If anyone has played Tarkov, they should understand why a SHTF or WROL situation would be terrible. Walking through the streets of an abandoned town, you exit concealment, and someone just lays into you and kills you before you even have a chance to address them. It doesn't strike me as a good time...yes, as a game it's fun, but I would not want Tarkov to be a real life scenario.

@Redneck_Heathen
@Redneck_Heathen 3 ай бұрын
Improvising is what you do as a last-ditch effort to succeed in the absence of a plan. Planning to improvise is just a fancy way to say you didn’t plan. The logic is akin to saying “I don’t need to carry a gun to defend myself, If the need arises I can just find something around me to use as a weapon.” It goes against the most basic idea behind why we bother owning and training with these weapons in the first place. That being having the gear and skill sets you need ahead of time so you don’t have to improvise.

I just made it out of Western NC yesterday. I can’t even really explain it all, even to myself, but no matter how prepared you think you are, you aren’t. -it didn’t turn into mad max. It was the community coming together to help everyone out. When the govt didn’t show up, neighbors, churches and strangers did. We made it through 4 days of hell with each other. -AR was basically useless. Way too big, cumbersome and conspicuous when your days involve manual labor getting water and helping clear roads -a low profile holster and a Glock 48 or Sig 365 was more than enough. That’s what most of us were carrying. Shit only escalates as far as everyone wants it to, and nobody wanted it to. -water was by far the biggest problem. Collecting it, purifying it, and distributing to those who needed it -everyday, not trauma, medical was another concern. Minor cuts and scrapes were getting infected. -fuel and power were another major issue. People weren’t conservative enough with it at first, and generators and vehicles were running dry by day 3. Having a hybrid maverick was actually huge, because I could make water runs and go scout open routes without using any fuel.

I think there's a tendency for people to look at a basic possible problem - "the police aren't responding except for really serious stuff / very quickly / at all, and most people have no familiarity with a world where they're responsible for their own security" -- and consider the worst that could happen (total chaos, roving murderous bandits), which is reasonable to consider, but then assume that the worst case scenario not will definitely happen, but will be happening all the time. The other side of things is that, while people can be desperate, nobody actually believes that even in a massive regional disruption that order won't *ever* be restored.

@@iankrase8061 that’s spot on. There was some limited gunfire most nights, but now that we’re out of it I’m 99% sure most of it was just idiots getting drunk. Still terrifying in the dark, alone, knowing no help except your neighbors is coming. But in the morning you have to wake up, your neighbors are still your neighbors. I didn’t even really want to scare them by carrying my AR to my truck, because I didn’t want to give anyone a reason to be more afraid than they already were. To @brassfacts points in other videos, most people overlook water and food preps, which are the most important, and in any real world scenario a PDW is likely the absolute most you’ll ever need

But in the morning the sun comes up, your neighbors are there, they’ll still be your neighbors after it’s over, and you realize eventually help will come. In DayZ you start out on the beach with the clothes on your back, maybe a soda and a piece of fruit. You don't start out with a rifle in your hand, a full up plate carrier, and a house full of food. The issue here, is that the people who make survival games their starting frame of reference would see things that way. Once you're established going fishing while one of your buddies is on zombie watch with the MP5SD becomes the order of the day. You don't have to go looting, because things like gardening, ranching, and fishing are better uses of your time.

Honestly this is the most sensible thing I've seen in awhile. A 200 cow dairy can keep 500 people alive pretty much indefinitely, and 500 people can do a lot of labor. Realistically it wouldn't be a feudal system, it'd be a commune, and they'd organize pretty quickly. Cooperation trumps individualism when domestication and agriculture exist which is why human civilization exists and neandertal civilization does not. I bet u and your 3 other friends you train with will totally have a chance to raid a well fed 200 man entrenched position. They'll never see you coming and your cqb training will totally work. They definitely wouldn't have the foresight to have clean sightlines out to 2000 yards with properly zeroed rifles.

