAR from OK). And since I've been on Disability for 19.5 years, if I ever got better to the point of being "OK," I don't think I could ever fully *trust* that I wouldn't crash again. I got an extra layer of emotional watching you watch this just because I know you had that voice-focused conversation with Chinchilla and felt that vocalist kinship strongly with her. I can't imagine we'll ever see another reactor react to Chalk Outlines only *after* having an in-depth conversation like that with her. Unique.

I honestly had forgotten that you haven't yet done their duets. I think I had just assumed that you listened to them on your own and therefore weren't going to "react" to them. They were SOOOOO hot in the reaction community that it was hard to imagine you just not having gotten to them. That's not a judgement, just an observation. This song gets me every time. I myself have never been on psychotropics for depression or anxiety, etc. But someone very very near and dear to me was for many years. And whenever she would take them I could almost watch her disappear before my eyes, like a slow leak from an inflatable pool toy, and there would just be this empty person in her stead that kinda sorta resembled her. I've probably heard this song 200+ times, and still every time I hear Chinchilla chime in with the word "Sertaline" it absolutely destroys me. "The feeling goes, and you draw a chalk outline"...wheeeeww. Those words are like a baseball bat across the head. IDK what is going on with our society, where such a large number of us need to be on these life long subscriptions to mood altering drugs. IDK if it's the water, the air, or the fake food we eat...our lifestyles, or what. I don't want to say it's a scam for the pharmaceuticals to collect a tax from us, but I'd be lying if I said if didn't feel like it sometimes. Whatever it is we absolutely MUST get to the bottom of it. We are systematically homogenizing our young people right out of what makes them unique and special, and it's absolutely tragic. This is not to say that they are not appropriate for some people. or even most of the people that are on them. I am not qualified to say. But if so, the fact that we've made a world where this course of action is in any way appropriate for so many, is a damning indictment on our society as a whole. Please, please, please... I beg of you to do their live duet of "How to Be Me". Name your price...I'll donor it right now. Aside from the fact that I think Ren's message on mental health is a modern equivalent to Orwell's in the past, this particular performance is absolutely gorgeous. And I would imagine someone of your singing expertise would have a field day with it.

Have you seen those video shorts where a young child hears, or sees colors, for the first time? Having lived almost 75 years before encountering Ren or being very familiar with music, that was the intensity of my reaction, starting with Hi Ren and bringing me here. Your reaction provided an exponential increase in discovery and appreciation, Thank you, Lolli! ... Subscribing.

And it's not always only yourself you have to be scared of changing, life and other people sometimes has a way of rearending you when you least expect it. Been there, done that. Had a rough 2-year stint not too long ago when i too was on meds for depression and that whole shebang. This song resonates deeply in my soul and i absolutely adore their chemistry. This song, in my humble opinion, is perfection.
