@@buffocto Intensify Action even makes you slower when swimming with Nautilus for some odd reason. It makes you submerge faster with different weapons, but you get punished with Nautilus. I say this as a fellow Nautilus player who has tested this and was really suprised about that because I like to equip one Secondary Ability of Intensify Action on most other builds.

@@Ballistic2770 this is gonna shock you (it shocked me) but naut actually does have jump rng. if you go into the training room and look very closely when you jump, the reticle gets a *tiny* bit wider. im not trolling you i promise, but the effect is only like 1% more rng so ia is definitely still bad on it lmao

This list changes DRASTICALLY in soloqueue, I mean, just ask yourself "okay but assume there is no tacticooler" and suddenly a lot of these shuffle around. Tacticooler is just that meta right now, basically all the fundamentals are being decided by it. Would be interesting to see a 'what if' list assuming cooler gets pushed out of the meta or at least has quick respawn removed from its buff list (I hope it does honestly)

Yeah this is why I take Procharas opinions with a grain of salt since I don't play on highly coordinated competitive teams. Solo queue is it's own meta. Wish people would make solo queue tier lists

@@PoorStargazer Solo q tier lists don't exist because they're almost entirely redundant. Literally anything can work. You can find clash blaster players who have played solo q in x rank since splatoon 2 and never struggled for a second. You can find people who are genuinely convinced that vunder is a top tier weapon because that's just what their solo q results tell them. You can find people who have played the most broken weapons in the series and just failed. There is a bar in splatoon. It is a bar that 99% of players are underneath, and that bar is the true value of any given build, between weapon, gear, and kit. Almost no players will ever reach that bar, and until you do, pretty much all weapons have a fairly equal playing field. Some edge cases like undercover with a trash kit, you might hit that bar, or gear abilities that hurt more than help, or subs in splat1 that didn't allow strafing. But in general, in soloq, you are playing against opponents who are nowhere near achieving the true value of their weapon, gear, etc. If everybody was doing that, a tier list would become much more important because the matchups would solely come down to weapons, gear and tactics, with mechanics taking a backseat. In competitive, most of those players aren't hitting the bar either but they're making up for it with their team play and coordination, which at its best will nullify the majority of your shortcomings and mistakes because you'll have teammates who cover for your weaknesses. At that point, everything is much more consistent, and so the weapons you're using, while still not 100% defining your odds of winning, are still important. This is why Starburst was so dominant in the western scene for so long. They WERE basically at the bar for their weapons, and had found the perfect comp and strategy to match that basically just let them steamroll no matter what. And then as soon as the meta shifted and other weapons and strategies came into focus, they became a bit less dominant (though still incredibly strong), because they now had to shift off the weapons they were at the peak of, so even if those weapons were now technically better, they were struggling more to use them and this new strategy, even able to use their old, weaker strategy to almost the same level as the best teams on the newer strategy were

8:36 I saw a Japanese player running tons of quick superjump so u could do a smart technique, they use qsj when respawning, they get down from the coffee machine and get the respawn armor then instantly jump in the front with the armor still active

@@Aego384 I asked and they replied to me with yes, I used like above 30 points to make sure I have no in between to test it out, sadly but it is way better than stealth jump bc is a free way to get in front and u survive regardless on what u do, etc chargers camping landing or if u r a dualie u can roll out very easily with the armor still active tried that with dapples

I love the customization that the gear abilities add to the game. Even if there is usually an objectively better ability to use, you can choose to run swim speed for extra mobility if you want, or you could run sun saver to throw more bombs. It can help to make weapon play styles more unique

@@gelato345The fun part is that, if you have enough quick super jump, you can have spawn armor when you land, which, when paired with the drop roller, makes you able to jump straight into danger and not die.

I gotta say, Opening gambit might have the biggest rise I've seen yet, from a joke pick to now a legitimate one especially in soloq, this is no longer an ability to underestimate/scoff at, now we have pay attention to it. As for tenacity, all the other head gear exclusive abilities have multiple effects whereas tenacity only has special charge up which is pretty underwhelming. I think there needs to be more than just faster specials like faster ink recovery, action intensify, ink resistance. In it's current state it's pretty much outclassed.

When they buffed mines in 2 to have the first one detonate instead of dissipate when placing a 3rd, I would sometimes screw around in turf by staxking a ton of sub power up to increase the blast radius and confuse people by remote detonating them and getting hits from BS distances.

