Instant credit for pronouncing Willys correctly. Even Chrysler gave up correcting people and said it’s just easier to pronounce it wrong.

Yes, I know many people who work at the Jeep factory even say it wrong. But, I feel showing some small respect to the man who founded the company is important.

I just wanted to get it right. Stands to reason if "Overland Motor Company" was purchased by John Willys, the new company name of "Willys-Overland" should be pronounced like his name.

Fantastic video! I just purchased the same Jeep but with the soft top and in black and agree with everything you said about the Willys. Very basic, fun, and rugged but with a decent ride and great fuel mileage (23-24 city and 25-26 hwy). I originally wanted the more deluxe version but ended up with the base Willys with the E-Torque V6, automatic and trailering package as my only options and am glad I picked the basic one. Your review is the best I have seen and I learned things about my Jeep that I had not known and that helped a lot. Keep up the great videos!

I love your video, I have been building a lot of us military models in my childhood and I am fantasized in owning a military jeep one day. As I entered into my retirement age, I finally decided to own my dream car, I purchased a Willys 2 door sarge green 3.6L V6 in 2023 and ended up in having a 2024 model. Well, happy birthday, Lydia! I'm happy for you finally getting your first Jeep! It's so cool that you drove a real Army Jeep too. As for the tips on getting in the back seat, when I first posted this video, some dude wrote a comment saying it was stupid to teach that, and "are people so stupid they can't figure out how to get into a vehicle?" I told him, it's a lot harder than it looks, and even channels much more popular than mine have provided tips on the easiest way to get in. He deleted his comment shortly after. He said he had ordered a 2-door Jeep. I bet he struggled to get in the back seat and realized he shouldn't have been so judgmental!

Thank you for your thorough and unique review of the Jeep brand and the Willys trim! I enjoyed your brief documentary of military stencils; it helped me better appreciate your custom badging honoring your grandfather’s contribution as a WWII veteran 🙇🏾‍♂️. There is a lot of hype, but not much information on the Jeep website, and reviews like yours help potential buyers like me to discern subtle differences between the trim levels. Not everyone wants a mall/rock crawling toy. Like you, I am looking for a capable 4WD high clearance vehicle for exploring backroads. Best wishes!

Thank you for such a thoughtful and kind comment. When I make videos like this, I try to include information I am unable to find in other videos. As I was researching my Jeep, there was a lot of information I was curious about, but couldn't find. For example, I was curious about the skidplates, but no one ever shows the underside of a vehicle. No one explains where different engines are built. No one ever measures the cargo area and provides those numbers. Certainly, I'm not the only person who cares about these details, so, I really wanted to make a video which covered a lot of those types of topics. I'm glad you enjoyed it and found it useful.

Especially thank you for the background on World War II: the stars and the serial number. I just might follow you and use my grandfathers number for my vehicle. Nice tip on the hitch for the bike rack. No need to get a full towing package for a bike rack. Now I’m trying to figure out how to mount some thing on the roof for my kayaks.

Thank you very much. Jeep owners can be very picky, so I'm flattered to have such a nice compliment from a long-time owner. As for pronouncing "Willys", a journalist named Homer Brickey published an article on February 2, 2002 in the Toledo Blade newspaper, saying John North Willys pronounced his surname as "Will-is" and not "Will-eze". Even if every grunt in the entire Jeep factory pronounces it wrong, I'd rather say his name properly.

Excellent review of the Willys. I have a 2016 Willys Wheeler Sport with the manual door locks and windows like yours. I had to add after market grab handles and some other upgrades to make it better for camping. I loved the history of the Jeep and that you finally put to rest the pronunciation of "Willys." Thankfully I do not have to deal with push button start and auto stop/start. As to storage, my rear passenger seat was only in the vehicle for the first 24 hours after purchase. I needed space for my camping gear and I usually travel alone or with one passenger. My only regret is that it is impossible to sleep in the 2 door wrangler without being in an extreme fetal position and awakening with pains in the neck and back. I should have purchased the 4-door version. Other than that, my Jeep is still going strong, with almost no mechanical problems for the past 7 years. Must have been made on a Wednesday. Thanks, and look forward to more of your videos.
@LuthorvilleCA
@LuthorvilleCA 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Yes, I'm confident the pronunciation is correct because "Willys" was the name of the owner of the company, and I know that surname is pronounced like Bruce Willis, not "Will-Eaze". When you are camping alone, have you ever thought about removing the passenger seat? That might give you more room to stretch out, although I've never removed mine, so I'm not sure how difficult it would be.

