The Brits do an absolutely enormous amount of complaining about their public services... When it's not the trains it's the NHS or the BBC or any number of private and public services. But they are damn expensive in the UK, trains and busses etc. Imo the British rail network was rushed into private ownership. In Ireland ours is still a government owned service. And it's cheaper too... but we also moan about the lazy civil service attitude and money wastage etc.

In Britain, the Victorian and Edwardian railway system went pretty much everywhere, was affordable to everyone, comfortable, and opened up the Country to travel for everyone. You could leave London at 8am, be in Bristol by lunchtime, spend the afternoon taking drinks in one's Club, then catch the 5.30 home in time for Dinner at the Carlton. And still have change from a Guinea for a thru'penny upright with a Dolly Mop on the walk home through Whitechapel. Before the Railway, London to Bristol was three days of hard bumpy travel on a Stagecoach, just to get there.

My theory (idk if someone else already came up with this) is that the identity of a person changes everytime they learn. I think identity what choices a human would make. If you learn new stuff, then what you would do in a specific situation would change, compared to what you would've done before gaining the new information. so if clones of a persons mind would be created, they would all become different versions, since they'd experience things from different perspectives.

Here's the actual biggest problem: People love the idea of mind uploading because they imagine they get copied and wake up in a digital "body" and ready to live forever and experience true heaven or whatever if they want to. Problem is, that will never happen. You can make any number of digital copies of yourself, they all wake up and claim to be you (and they may have the property of consciousness), but there's absolutely no reason why your own consciousness that inhibits your actual body would "transfer over". Why would it?
@KatSpicert6 жыл бұрын
Well to even start with consciousness, where does it even come from? If its just a group of biological cells that develop some sort of consciousness, do we really lose our consciousness when we die? Do we soon get a new one?
@estebanlegare6 жыл бұрын
Yup EXACTLY that.
@RomanNumural96 жыл бұрын
Depends on whether or not you believe consciousness is intrinsic to the structure of the brain (and can be replicated digitally), or something else. If it is just a really clever connection of neurons and the neurons can be replicated on a computer, then copying the body and copying the consciousness would be the same thing.
@zolikoff6 жыл бұрын
@@RomanNumural9 No, that just means that the copy you made has the property of consciousness. Your own brain would keep its own consciousness as well. YOU as the subjective consciousness of yourself would remain in your own brain, no matter how you copied it. The only way around this would be to surgically attach your brain to another body.

Actually the London Underground is pretty good. And some tickets outside London are normal price. But sometimes going from one place to a nearby place is ten trillion pounds and there's no justification and because it's a monopoly (sorry I mean "franchise in which a specific part of the train network only has one company providing a service" - very different) there's no other route available to get to your destination and no buses can be bothered to do it either for some reason. But yeah it's definitely cheaper just to fly around everywhere if you're travelling good distances, and it's definitely cheaper for me to fly to Spain tomorrow than to get a train to London tomorrow from my house in Yorkshire, which is insane.

The fun thing about the idea of you being the same person by virtue of continuity of consciousness is how absurdly messy it gets. Oh, it's fine in general, but there's this tiny little problem called 'sleep' that interrupts consciousness periodically. From the perspective of an outside observer this won't matter, but from the perspective of the person themselves, they more or less skip over the period that they're asleep as if it didn't happen. When you think about copying someone this also raises some weird questions. Let's say you have a copying machine where there is a person on one bed, and a copy is made on a nearby bed. Outside observers should easily be able to work out which is the original and which is the copy. But, if you just left the original and copy alone, how would THEY work it out? Well, if the person that was copied was conscious during the process, that's easy; The copy will have a discontinuity in their memory; Somewhere along the line they arbitrarily move location for no apparent reason (from their own perspective. Obviously the reason is they didn't exist prior to this 'discontinuity' they have.) The original will not have such a discontinuity. All well and good, but now try the same scenario with the person that was copied having to be unconscious during the process. (Asleep, sedated, whatever) Now, without an outside observer or witness, BOTH the original and the copy have a discontinuity in their memory, because the last thing they remember is where they were just before they went unconscious. And since it's possible to be moved in your sleep, there's now nothing to distinguish what the two of them remember, and thus no way for them to logically resolve which is the 'original'. Of course, an outside observer could resolve it, but only if they watched the entire process from the moment the original was rendered unconscious to the moment both of them were awake again. That one tiny change in circumstances can make this so much more ambiguous is testament to how nebulous the whole concept actually is. And if you argue that a person exists only so long as they remain conscious, then it's possible to argue that nobody survives past falling asleep; The person that wakes up later on is an entirely new consciousness that shares the same memories, where all the previous iterations were different people entirely. It sounds weird, but it's about the same as the teleportation question in most regards. Imagine some people came in your sleep and moved you from one location to another without waking you up in the process. From your perspective this is indistinguishable from teleportation, so... How do you know you weren't killed, copied, and placed in this new location? It seems improbable, but you actually have no way to tell since you were asleep while it happened...
@DamonDraven5 жыл бұрын

what about dreams? you're usually at least somewhat conscious when you dream (assuming you are dreaming). if the person is cloned while they dream, the clone would probably have some kind of weird experience while theyre unconscious. question is what happens if you clone the person before they start dreaming.

Two major concerns in this video seem unfounded: 1: No one knows what consciousness is because it's isn't well defined, but if it is related to your thoughts, then the evidence would indicate overwhelmingly that it is a product of the neural activity in your brain. 2: We know for a fact that a human mind can be run in a space at least the size of the human brain for a relatively small amount of energy. So, large scale simulations of millions of people is almost certainly possible.
@peterwinkler88887 жыл бұрын
2: but we don't know if it's possible doing synthetically
@MichalStYTA6 жыл бұрын
You are totally right. I would add one more: 3. Conversely, it is not entirely clear if copy will be able to improve itself at all. You can make working copy without understanding how the mind works, and then any modification of it would be as beneficial as implanting some electrodes into biological brain. Granted, you might use backup copy when you break one, but there is no guarantee that you will notice that something is wrong.
@PapaBear_Gaming6 жыл бұрын
This is why we have AI building more AI already, and when they notice that there is an improvement in some area it notifies the researcher who checks if it is truly advantageous, if so he/she approves of the changes and the AI copies its current form and then makes a new one based on the improved model and runs its program again. Hopefully this will lead to some insane exponential growth in AI and learning algorithms.

@io67416 жыл бұрын
Well emulators are hard because that's a question of running software on hardware that wasn't originally built for that specific type of software. Obviously, we wouldn't use a gaming PC, but rather a special computer actually *designed* to hold a human mind.

If we are ever able to simulate a whole new world with living beings in it and run it at fast speeds, we could pretty safely say that we are in a simulation as well. I find it hard to believe though as such a machine would require almost infinite amount of memory unless you use procedural generation and "unload" areas that are not being observed... which would work kind of like quantum physics... wait.