I think Haunt has some serious consideration as a counterpick into stuff like Carbon Deco, because knowing where weapons like this are at all times is a pretty incredible advantage, and it's pretty common that it will trigger on your frontliner against these weapons. This could avoid situations where the entire team has to slow down their ability to push up the map simply because no one has located the Carbon yet.

The issue there is the Carbon Roller is a sharking weapon a lot of the time, and the thermal ink effect doesn't work on submerged players.

Tri Stringer is actually pretty good with Thermal Ink since you usually tag people with one or two arrows, but it struggles to finish opponents off. It's in the same camp as Blob imo. But other than those two main weapons, Thermal isn't very useful unless you suck at slaying and skirmishing lol.

I've been a tri stringer main for a long time now, almost since launch, and there was definitely a period of time when it was basically all I used. But it's definitely fallen out of favor now that it's clear that the only niche tri stringer can hope to have is a rainmaker niche where it's basically able to contest an entire team on shield pop at a safe range. This means you need object shredder and in turn the chest slot needs to be run speed. I guess helmet could be run speed and chest be thermal, but you're getting more use out of LDE or a main ability than thermal

I wish ink recovery was a bit better so you it could fill a niche of a space saver when you really want both sub and main saver and settle on just reducing the downtime from each instead. Like it should be the "less downtime" to the savers "more uptime"

Ability Doubler does have a valid (albeit very niche) use case that I think gets overlooked: If you want 6 AP of 3 different subs, and both find >6 AP of any one of them too much and your head/shoes slots are already in use, then Ability Doubler can be nice. You do lose 1 AP in your build, but something like 6 AP of Main Saver, Special Charge Up, and Ink Resistance on a shirt might actually be better for you than 10 AP of Main Saver, 6 AP of Special Charge Up, and 3 AP of Ink Resistance. Basically do you prefer 10/6/3 or 6/6/6 since 9/6/3 on a single slot isn't possible? 10/6/3 seems like the obvious choice, but keeping in mind diminishing returns makes that larger number gain less value per point than the smaller number, abilities with strong DR or specific breakpoints (like if you get an extra shot with 6 AP of ISM but do not gain yet another with 10 AP) could totally use 6/6/6 much better than 10/6/3. All of that said... It's on the Splatfest Tee so you can't really use it in S3 right now anyway so all of the above kinda doesn't matter, it's just fun to nerd out over. 😂

Yeah I used the replica splatfest tee at the end of Splatoon 2 and just slapped three utility subs onto it (Bomb Defense, Ink Resist, Quick Jump if I recall correctly). It added a bit of flexibility in my builds that I really appreciated. For Splatoon 3 I've been putting a utility sub on separate pieces of gear (QSJ on hats, Special Saver on shirts, Ink Resistance on shoes) and while I do get another main ability to play around with, it can be kind of difficult figuring out what to do with those remaining subs at times, since I intentionally try to make my gear sets modular so I can switch between them more easily (rather than curating specific builds for every weapon I like to play). At least it helps save ability chunks when I'm stacking abilities.

The current Tacticooler meta is really interesting for tier lists at the moment since it makes competitive tier lists and rankings a lot more distinct from solo queue. A lot of these abilities are a solid amount better or worse because of tacticooler, but since it's not guaranteed in solo, it actually makes for an interesting difference.

I still unironically use Thermal Ink when I play Big Swig Rollers. That things hitbox is hilariously pretty big enough that I get mileage for swiging away and then knowing where enemies are hiding so I can either pursue them or call them out. My go to, Comeback/Last-Ditch Effort, Thermal Ink, and Object Shredder build for Big Swig in Rainmaker matches is one of my favorites to use.

I've found that it falls off after a while, since the higher you get the less time people spend out of their ink. It worked wonders on Flounder and Wahoo when holding Mid. I've also come around to the idea that OS is redundant on Swig due to its innate multiplier. You might be better off investing in more mobility.

There is actually a niche reason to run ability doubler If you wanted to make a build where you run at most 6ap of any ability, you would have to compromise and run a sub more of one ability meaning less space for other abilities, ability doubler fixes this problem Example: Zap build Lde | rsu, rsu, qsj Ability doubler | scu, spu, ssu Stealth | inkres, special saver, intensify

Some abilities are really, really powerful but theyre tied to weaksauce mechanics, for example, one main of sub power up makes a point sensor last 15 seconds instead of 8, thats like 90% longer, which is a huge buff.... But who cares?

