While yes, prior to IVE’s debut Starship was already a known company- I don’t think they had a very big budget like the big4 do. They have MonstaX and Cosmic Girls, two mostly successful groups, but nothing „out of the ordinary“ successful like their Ex Company-Seniors SISTAR if you know what I mean. (Also Cravity but they’re still rookies) I feel like Starship wanted to play it on the safe side with IVE‘s debut, Yes they had two prior known members, but that doesn’t promise lasting success, and producing mini albums is expensive. After their company saw what a smash hit ELEVEN was, they might’ve wanted to test the waters with another single album to see if it would be successful too- because maybe ELEVEN could have just been a „one-hit-wonder“ (it wasn’t) But LOVE DIVE is still charting high after months of release (it was literally top 3 on Inkigayo like last week or something🤣) With that being said I understand why Starship was doing that- I don’t think it was out of laziness, now that they know of the lasting popularity that IVE has, and how much income they have brought their company i’m 90% sure their next official comeback will be a mini Album after seeing the Success of their 2 previous Releases. It would be very odd if it wasn’t

For ive i think starship is going the giving them a small amount of high quality songs to make sure ppl check out all of songs then get super curious for their first mini. rather than debuting with a mini where most ppl only listen to the title track. Im pretty sure its a marketing strategy to tease their music rather than lack of budget. Like holding back for a while just makes ppl go crazy when you finally release more songs. Being mysterious and reserved is a tactic thats been used quite a lot in kpop, it used to be idols told to have that image and now its transitioned into the amount of music. I hope that makes sense?? Its what bp, aespa, itzy and other groups do in their first year nowadays

I just don’t know why companies feel the need to give a successful group a concept change. Like, if the group started to fall off, if the concept started to get stale, then fine, I can see it. BUT Billlie just got the most attention they’ve ever gotten. Don’t pull a Weeekly please…
@yejiwannaweeb
@yejiwannaweeb 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but the industry is VERY competitive. Going viral like Billlie doesn't happen to everyone and behind a kpop group there is a company who wants or needs money. Companies don't create group for fun or for their passion in music and even if it's the case, ultimately they will have to make decisions for money. Some companies can go bankrupt because of the lack of popularity of their group and some idols don't even get paid because the company is or is getting poor. So, many groups and/or their companies become desperate and pull sometimes a Weeekly (I don't know for the case of Weeekly what actually happened though).

@ainultasneem7536 2 жыл бұрын
@@yejiwannaweeb I don't think you quite understood OP. Billlie atm has found their footing with their quirky concept and their virality is also a major plus. To change their concept just when they're starting to be reknowned for their image would be detrimental to their popularity and success. OP brought up Weeekly because they were well-known for their youthful peppy concept and have gone viral over After School, only to suddenly switch to girl crush and lose all the traction they received from fans and casual listeners that tuned in for their upbeat concept. It's one thing to test the waters if you're still unknown but it's another thing to essentially break your established image right after building it
@yejiwannaweeb
@yejiwannaweeb 2 жыл бұрын
@@ainultasneem7536 I fully understand what you and OP mean. My point is sometimes, despite the success of their unique sound, companies need or want money fast so they go back to a "safe" mainstream concept instead of their previous original ones. I'm just giving a possible reason behind those crazy decisions.

fearless is already very difficult to sing live. the song is in a low vocal range and low notes are actually harder to sing while dancing than high notes. you breathe heavily while you're dancing so forcing your vocals higher helps. what makes it worse is that lesserafim members' vocal ranges are much higher than the song so they have to strain to sing lower in their live stages. adding higher notes might actually help a bit? idk. and in response to 9:43, yunjin is a vocal powerhouse, chaewon was one of the best vocalists in izone (her voice is SO pretty), and the other members are good as well. they really deserve a song that shows off their vocals rather than one that forces them to sing in an uncomfortable range while still managing to sound unimpressive.

This is literally one of the reasons I haven't been able to be a fan of any 4th gen group(I mean, I'm not a k-popper anyway), even Purple Kiss. The girls have so much individuality when they cover less 'intense' songs and just chill(E.g- Their 'Adore U' cover), but I need to see that individuality in their own music. More precisely, in their title tracks. It feels like they haven't found that balance between doing the '4th gen thing' and showing their natural talent in all aspects. They do have some excellent B-sides though, 'Skip Skip', 'Hello', CWTA, 'Cursor' etc, just to name some of my favourites

