ABOUT ME:
I’m Liam Harrison, Bolton born and bred. I’m a lover of Golf, life and laughter.
Started Golf 12 years ago after packing in football when i was 28 due to a back injury.
I started the KZbin channel as a laugh and a Wim, to make me practice but that went out the window as i started vlogging, loving being on camera but more so the interaction with my #golfmates.
In 14 months i have seen the channel evolve and become the only real golf community on KZbin which i am extremly proud of.
I would like to thank all the #golfmates that have been with us and supported us and the channel from the start. Also not forgetting our new #golfmates that may have only just come across the channel.
The Fundamentals
Before we start with the steps of how to hit a golf ball, let’s go over some of the basic golf lingo.
Stance - The position of your feet and legs as you prepare to hit the ball. Your stance will provide the foundation of your entire swing, from backswing to follow through.
Address - Once you’ve taken your stance, grip, and are set in your posture, you address the ball by placing the clubhead on the ground behind the ball.
Grounding the Club - This term refers to the point when your club touches the ground while you are addressing the ball.
Target - The direction you want to hit the ball towards.
Fairway - The section of a golf course with short grass between the tee and green.
Green - Also called the putting green, this is where you will find the hole!
Get Your Stance
The stance is the foundation of every golf swing. If your stance is off, your whole swing could be affected! The details of a proper stance seem straightforward, but many golfers work on it over a lifetime.
Proper Posture
The stance sets the base of your golf posture. Start by setting and bending your knees slightly and putting most of your weight on the balls of your feet.
Once you’ve done that, hold the club in front of you and begin to hinge at the hips, until the club reaches the ground. Your spine should be at a diagonal angle to the ground, which will allow to a full shoulder and hip turn on your backswing.
Tilt your body slightly so it feels like you’re leaning slightly away from your target. If you don’t get it right away, don’t worry. This is a lot to think about and it takes some time to coordinate everything.
Swing Step 1: The Takeaway
The takeaway is the first part of your backswing. It is generally the first 12-18 inches. It can set the stage for a great swing, or a not so awesome one. Start the takeaway by using your shoulders and arms moving as one to move the club back, away from the ball. Your arms will stay straight, but your wrists should gradually begin to hinge.
Swing Step 2: The Backswing
The backswing continues the backward motion of the takeaway. As your body reaches further back, avoid the inclination to bend your lead arm (left arm for most people.)
One helpful tip for the backswing is to bend your lead knee (usually the left knee) right at the ball. Turn your hips slightly, and begin to shift your weight towards your trail foot. Many golfers try to feel their head stay in line with the rest of their body.
Swing Step 3: The Downswing
What goes up, must come down! Once you reach the height of your backswing, it’s time for the downswing. This part of the swing is the fastest of all the components because the speed is part of what makes the ball go far and fast. You’re basically unwinding everything you did in the backswing in reverse. Start by shifting your weight towards your lead foot, then by turning your hips towards the target, then your arms and shoulders will follow.
Swing Step 4: The Follow Through
Even though you’ve already hit the ball, the follow through is still important. At the end of your swing, your hips should be facing the target, and the club should be swung all the way up and over your lead shoulder. All your weight should be on your lead foot (usually left foot). Only the tip of your other foot should be touching the ground. You should be balanced enough to hold this follow through position for 10 seconds (or more!)

OMP has taught me a great lesson(s). Technique being acceptable, the teachings of the OMP, make such a diffrence to your game. I played my first round of the season yesterday. Bear in mind that my swing has been rebuilt over the winter so distance is suffering but my line of flight is much more reliable. Before every hole and shot there was a moment of committing to playing to my present capabilities . What is safe, what is the low risk, and how do I remove my Brazils from the equation? The result? 2 over bogie for the round of 12, so 14 over par. Only 2 or 3 fairways not landed and almost all holes were 2 putted. A handful of OMG shots and none required intervention from the All Mighty. There was literally no hoping for a miracle. Singularly the best feeling round in years. What OMP seems to be teaching is how to play golf and not merely walking around in between golf swings. Simply marvelous. Many thanks to all the Golfmates and especially Pat for this. Who wouldn't want to play a round with him?