2:30 tacticooler doesn't actually negate respawn punisher effects, it still increases the time for enemies to respawn by 0.75 seconds and reduces their special gauge by 15%, it's just less noticeable because it doesn't also negate 85% of the quick respawn and 30% of the special saver when you kill coolered enemies, unlike if the opponents had those abilities on their gear without cooler effects

People forget that reefslider max spu is actually busted and is essentially a massive instant ink vac shot. It can can basically any zone in the game that isn't a 2 zone and will destroy anything near you. It also really reduces the amount of punishes you get for the special because most shooters die to it

If Ink Recovery Up had a bit more value in the stacking ability, it would definitely be somewhere around the middle of B tier (maybe higher B tier). Being able to recover ink quicker could be helpful if you want to quickly shift fights from one position to another in quick successions. It gives you more ink to work with compared to shifting fights normally. But even then, it's not the most impactful as it isn't necessary for certain weapons like Chargers and Splatlings.

Ninja squid can be used as good utility at lower ranks so you can't be tracked as easily, like say in a shooter fight and you switch angle, or to hide better from backlines. I die significantly more in a fight without it.

i mean, this was the same with ink armor in 2. you get a buff at the cost of your stealth. in 3, its even stronger because you can (usually) choose wether you want the buff or not. buffed ninja squid + cooler would be too hard to counter imo. you'd need to have some sort of "exposer" that helps locate and track them. point sensor, ink mines, missiles, wail and/or the two thermal ink abilities would become a necessity. now, in solo, you would be even more screwed because you cant communicate with your teammates about their location. so either you run smth that helps you see them, at the cost of a damaging sub and/or 10p of gear ability, or you join them. ...or you try your best with neither, but itll be really frustrating, i assume.

I think you underdid sub saver a bit. Some people's entire game-plans depend on disrupting the enemies with autobombs or torpedoes and merking them while they're distracted, and they'll have a fat stack of sub saver to ensure they can do so without much risk of running dry.

The base effect and curve on Sub Saver is really, really terrible compared to Main Saver. There are virtually no situations where the slot is better than Main Saver unless you are exclusively using your subweapon, and it's nerfed on bombs with lower costs (especially Burst Bomb) to the point where even Ink Recovery Up is better for the first sub. If you are exclusively using a subweapon (other than Splat Bomb or Suction Bomb for stalling objective, where you normally just run LDE, or Fizzy spam on Tri Nouveau to build special before going in), you are probably contributing very little to the game, as well. The only time Sub Saver is worth considering is when it lets you throw an extra bomb so you can overlap your white ink frames for much greater efficiency, e.g. LDE + 1 sub for double fizzy once the enemy team's score is at 30. When I say "really terrible compared to main saver" I mean stuff like "it's often around three mains of main saver that the next sub of main saver is less efficient than the first sub of sub saver in terms of actions per ink tank after one bomb". For N-Zap '89, for example, it's around 42 AP of main saver before the first sub of sub saver gives you more shots after a bomb than a sub of main saver. Suction Bomb and Splat Bomb weapons have more favorable curves, but it's still generally around 10 AP of main saver before sub saver gives them more shots.

generally you would run LDE for that. you have to wait until under 50 points but once that threshold is reached you get up to 6 subs each of all 3 ink efficiency abilities, all for the price of 1 main so you can still run other stuff like swim speed, charge up etc

Personally I think the best way to buff tenacity and thermal is pretty simple Tenacity should reward the player for surviving so it should reward the user with 1 subs of all ink savers, sub/ink resistance every 15 seconds which could stack up to a max of 3 times along with keeping the special gain effect For thermal personally they should just combine it with haunt to make it an easy pick for more weapons, to be honest they should just make all forms of damage mostly indirect forms of damage (blasters, stringer explosion and maybe subs) Again these are just my thoughts of how I could buff weaker abilities while also making them more fun to use

I think thermal ink should activate on all main weapon attacks but have a short duration since it would be unfair to carpet bomb with bow while always knowing where the enemy is. Tenacity should add 2 subs of both movement speeds, intensify action, both ink savers, and ink refill. This would essentially make the last player a powerful glass cannon until their team respawns. Because of how easy it is to die, this would be fairly balanced as a 2v1 is still stacked against you. Ability doubler should be increased to ability trippler. This would make everything more hectic, allowing you to have almost 2 extra main abilities.

Tactocooler doesnt negate respawn punisher, in fact they still lose 15% more of their special charge, and take 0.75 seconds longer to respaw, which is the same as what it does whithout cooler.