The tailgate does not fully open when I have my bike rack in place. However, it comes VERY close. If I had about a 2" drop-hitch, I think it would clear the gate. I especially appreciated the Jeep history, storage measurements (I've not seen elsewhere, but about which I `was wondering) and sound demonstrations (about which I, also, wondered). You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it. 2 or 4 door? Depends on your needs. If you have the need to carry a lot of gear or equipment for a job or hobby, or if you have a family and kids, get the 4-door. If you are single, and don't need to transport a lot of physical items, get the 2-door. Thanks for watching!

I agree with everyone. Fantastic review. I have a 2016 Willys two door and had an '01 2 door before that I drove for 15 years. Just like you the love started early in life. Whats funny is I grew up in Ohio on a street that looked very much like your childhood one. The Willys is an excellent package and you did a great job explaining it. Some say its just some stickers, but you get much more. I offroad all the time and the 2 door is amazingly agile. I have taken the back seat out and I sleep in mine when I am on the trail. Congratulations on your purchase. What you did to it looks great and clearly you love it. Maybe we will meet on the trails some day. I am in Ca. too.

Well, I may be mistaken, but I think some of the past versions of the Willys Edition were just appearance packages. I believe they started to add actual performance upgrades to the Willys in the last year or two. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Awesome video! How did you remove the Wrangler and Willys decals? Did they simply peel off or was there something else you needed to do?
@LuthorvilleCA
@LuthorvilleCA 2 жыл бұрын
The "WILLYS" actually just peeled off. The vinyl was very thick and easy to remove with a fingernail. The "WRANGLER" was a lot more difficult. I used a hair-dryer to heat the glue and an expired credit-card as a scraper. Some people use heatguns, but those get too hot and you risk damaging the paint. To remove the glue reside, you can apply any type of cooking oil (olive, almond, coconut, whatever) and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, then scrape off the glue.

I got my 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys finally. :) I thought about putting a hood locking latch on mine but so far the locks on those locking latches are so easy to pick. Any key that can fit in can practically unlock it. All you gotta do is hit the pin at the top by moving the key around a little and it unlocks. I had to return them back to Amazon. Do you have a locking latch on yours? If so, is your lock hard to pick?
@LuthorvilleCA
@LuthorvilleCA Жыл бұрын
I have locks. I don't worry about them being picked. Anyone can break any lock if they want to badly enough. These are all "theft-deterrents" not "theft-proof" modifications.

Great video. Love your take on owning a Jeep. I think Jeep corrected the Wrangler steering problem in the 2021 models by replacing the old aluminum steering box with a new steel steering box.
@LuthorvilleCA
@LuthorvilleCA 2 жыл бұрын
I think you may be correct. Clearly Jeep must have done SOMETHING because I have experienced zero steering issues. I haven't been able to find any information on what was changed/improved, but your explanation may be correct. I did see a video which said they beefed up the steering knuckles on the Mojave, so maybe they did it across the lineup. Thanks for watching!

Great video. In regards to the shifter -+. I prefer it, reminds of of racing, speed, and flight. When you accelerate, you are pulled back, might be easier to pull back the shifter. Or when you are on an incline, to slow down, it will be easier to push. On an airplane when you want to go up, you pull back, incline push forward. Lol my longest comment. Thanks for making this.

I'm thinking of getting a Jeep Wrangler Willys Sport Unlimited in the near future. Anything I should be aware of up front? I've only ever driven lower trim 2wd pickup trucks, but I'm so drawn to Jeeps and figure it would be nice to still have something utilitarian and versatile that can do some light off roading that's easier to live than a full size truck. thank you!

The only thing I would say, if you've never owned a 4x4 vehicle, is to obey the instruction manual for shifting into 4x4 LOW. In other words, have your transmission in neutral and shift the transfer case while rolling at about 2 or 3MPH. If you get up to 5 or 6MPH, that's way too fast. You should BARELY be moving when you shift into 4x4 LOW. Other than that, there's not much special to know beforehand. Have fun with your Jeep when you get it!
