That’s when I first bought it was for the R7. Great investment!

I started looking at the Tascam once I found out that the R5 II was going to have the digital hot shoe and 4-channel audio. I backed away at the time because there were many reviews talking about the device dying after a relatively short period of time - less than 1 year. I'd appreciate it if you could to do a long-term follow-up for us to let us know how the device is holding-up for you. I really only need some of the functionality it provides when I should in the same location as my channel partner, especially if we have a live guest, but it would be good to have. It would also be nice to not have the cables for audio out the side blocking some of the view to the screen. Cheers!

The one I unboxed in this video is my second copy. I have owned it since the release of the Canon R7 2.5yrs ago. Every video you see me in doors either at my desk or lower studio is using that on my R7, R6 II or as of lately R5 II. It hasn't failed on me or died on me. I should have emphasized that this is a long term review. I had an initial one 2yrs ago where I unboxed it and through out a few videos following I talked about it. I do highly recommend it and it hasn't failed me. I bought it when it was $400 and it has gone down quite a bit since then. Totally worth it. Here is old Jared talking about it in this initial unboxing two years ago. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sF7VkKNvib2BndU

Hope we will see an upgrade soon for a 32bits version and much compact with handle compatibility like Panasonic. For now I prefer to use a Zoom F3 with timecode sync.

32 bit float is nice. I have the tascam portacapture and it’s great but the smaller model they just released makes more sense for run and gun.

I just replied to @dadstalktech in the comments, but to sum it up I have owned it for the last 2.5yrs and it has never died on me or failed. I have used it since purchase on all my indoor shoots starting with my R7 then R6II and now R5II. I now have it mounted on my R7 and R5II in studio. That's how much I love it!

@@JaredHoyman Great! Thank you...that's very useful information. Though I am critical of canon's design with all the tiny fragile connectors, makes me wonder as I see many of my colleagues pretty rough on gear that it may not be the most robust system hence leading to some of the problems people experienced. I have to say Panasonic leads the pack here as their connections to their XLR module are very durably designed. So I will likely pick one up and maybe get the warranty extension on it just in case.

@@whiterock1865I’m not typically someone who used the hotshoe cover but for this reason and for the fact the r5 II hotshoe cover is weatherproof I use whenever I don’t have a flash or the tascam on it. I loved my gh5 and always tempted to either pickup a gh7 or one of Panasonics full frame for a studio cam.

The problems reported were most likely caused by the user forgetting to turn off phantom power when disconnecting the mic cord. If you can remember to NOT do that, you should be good.
@JaredHoyman3 ай бұрын
@@audioactiveadvertising3844 Thats good advice and I may be guilty of that as well, but luckily I never had a unit break. I typically turn off the camera which then turns off the tascam before I unplug any xlr devices.

Jared, I enjoy your videos and presentation style - lol. Wondering when using the Tascam which mic or mics do you often use, and what length XLR cable is best. Thanks.
@JaredHoyman3 ай бұрын
Thank you! At my desk I'm using the SHURE SM7B and my xlr cable is about 10-15ft I believe. I don't know if that is practical, but I use these cables on location where I need length and typically I'm using the Sennheiser MKH416. The 416 is a great MIC, but if I could purchase all over again I would probably be better off with the MKH50 for indoor shoots. It's more expensive, but is better at rejecting ambient noise and reverb. I used to own the rode ntg1 and like it, but I think there are better RODE mics out there and a lot less expensive than Sennheiser.
@markexploringnewstuff3 ай бұрын
@@JaredHoymanthank you. So it’s fair to say you’re not mounting your mic in the Tascam mic holder, rather you’re using the XLR to use the mic off camera.

Does this work on the R5?
@JaredHoyman2 күн бұрын
The r5 doesn’t have a digital hotshoe for direct digital connection but you can connect it via mic port and have it run on battery. R5c, r6 II and newer do have the digital hotshoe.
@EliVazquezSifuentes3 ай бұрын
So this also works with the R6 mark ii?
@JaredHoyman3 ай бұрын
Yes. If you have xlr mics this definitely makes your r6 II more of a cinema camera now with full size xlr.

Hi Jared, sorry for posting this here as it is about the R7 and not the R5 ii. I just wondered if you or others that watch your channel have noticed the Canon R7 becoming noisier in the physical sounds that are coming from the body when powered with a lens on after updating the firmware to 1.6 ? The noise is there all the time but varies in volume, tone and level. I have tried with non-IS/OS lenses and with the IBIS both on and off and this varying sound is still eminating from the body. Again sorry for posting here.

Hi, I have read very negative reviews, that it does not work after a few uses. Is it a construction or an operational problem? I would like your opinion on this matter. And what STEREO microphone do you recommend for this device? thank you very much!

I’ve been using the xlr2d for the last 2yrs and both are working great. I use them all the time. I don’t have a stereo mic. I use the sennheiser mkh416 as my xlr shotgun mic. Rode makes excellent xlr mics too. This is the one I use but it’s not for everyone amzn.to/4iZAuYj

It's a shame that there is no other brand that uses this smart plug to sell microphones, because Tascam is really very expensive, a big flop
@JaredHoyman3 ай бұрын
I was hoping canon would partner with more characters monies on the digital hotshoe. It might be because they partnered with tascam and closed it off for other audio companies. The price did drop quite a bit. I paid $400 when it first came out and now you can buy it brand new for around $275, which is actually a good deal.