Hot Take: Quick Respawn and Tenacity should activate like Last Ditch Effort in ranked matches. Tenacity: 30+ points behind the enemy team, regardless of the difference of players between teams. Quick Respawn: 50% effectiveness if your team is 20-39 points behind enemy team, if you splat a player or fall off the map, and 100% if your team is 40+ points behind, even if you splat an enemy player or fall off the map..

I’m gonna be honest: Main Save and Ink Recov. Are a perfect combo for me. I find that Abilities only stack to 20. (I don’t understand why people use full 12 slot of any ability) so running double Main save + Ink recovery is a nice fit for the ink hungries, such as Blasters or stampers.

It’s important to note that all of this is Chara’s opinion, and this is just from his experience. All of the abilities have their own strengths, and that doesn’t mean you can’t use something just because he listed as F tier. You may find it useful to yourself, and that’s all that matters. Everyone has their own playstyle, so use the abilities that you find the most helpful. Chara would just like to point out the flaws and strengths of each individual one, and just rank them based on his experience. Don’t take his opinion too seriously.

It would be kinda cool, but also probably a bit too powerful, if Ink recovery gave a slight decrease to certain weapon’s waiting frames. It would probably be a pain to balance correctly, and it would probably have to be a clothing exclusive ability to not be extremely overpowered, but ink recovery needs all the help it can get

Haunt is AMAZING imo. You can see people to prevent them from camping you (once they have already killed you, to make them THINK you're weak and easy to camp but you're not so now you have the element of surprise) and that's one of the most annoying things in the game!

sadly it wont help with camping where theyre sitting in the ink. as a pink dapple main, rollers sitting behind ledges (think brinewater spawn) are the worst, i cant get close without dying but cant use sub or special either. often enough, i know theyre there too, but cant approach at all :') still, i really enjoy haunt. it does help with noticing sneaky enemies, especially in lower levels where "shoot-swim-shoot-swim" strats are rather uncommon.

camping really isn't an issue in this game though. Just go google squid school camping to find out why, but seriously, there are just so many reasons why if the enemy is spawn camping, that's either hurting them more than you, or an issue with turf war so just go play a real mode

In understanding the diminishing returns of stats I've taken to stacking some Ink Saver X and Ink Recovery together as opposed to all in Ink Saver X, but only crunching the numbers will actually tell if that's effective or not. I wonder if the same sort of dual stacking works well with some specials regarding Special Charge Up and Special Power Up where the SPU would directly affect the special's time out. Something like Kraken or Inkjet. I wish Ink Recovery Up was better, I really do. If it cut down on whiting frames it would be amazing. When next to Ink Saver Main or Sub Saver Main those savers always get chosen over recovery up. I wish I could say Recovery Up would be better if you favor both your main and sub, but even that's not always better, because Sub Saver Main cuts on the required ink to fire a special it becomes more useful in a firefight more often and allows you more statistical opprotunities to substrafe.

i don't think thermal is too bad, i think it's in the wrong meta. i personally really like using thermal ink on painbrush. if painbrush was a stronger weapon i def think thermal would have a niche

I miss damage up 😒💔 STEALTH JUMP SUCKS NOW 🤬😡 Haunt used to use echolocater on the person who splatted you. 😎 Stealth swim used to hide your swimming no matter what and I miss that. 🥺 (Although it slowed your swim speed (so did the jump,))

I think Sub Resistance Up is still one of the better utility subs. One sub has always been good and two subs is great against tracking subs. Now that Splattershot is meta, I think it's worth consideration more than ever. Usually Splattershot can combo with Suction Bomb's non-lethal radius for a two shot kill, but with two subs of Sub Res you can just barely survive that combo with 0.9HP left. Being able to take one extra shot before dying could prove to be immensely valuable.

zooka can kill liters often and cooler lets opponents force you back way faster, and even if you kill them with rp its cancelled out by cooler. rp just dosent work right now

Controversial take: I think Stealth Jump should be nerfed, not by much but I think the range you can begin to see the marker should be SLIGHTLY further. But by much, maybe at max an extra half a line of range, plus keep the distance you need to be to fully see it be roughly the same, so it just fades in from slightly further away. The reason I say this is that I do like SJ being good, it just might need a little something considering how dominant it is on nearly every weapon.

