I’ve been decluttering and “minimize” my house for a bit now. Then we had a fire in end of April. While there was more save-able items I realized how much more I can cut out of my house. I left my decor items boxed up until the air ducts were clean which took longer due to covid. While my house was to bear for me. I haven’t even put all of the items back out. I’m enjoying the minimal but still beautiful decor rooms.

I love hearing this community start talking about consumption and unfair labor practices. Good on you. I know it's a hard line to balance considering this whole thing is based around consumption but I appreciate you doing it. I actually find that reviews and channels like this help me keep my consumption down because then I get to decide on a product before making regrettable purchases.

In order to "accessorize" my phone case when the paint started to come off, I painted it with nail polish. A preetty base color and glitter. It's been holding on well for the past months, makes me happy to look at and saved me from buying another one. Lately, one of my mail approaches to wanting something is asking myself if I can DIY it. It's been working pretty well. I made myself a lipstick organizer, an earring book, a dry brush cleaner (like a vera mona color switch) and my phone case

I had to cut back on notebook purchases as well. I was building up quite a collection of MUJI notepads since we have a store in downtown Portland. Since the beginning of COVID-19 in this area, and now the protests, federal police, etc, I haven't been there since early March though I only live 2 miles away. I've been using up what I have at home and it feels so much better than constantly buying new ones.

Yes to every single one of these. My mother always taught me to keep just a little “mad money” in the budget ($5-10/week) just for little splurges .... but where she would stash hers for a couple of months before springing on something nice, I nearly always ended up blowing through mine every week or two. Knowing what I really love *in my space*, not just theoretically (it’s cute, it’s new, it’s an elephant 😆) and choosing only to snag deals when it suits that profile has helped enormously - but alas, I’m still a recovering Impulse Buyer™️ 🤦🏼♀️

I stopped makeup subscription boxes and I'm super happy about it! Haven't had one in about 6 months. And I don't miss it at all. I do still have ipsy small glam bag because that was a year long sub, but it has a way smaller impact on my collection than boxycharm. Looking back there isn't much that I still have or really care for from those boxes. Wish I had just spent the money on a few products I really really wanted.

@guitargirl97144 жыл бұрын
You’re so right about subscription boxes! I broke down last year, and after a ton of research decided to do Ipsy. I chose them because it was inexpensive and got fairly good reviews. I foolishly went “all in” and ordered the year subscription because you get 12 months for the price of 10. I just have a couple months to go and I’m cancelling it so it doesn’t renew automatically. I have a ziplock bag of cute little samples that will probably expire before I can use them all. I’ve discovered a few things I really enjoy, but overall it feels very wasteful to me. There’s no way I can make it through all 5 products before the next months bag comes. That being said, I do wear minimal makeup and have very sensitive skin so I have to be careful what skincare I use. And I can’t even think about the cumulative waste generated by hundreds of subscription boxes bought by hundreds of thousands of people. Anyway to each his own, nobody needs to come at me if they enjoy subscription boxes and use up their products (yes we live in a world now where that disclaimer is necessary 🙄). I digress. Point is, the subscription box itch has been scratched for me, and I’ll Never. Get. One. Again.

The only subscription box I see myself buying is from Ipsy because it’s so cheap compared to most others. I also haven’t followed fashion trends in YEARS. Does not interest me. The only subscription boxes I get are for books which is my other big hobby outside of beauty, and I like getting physical books for a deal and for me I am paying for the reading experience so I don't mind if the book doesn't end up being a keeper on my shelf after reading it. I can always pass them on to my mom or a friend which to me makes it more worth my dollar. Plus I use my library a lot, so getting the sub box is a nice treat to myself. Same I also never buy trendy jewelry. My sensitive skin prefers only real silver and gold anyways so that's where my investment goes. You've mentioned Ana Luisa and I really love Xio for more affordable real pieces. I have never had a cute phone case lol mostly because I drop the crap outta my phone, so I always go for a black protective case. And I have a lot of notebooks. I do journal, but fast enough to go through these. To be fair, I don't buy new ones I get them as gifts because people know I journal, but I also have some half used ones from grad school still (I graduated last year) that I need to use somehow.

Interestingly enough, I got an incredibly helpful tip from (of all things) a fashion magazine: if you like a certain trend, buy one item that fits it. Get one pair of tassel earrings for instance and if you wear them to death, THAT'S when you think about getting more. That is a weird rule I've always tried to follow. I will never be able to convince myself not to have a huge stack of notebooks and journals though. So I'm with you there.

I'm like yep, yep, yep, yep, agree, yep. The trends now were the trends when I was in high school and college. The one thing I do to supplement my wardrobe (and this is only because of my job, I pause it whenever we are in lockdown, which it looks like we are going back into next week) is I use a rental service. I rent either tops or dresses and use it with my capsule basic wardrobe. I have, in the 8 months (minus 2 months for quarantine) purchased one dress (it's black and simple and was used). And its literally only because of the expectations about how professional women dress. I am a HUGE thrift and consignment shopper. I used to resell my clothes as well, but we have a really, really wonderful non-profit that provides them to women who are looking for jobs. And I have actually stopped buying jewelry entirely. If its something I want, I have to want it enough to ask my wife for it as a present, which works out super well. Otherwise I make jewelry as a chill creative past time some weekends. I'm not brilliant at it, but I can make some earrings or string some beads, which has kind of turned into a way of giving little gifts that my friends actually like. And with home stuff, I either buy it used, or make my wife go with me (and she hates shopping). The only thing I will say is beware the garage sale addiction (this isn't a thing right now), but we used to go ALL the time and now I have a garage full of things for garage sales. But for clothes, accessories, BOOKS, and some homewares, I think its brilliant. And I REALLY try not to buy new cotton anything except denim (even then, usually used), because the amount of pesticides in the Gulf from growing cotton is horrifying. It is this giant, giant dead zone.. I will occasionally buy a concert or influencer merch shirt if I know it is something that I will wear to rags (and then use as rags, and then use in my garden), but I try to go with something like a mug instead. Coffee mugs or tumblers are my "commemorative" item of choice, because we use the heck out of them (Jessica Braun vibes here too) and they are also things I use for storage all over my house and office. LOVE this video Kelly!

Goodness I agree with so many of these! 1. I feel like sub boxes so add up in terms of products.I agree with you! 2. For clothes I would rather have 1 nice and expensive thing than 10 cheaper things. I prefer classic things compared to trends,which I dont pay attention to. This is also true for me for everything like jewlery. I don't buy cheap Forever 21 jewlery anymore.I want more quality pieces from Kendra Scott or Pandora. 3. other things I dont buy: cotton pads,sponges, batteries. All of these have sustainable options I buy instead.

Relate to a lot of these. I’ve never purchased subscription boxes so not a problem there. For trendy items I found it easier not to fall into the trap of just purchasing them when I figured out my style and what suits me (I expect it to change over time but I’ll deal with it then). I only try the trends works with my style. I also love thrift shopping for clothes but it’s a struggle to get the fit right because oversized clothes don’t work for my body shape.

So true! I've been subscribed to Birchbox for a about a year(I don't think we have Boxycharm here in UK) and accumulated so much stuff I would't buy myself(literally like 99,9% of everything I received in those boxes), so even for just £10 a month it still doesn't make sense! And it's mostly not about the money, but the amount of clutter which comes to your life before you notice that. A big no no for me! 😝

I have so many empty blue moleskine notebooks, it’s embarrassing! I’ve also had to quit buying them. I can’t even fathom how long it will take to fill them up!