The fact of the matter is, by the time it's TIME to loot, most lawful people will have already lapsed on their timeframe to even be able to loot. Whether that be because of factors such as- the scrubs already got to it before you expended your stores or whether that be because it's quite likely stores of critical items such as food, water, and medicine, will have been exhausted legally by the time we all put our assless chaps on and Mad Max at each other. Really. It takes moving mountains to get us all in a state of open armed conflict in a first world nation on the scale where breaking into critical infrastructure like hospitals in order to loot insulin is even slightly morally tenable. Love that you covered this and I've been considering posting similar thoughts myself. I just don't give enough of a shit to take the time to articulate these things to people. So I'm glad you do.

Doesn't mean it's useless or detrimental in any way, getting out and shooting and using the things you've bought it fun and a good hobby/training but the speed and dynamic nature of disaster preparedness very difficult and usually means all the little "plans" and gadgets people have for such emergencies get lost or forgotten in the panic. Just learning medical skills and how to be calm in stressful situations can go a LONG way for most folks.

Love the "how many firefights do you think you'll win" sentiment. In a survival situation, you never want to get into a firefight...ever. Getting through one and leaving with the same number of people and all the body functionality you came with is a miracle in itself. Even professional soldiers with overwhelming technological advantage, access to billion dollar ordnance to support their mission, and the best current tactics and training in the world lose people. If you keep playing that game, eventually you're going to die or lose someone you deeply care about. Guns are an essential tool that you should be proficient with, but should be the last resort when all other avenues of diplomacy have failed and the imminent cost to life outweighs the risks of using lethal force.

“You loot, we shoot” is common enough after disasters that anyone thinking it’s viable is someone to be heavily avoided. The only scenario I could see where “looting” would take place is in a Red Dawn type scenario. Where civilians are way behind friendly lines and cut off from normal logistics or being supplied via airdrops.

To be fair, a lot of those "buy something with spare parts available and shooting a common caliber" comments don't HAVE to be about looting. They can just as easily be about trading or sharing, which are excellent things to do if the opportunity presents itself. After all, compatible calibers are a big deal for military weapons, and they're definitely not planning to send a platoon to the abandoned Walmart for resupply: they just want to make sure that you can resupply your buddy. And there are pre-emergency aspects too. If parts for your gun are backordered or ammo is ALWAYS scarce in your oddball caliber, that's going to have an effect on both your training and your ability to maintain your preparedness even when everything is normal.

Looting a dead body is crazy when you think dollar value. If you mange to win a firefight and you loot a guy with an actually combat load (7mags) of 5.56 and they only got off one magazine, that leaves you 6 mags or 180 RDs. At 50 cents a round that’s 90$. You’re leaving your cover/concealment for 90$ of ammo if you buy it today. Makes me want to carry more valuable loot so the guy that shoots and loots me has something to get excited about. What they disregard is that for every doomsday prepper there’s a thousand regular people who would want to get back to watching sunday night football and heading into the office on monday, and the majority often get their way. I’m all for being prepared for disaster, but disaster is followed by reform. It’s not like there haven’t been SHTF moments in modern times. People hunker down with their communities until a provisional government is formed, they get third party aid, or find the means to move out of the region. Anyone who thinks they’ll be living out their warlord fantasy is delusional. This isn’t Fallout. Even if a truly shit situation were to happen, it most likely wouldn’t last longer than a few months once the initial panic passed and people started working to restore their normal lives (turns out, people aren’t content living in disgusting sheds - guess Bethseda never figured that out).

Picking up supplies from dead enemies isn't really a bad thing, but if things get bad enough, or YOUR bad enough to start looting simple civilians and their houses... You're a raider and will be dealt with as a raider. Tens of thousands of people in this country are more prepared than you, trained more than you, have better relations with their communities than you. Pockets of righteous, ordered civilization WILL survive anything you can. And they won't put up with nonsense. So go ahead, think you're going to be billy-badass and take what you want.