I think youre misreading it. Its not that its SOOOO GOOD its dominant in all the competitive players kits, its that is simply functionally one of the better options for high competitive play. Its not overpowered it just provides a mechanic thats more appealing to high level play than other maintenance or assist abilities will. Casual play sees a lot less of it.

@@MysteriousStranger50Casual play should see a lot more of it, just players are generally pretty clueless (hence why you see so many people wearing pures and no utility subs). It is absolutely the #1 ability in casual play. It is not even close. Not revealing your teammates by jumping to them, not getting killed by chargers or bombs instantly on landing, being able to actually sustain a push with continued jumps in because you can jump much closer to the front lines... all of this makes it a gamechanging ability.

I do wish IA had unique effects for weapons unaffected by jump rng because I really like the speed it gives. Cant make air charging faster for chargers though because squiffer becomes op (squiffer main)

although literally no one has an issue with it, i still dislike how recovery and last ditch effort (and to some extent opening gambit) is preferred infinitely more than any other main on the headgear ability slot. neither do i like how each subsequent AP added of the same ability in your built will have less of an effect after the other. it forces you to use a (pardon) shit-ton of diversity instead of what's powerful for your weapon or game plan or team comp, leaving you without an identity but instead an abomination miss-match mush pit that gives you a ton of "miniature" (

I think a buff for gambit is to put it on shoes, and put object shredder on hats. So you could run LDE and OG on the same build

Nah, shoes slots by far the hardest to give up because that is where Stealth Jump goes. I think that makes it overall weaker of an ability. A shirt ability would be interesting, though, since shirt slot is generally pretty open for weapons that don't need Ninja Squid.

5:31 Man the fact that Thermal Ink doesnt work with the Tri-Stringer splash damage is soooo annoying to me, as it is to all the other AOE weapons that could benefit from it. I think if it worked for Tri-Stringer's AOE, it would be a guaranteed ability on ANY Tri-Stringer build.

Honestly I'm not so sure it would be as a tri stringer main of over a year. It's decent for stringer, but considering how indispensable object shredder is for stringer, plus how good having a helm exclusive ability like LDE is, it's pretty important to keep that chest slot open for run speed, swim speed, ink recovery, or another main. I've been thinking a LOT about builds for the weapon and I think that thermal has a place for some niche situations, mainly inkblot zones, but overall it's just not useful enough in most situations to justify over the alternatives when there are already so many good main exclusives that tri stringer prefers and it really needs as many free main and sub slots as possible for utility, movement, and ink management

I actually find that I haven't gotten a lot of value out of LDE; I don't usually run low on ink, and I don't care much about spamming either Toxic Mist or Sprinkler. I do like Object Shredder, but only on Rainmaker when I know it'll get value. Overall my builds don't rely on main-exclusive abilities much, so I'm free to use my slots for mobility. I wouldn't mind putting on Thermal Ink, especially if it applied to the splash damage. One of the main things I like about Tri-Stringer is the ability to reliably apply pressure over walls and around cover, and Thermal Ink would be amazing for that kinda stuff. I think with all the other scouting utilities it would be amazing if it was easier to trigger.

I would run Ability Doubler if I could just so that I could divide the main ability's AP between ink saver (main), ink saver (sub), and ink recovery. I'd gladly take the 1 AP loss for such an even split! The only problem for me is that it's tied to the splatfest tee... I wish there was an option to change any shirt's main ability to Ability Doubler

In this particular example, 10 AP main saver, 3 AP IRU, and another ability for the other two subs is better for virtually every weapon in the game. Or you could do 6 AP main saver 3 AP IRU and have a free main slot. There are situations where Ability Doubler is useful, but they mostly involve movespeed abilities. The ink efficiency abilities are absolutely not built evenly like you're suggesting.

I play turf war mainly with the Splattershot Jr, and the three abilities I mentioned really help. Why not just run LDE with a sub of each on it then? You get a sub of each which already does way more for the room it takes up on gear than the 19 AP that ability doubler plus 3 subs does (with exponential curving, a sub is gonna get you the most value anyways). Plus, that means that when LDE triggers, you can throw two splat bombs. LDE is literally never bad, if you're losing you get it and if you're winning you don't need it. These three abilities aren't created equal, ink saver sub has a much harsher curving than the other two so two subs is worth a lot less than two subs of main saver, and the jump from 0 to 1 sub is a lot bigger than the jump from 1 to 2. LDE gives 6 SUBS (not 6AP, 6 SUBS so 18 AP of all 3, for a single main ability, and you can still put more subs on it