Being a kpop fan since 2nd gen era, I saw lots of group have different concept on their each comeback like SNSD, Kara, T-ara, 4minute, etc. I think the biggest problem here are the 3rd and 4th gen fans being accustomed of their idols sticking in one concept. I followed SNSD too and there really was not a concept back then. Every comeback was a new era, a new set of costume, and a fresh concept. However, I do understand the frustration with concept changes. Back then, it's just the concept that changes. You still feel the individual "style" of the artist. With groups nowadays, they just do a 180 personality-wise and it jolts you in confusion. An example is Weekly. First, they were all really bright and cheery and all smiling. And then with Ven Para everyone put on death glares and all that. It's the same with older BG's too. There are a lot of concept changes that still feel "connected". Twice maintains their energy of unabashed femininity. Kep1er maintains this energetic and youthful vibe. RV maintains their exclusive and experimental vibe. BP has this edgy or punk vibe. Everglow maintains this sense of exploration and a bit of mysterious allure with each comeback. My problem with concept changes is when the members themselves change too quickly. Or maybe I just don't like girl crush that are too "in your face" and acting too tough.

I think that IVE coming back with single albums has worked with them pretty well, since their main focus is to promote their title tracks. Just think about other groups like Twice, for example, their title tracks were their main focus for a very long time and you could tell they didn't put too much efford and budget into their bsides at first, and not many people listened to them in comparison to their title tracks (it's a whole different story now tho), so to avoid that, I think that they don't think it's necessary when most people are just going to focus on the title track anyway. Just my pov, but I would like more music from them too

Also since they were writing their own songs, you can see that the lyrics to their songs are really sweet and have a lot of sentimental meaning. But I am also very biased, so I get why other people may not like it lol. I also think the choreography for three of their bsides really elevated the songs themselves for me. I don't really have anything regarding Le Sserafirm yet, but that's very much going to depend on their debut. Like I loved most of their debut songs, and I like the artistic style they were going for, however I also think that if they were to continue with that style for their next album or debut, that it's going to be way to similar and therefore become boring. Like this is fine, and perhaps one or two songs in similar style throughout their future albums in the b-sides, in order to keep the simplicity and groovy music style alive, but that it. My biggest issue with rookie groups (mainly girl groups) is how much a lot of their companies seem to be copying SME groups. Either: A. They keep switching concepts every era like Red Velvet or B. They try too hard to have a girl crush, space theme and lore like Aespa (wrapped up in experimental music). Weeekly and Billlie are great for cute and quirky concepts. They don’t need to change to songs like “Ven Para”. Which brings me to Purple Kiss. Why are they changing up so much? “Ponzana” was such a great debut and it was the perfect middle ground between the common girl crush concepts and the darker concepts that we see Dreamcatcher, Pixy, and Pink Fantasy thriving under. They should have just stuck with that. There are so few fourth gen groups out there like (G)I-DLE who can handle different concepts. Then you have TXT where musically, they can handle different concepts. Performance-wise… Y’all can watch Cheryl’s video lol And yeah, I think that experimental music is difficult to handle. I’d rather groups that I think are “boring” like Itzy, Lesserafim, and StayC (boring in terms of their music is enjoyable, but not something that’s groundbreaking to me) than NMIXX’s “O.O” or Kep1er’s “Wa Da Da”. I think that Starship is following what SME and YGE did with Blackpink and Aespa. Both groups started off with minimal discographies. What’s that do? It allows songs and videos to quickly rack up streams. Aespa didn’t have a full album until after a year. And Blackpink… we all know that they don’t have a discography. WHERE ARE THEY??? But yeah, this marketing tactic of having a more minimalist first year to build up a solid foundation and then expanding much more in the future is definitely common marketing strategy. And it’s proven to be effective. So, I can see Starship following Aespa’s lead and we’ll get a fuller album from IVE around their one year anniversary.

I disagree a little with your opinion on Kep1er. The problem isn't the rap or even the amount of it (sometimes). I really like UP! and its unusual song structure and rap verses. I actually think the rappers sing too much, and we don't get to hear more vocals from more members in the group. The producers are getting better at distributing lines on b-sides, but I still feel like we don't hear enough vocals from members like Yujin, Yeseo, Mashiro, and Bahiyyih. This is also a problem that I have with "no position" groups. We, as the audience, can tell who the company is treating as a Main, Sub, and Regular Vocalist or rapper. You don't have to call Youngeun and Chaehyun Main Vocalists for us to know that they are. You don't have to call Xiaoting and Bahiyyih sub Vocalist and rappers for us to know that they are. You don't have to call Dayeon a lead vocalist and rapper for us to know that she is. This "no official positions" thing in Kpop, I feel, kind of leads fans on in a sense that it keeps them anticipating for things to switch up or change each comeback when they're not going to (at least not very much) in the end. The most I'm ever going to hear the above mentioned members sing is in the Karaoke segments they get on reality or variety shows, and that feels weird. In comparison, I will likely always hear the rappers also sing in a Kep1er song. And personally, I don't think any of the sub vocals in Kep1er are incapable or don't fit the lines the rappers get to sing. This all being said, I am not attacking anyone in Kep1er. Dayeon's chorus in UP! is actually my favorite part of the song. Please don't take this the wrong way, fellow Kep1ians 🙏🏽