The best and most consistent parts of OMPs game are his distance control, he knows how far he hits each club, his lack of ego and most importantly his tempo. His tempo never changes, he commits to every shot and never gives up on a swing. If i play half as good as Pat when I'm 80 I'll be very happy. ⛳

When I became a Golfmate I was shooting in the high 90's but watching OMP has given me a whole new outlook and approach to the game. So far this year in my first two games I shot 91 and 88. I blew up on a couple of holes and I could be putting better but using OMP's approach just makes the game so much simpler and way more fun. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the show OMP. First of all he knows his limits and plays accordingly. He knows his course, knows were the dangers lie and plays accordingly. Familiarity with his game and his course knowledge simplifies his course management. He does not dilly dally with a pre shot routine, Knows where he want to go, pulls the club that will get him there, one practice swing and he's lying 1, repeats until he has holed the ball. I found it interesting that he uses a spotter for his putts. May try that. I currently get my line and for instance may say the line is one ball left of the hole. I see that line behind the ball but sometimes when I line up over the ball I lose the ling. Thanks for the brief introduction to old man Pat,

Thank you Liam and OMP for this wonderful video. I remember watching the late Doug Sanders giving a clinic when he was on the Senior Tour. He was hitting a 5 wood at a 200 yard sign dead on for 10 shots or more and never missed. Some one ask him in the crowd why he was hitting a 5 wood and he said like OMP there are no pictures on the score card and that is what I hit the most accurate. OMP knows how to play the mental game as well as the physical game.

OMP - great video guys - love the way Pat uses his hands to whip through the ball, old style golf, love it! Pat, remember Arthur Lees, he was our Pro for many years, he had great hands, broke his age with his scores in his seventies. The lag he could get without the full turn in his later years was terrific. Love the way you play the run ups, love that myself, sometimes even a hybrid (but they spring a bit) but brother and younger guys get to the green and want to use a 60 wedge, even when there is nothing to go over. Best lesson I received was from Queenie (Michael King) who was doing a golf day with Mick Jagger and the lesson was when chipping around the green, keep the ball on the grass as long as possible! Keep the videos coming guys, and young uns, watch Pat his lessons are invaluable, leave yer ego in the lockeroom 👌

Why on earth would people not like this. I am getting close to his age and after 60 years of playing, i now follow what he is doing and i thank him very much. I was very curious to know about the new clubs he got, but nobody seems to want to answer me, i know they are Ben Ross clubs, a brand not know in Oz. But i more interested in the flex he is know using. Keep up the lessons Pat, you are my saviour.

Old Man Pat. What an absolute cracking lesson. This is something that I needed so much. I play with an older gentleman, Terry , and he plays very similar game to Pat. Thanks Liam. Great to see the course. We should be back next week in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. As a suggestion when you talk about how the green is running, could you roll a couple of balls down the line the give us viewers a visual aid to see what you talk about. Thanks Liam. Mark.

I never get sick of watching OMP play the game, i also like they way he gets on with the game, there is far too much slow play today, i follow his lead, if i cant get to a green, i dont wait for people to get of it, i just hit my shot. He has shown the faster you play, the better its is.

I am a big fan of OMP. What I noticed is his preshot routines, same preshots all the time and very consistent. Thank you OMP and Golf Mates

Absolutely brilliant! Pats insights into 'playing a smart game' and also his very obvious skill. Fantastic driver and fairway shots but his putting!!! OMG OMP!?! Amazing... great stuff Pat & Liam.

Outstanding video; thank you. Have been trying to emulate OMP's course management methods and, I can truly say my game is improving. Im hitting eight irons into greens, from the fairway; my playing partners are hitting wedges but from the rough. I beat them both last night; I'm mid 70's yr, they're 42 yrs.

OMP the thinking man's golfer. What I'm taking from this - play within your ability, play within your handicap. Stay calm and keep the ball in play and in the right place. Thanks Pat

That putt on the stroke 6!!! You can't teach that via a video, but some amazing tips again by OMP. His attitude and approach to every shot is certainly something I'll be trying to adopt. GO OMP!!!

First time I’ve seen this channel and was lovely to see someone so experienced enjoying the game. One thing I’d say though is the miss isn’t long if the flag is at the back of the green. Never short side yourself

Great lesson OMP - leaving the ego at home and concentrating on course management gets the job done. I’m 60 and learning heaps through you and Liam about thinking more about strategy and not stressing so much about all the technicalities when playing a shot which just befuddles the head 👍🏻😊

The man is poetry in motion, none of his shots go higher than the trees, but rarely gets a bogey, just goes to show that this game is played between the ears! Old Man Pat is a legend!🍺