Have to agree. The funny thing is, the sub-vocalist Bahiyyih, is the second-best singer in the group, going off of technique. The gap is real close with her and Youngeun. Still, she's regulated to being the member who is nearly always at the bottom of every line distribution. Wake One really don't like that young girl.
@goldyd144
@goldyd144 2 жыл бұрын
@@ProphetMisfit09 It's a real mismanagement issue with her and Mashiro imo. She mentioned recently that she hasn't tried singing in a higher tone like she did with her lines in UP! in their recording behind-the-scenes, but she of course nailed it. My main problem right now with UP is that I feel like it needs one more chorus, and Yeseo and Hiyyih would've been perfect for that. It's obvious that Hiyyih is capable of singing whatever the producers give her (and she even said she got compliments during her recording session). If the producers were willing to give her not even just more lines, but lines that actually challenge her, then she'd be growing at the same pace Youngeun is. I can't say that I'm hopeful for it, however. She's still getting a lot of hate, especially in Japan, so that could be a reason for the issues with W1 at the moment. I can also honestly say that I think Mnet didn't expect her to debut and don't know what to do with her, so they're not trying as much as they could be with her. I predict she'll take the Somi route after her individual debut in that after she gets a bit more vocal lessons and training in her, people will actually be shocked that she can sing when she's been able to sing the whole time.

@@notmyname3556 I honestly really have a hard time talking about discourse on Dayeon, because any issues that the fandom or antis generally have with her aren't her fault, and it's hard for me personally to talk about it without feeling like I'm blaming her somehow indirectly. She has a very palatable singing and rapping voice, and it's easy to understand why producers like that. I find her to be a better rapper than she is a singer though, and would prefer to hear more rapping from her in Kep1er. I believe her and Chaehyun's voices were in the original versions of O.O.O too. My issues lie with producers and management when it comes to doing stuff like this. The problem with Kep1er is that it already feels like things aren't going to change, and they're only 5 months into their run as a group. As well, refer to the points explained in the previously mentioned "no positions" argument (the gist: there are positions. We know there are. It's misleading. Bahiyyih, Xiaoting, Mashiro, Yeseo, etc. aren't suddenly going to be Main Vocalist next comeback just because there's "no official positions" in the group). It's clear that after Kep1er, Dayeon's going to have a great career in Korea. It's just sad that international (primarily Western) fans are being pushed away from liking a genuinely talented and clearly kind person because of W1 allegedly favoring her, and Mnet doing so previously in GP999 (seriously weird move sending a team she wasn't on to her parent's house and making them write ketters to her in her childhood bedroom. Like, _super_ weird. Meanwhile, her team of primarily Chinese contestants had to pick sweet potatoes and sing for the elderly. Sorry this still bothers me. Wtf Mnet?!?!)

Mashiro tho, I don't think W1 knows what to do with her. The only reason I didn't say much is because they're not even a year old group yet. They are still trying to find their sound and domain. All my opinion but TLDR for the IVE comment I think that starship is going in marketing steps - deal with the izone hype, establish IVE as a group, establish IVE as individuals, establish IVE as a sound. I think starship purposely made IVE have a lesser amount of music to test the hype. Yes lots of groups put out an ep or a mini when they debut but sonically/musically I would assume that's to show some versatility (maybe stick a ballad in there) and simultaneously show an acquired musical direction. With IVE it's a little different because of the huge hype surrounding izone and the post izone life. Starting with a single will test out general public reception to not only wonyoung and yujin being in a new group, but also the group as a whole brand (which didn't work too well since everyone was still majorly focused on W & Y and there's no way starship didn't see all the wonyoung & friends thing). A second single is smart since it worked out so well sonically for them and maintains responses like "we want more music" (see aespa) and now I feel the right time to release an ep. The second single could also be to reinforce musical direction (rather than show diversity) but also allows a further attempt to reinforce the whole group as a whole brand which was the aim that failed to be completed last time. I feel an debut ep release is right for them now because IVE as a group and a brand is now a mainstream accepted idea and will allow for the next goal to be completed: focus on the individuals. This is already being pushed through the endorsements but ofc IVE is established as an idol group therefore therefore we may be getting more things like more difficult vocal lines for Liz/Yujin (not sure on who's main vocal) more consistently or more dance break oriented songs with the dance line (idk who's in it sorry) and variety appearances. This creates the standard fan view of an established idol group - a very talented group with very talented and entertaining individuals (cue the crack edits). The last and longest step remains which is IVE's "sound". This, I believe, will occur in a slow inclusion of different genres with a gradually extending catalogue of music e.g. start with elegantly conceptualised music(?), continue with this, slowly infuse other song types (typically starts with a ballad then evolves), repeat but with a vastly different sound to test, when this commercially fails switch and repeat. This leads me to believe that unfortunately for Planet Minjae, their first mini album will be in a minimum of a year's time if starship think they do not have a signature sound.

Seeing as most recent kpop groups have a rapper position its only natural that they will incorporate raps into their title tracks and if they didnt they probably wouldnt get many lines. I love the girls and I accompanied them during GP999 but their songs are not it for me :') I have a huge issue with Le Sserafim, the way HYBE presentend them felt WAY TOO Impersonal with their teasers. Whenever I watched content from them, it looked as if I'm watching models, and their songs just kinda followed the same path, they're not bad, but they don't have anything that feels remotely interesting. I was a really huge IZ*ONE stan and Chaewon was my ultimate bias, yet I can't get into the group and my interest for her sadly dropped.

When Ive promotes their songs, they perform them a lot. i think they preformed Eleven 21 times( but im not sure) it was around that but thats only on music shows. They preform them on weekly idol, their own variety show, music awards, whatever they are invited to etc. Then starship gives them this long break, then they come back the solution to this is to simply stop having them promote one song so much but i dont think starship wants to risk the views and trophies

Talking about ive i think that if they had flopped in their debut or didnt get all the attention they have now, more music would have been out, but since they are very famous they can do like bp in their debut (no hate to any of the two groups i love them and see similarities). I wanted to say that their 4 songs are in my repeat playlist of spotify they are so gooooood

What’s funny about NMIXX is that I am a very casual listener to kpop so even if I heard stellar reviews about NMIXX I probably wasn’t going to to check them out, hearing about this polarizing song AND actually liking the song after a few listens I instantly became a stan to the group and I can’t wait for more music. I think the charisma the girls can perform even with such a weird song is super telling

When will companies learn that not all girl groups have to have a rapper. Gfriend didn’t had unnecessary raps in their songs. Hate that I just realized it before they disbanded tho 😭 Kep1er’s Up was so good but the short raps were unnecessary and cringe? Hikaru is lucky she’s a good rapper but they gave her the worst lines.

I believe Billlie has had a girl crush concept already tho? Along with ringxring, they also released a perf video of flipping a coin which, for me, is a girl crush concept tinged with hiphop. Concept change or not, I do feel confident that Billlie will add their own creative "Billlie" flavor to tried and worn concepts, judging by the music they've released so far. On that note, Billlie will be having a single this mid-July in a collab with producer Yoon Jong Shin. Ksites are calling it a "summer" bop👀

i think starship only gives ive single comebacks bc they need ive to be the "perfect grp" without any filler tracks. they need songs that people will love wholly bc ive is just the likeable grp rn. i think starship is just afraid to take that step to put out a mini album in case that ive will lose that full likeability from the public by ppl trashing on their bsides etc. so they stay on the safe side and put out 2 great songs every time. this was so long but u get my point lol

I’ve been staning a lot of groups from Starship for a long time and my pov about IVE’s situation is that they were “testing” the public reception. With less songs you can creat curiosity and people will be so hyped for their first mini album. I personally think that releasing less songs it’s now a part of stragedy of most of the companies. SM did the same with aespa, for example. But I think in the next comeback we’re gonna have more songs for the girls, Starship’s artists always release a lot os music hahaha

I think what starship does with IVE is a correct stragedy. They have 2 bop songs which will give them popularity... similar to Blackpink. If they had a ton of songs - which most likely be medium -, it would be a bit disappointing... I don't stan them so that makes me look forward for more

My problem with rap in kpop isn't the existence of the rap itself, but that it's not even a real rap. They are often just talking/singing fast on a random fast beat. Like, even the vocal line can often do it with a bit of practice. Sometimes it's so bad I'm like just sing it girl lmao it won't change a thing. But I fully understand actual good rapping is not for everyone and not available for every company or it just the good rapper trainees didn't fit with the line up of the debuting group or some others reasons.

For IVE, it shouldn't be overlooked that they had a comeback only two months after their debut. I believe that they simply did a standard single album debut without any conspiracy strategy of any kind. And riding on their success and fame, they tried to comeback quickly and that coincidentally resulted in another single album. I don't think they are intentionally only making single albums, but those are just my thoughts!
