The "right" to happiness vs. the right to *pursue* happiness is an excellent point, well worth thinking about. The pursuit is more important than is generally assumed today. 👍

Do you agree with his statement that Nietzsche's ideas and the will to power were very damaging to Western society? I think the opposite is true. Nietzsche hated nihilism. Thats what he was battling against. He affirmed life and told people to embrace their natural inner drives impulses and desires rather than running away from them. He said life is often a struggle but that we can find meaning and purpose in rhe struggle thereby justifying human suffering and redeeming ourselves.

Excellent interview. The author is very successful illuminating very complex cultural trends impacting the whole of western societies. His insights toward the latter part of the interview are both encouraging and to some degree mournful at the same time; but I think more optimistic, hopeful, and comforting. Thanks for putting a spotlight on this well spoken messenger of hope in a world in need of encouragement.

Happiness to me comes from within. One’s character. I think the more individual integrity one has nothing to be ashamed of. No monkeys on one’s back to weigh down. External happiness is all a temporary present state. Delayed gratification comes from self disciplinary behaviors. I want this, have to do that before one can obtain it.

Some of the topics can feel like very ‘deep water’ at the time of listening, but I take notes as I go to help me reflect upon the content later. I’m also greatly encouraged because I know that these podcasts are contributing to my overall education in matters that I would sometimes find much too complex to think upon. “Behave with moderation and politeness and behave as civilised as we can”- Carl Trueman. This is very hard for most people when they are presented with an idea that conflicts with their beliefs. It’s too difficult for most people to muster the emotional intelligence to listen and process, and potentially adjust their view. Ideally most people choose to read a wide range of books (like the book discussed in this video). The number of people willing to do that is vanishingly small. With an ill informed electorate, the people’s chosen representatives can only reflect their level of education.

A great seminar to say the least. Concerning to hear we may be past a tipping point and we may well have entered a long period of social strife in the western world. Without unity of purpose and belief in a society built on democratic principles of liberty we become weakened to external forces the likes of fundamental Islam and the CCP. Genius, brave these days to voice these ideas. Like many I suspect, these themes have floated half baked in my head as one observes the nonsense one sees over the years in this American society. A cure? None, unfortunately. I stay away from as much of contemporary culture as possible. Live a quiet life in my 70's. My time is short. I have yet to hear a debate anywhere about some of the fundamental psychological elements of our species that could be driving the directions we humans have taken throughout most of our history and that lead us to today? For example: the human ego, selfishness & greed may well have had beneficial effects for us in the very early times of hunter gathering, all 3 acting as facets of self protection. However, once we settled and produced towns, cities and national boundaries etc the blueprint of life until this day became peoples largely controlled by individuals and/or families which set up the standards of life we still see today....the multitude controlled and kept poor relative to the those atop the wealth & power social pyramids. With this in place, greed & selfishness became the standard driving forces of all societies right up to today! So, is our problem innate in our species?

Humility is good - but it sounded like John's comments at the end (about political channels) was perhaps a dig at the ACL - there is a role for political channels, as without that, even if the culture was predominantly Christian, they would have no influence on it at a political level, and as much as local action is important, we can see that political actions and policies profoundly influence what happens on the local level eg: what is taught in schools. If we use Christ as the example - He acted on the local level, but was quite happy to point out the flaws of the political power of the time - the Pharisees.

It's a very good and thoughtful book. Truman misses the origin of individualism and "my truth" is also caused by Protestantism. Protestantism leads to atheism as it deteriorates into private truth based on private interpretation that leads to an idea that my truth is something I create.

I would contest Prof Trueman’s point about Charles Darwin …. Darwin never postulated that natural selection was completely random in humans; he has a whole book on sexual selection. The theory of evolution is actually, in my opinion, the strongest case for the existence of the metaphysical (“God”) as we have sensed the presence of something “divine” in each other (women in men mainly as women do the selecting) and selected for that…. The men that most reflect the moral / ethical framework which is another fancy way of saying “God” (which is not arbitrary as it has been purposefully selected for) are the most successful (both personally in society and hence reproductively). It’s Darwin’s theory that has led me to ultimately believe there is “a God”

The Gospel: Plain and Simple “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” - 2 Corithians 11:3 Ask someone today if they are saved and you will most likely hear responses like these: “I have accepted Jesus into my heart.” Or “I have made him Lord of my life.” “I’ve been baptized.” “I said a prayer.” Sounds all good and churchy don’t it; but it is difficult to de- termine whether or not a person actually knows the gospel that saves them. These use￾less phrases don’t describe a thing about what the gospel is and has left a devastating effect of people not knowing what it is that they are saved from nor how they are saved; which leaves a more serious effect of people ques￾tioning their salvation. Let’s not muddy the simplicity of salva￾tion that is in Christ with vague church sounding phrases that do not communicate anything. But rather present God’s word with clarity and assuredness. So here is the gospel: plain and simple. Sin was passed upon all men by one man Adam, and death is a consequence of this sin (Rom 5:12). Mankind has an eternal destiny of condemnation and wrath - Hell - because of this sin (Rom 6:23). No matter what good works one might do we are still found sinners in the sight of our Creator God. And all un￾righteousness and those who follow get in￾dignation and wrath. We cannot be found righteous for by God’s law we are found sin￾ners (Rom 3:19-20). If we have broken even one law we are found guilty. It is for this reason of not being able to create our own righteousness and being born in a sinful flesh that we need a savior (Titus 3:5). Christ is that Savior, God manifested in the flesh, sinless, died in our place on a cross 2000 years ago. Taking upon him the wrath and judgement that was intended for us sin￾ners. And it is through his bloodshed, burial, and resurrection on our behalf that we are able to have peace with God and forgiveness of our sins (1 Cor 15:1-4, Col 3:14). This good news is unto all but only those that believe in it are made righteous in Christ (Romans 3:22). It is then after we have heard this good news of Christ’s righteousness available to us freely, that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit and we are now part of Christ’s body the church (Eph 1:13) There is nothing that we need to do, no good works that are required, and no bad works that can separate us from our new po￾sition in Christ (Romans 8:35-39). Faith and belief in this information from God’s word is the gospel. The gospel is not accepting Jesus into your heart. The gospel is not making him lord of your life, it is not saying a prayer and it is not being baptized with water. So next time someone asks you if you are saved. Give them the clear assured answer “Yes! And let me tell you why!” Find more free resources at: www.graceambassadors.com

I have heard people argue there should be one morality -- not two: one for private and public. However, we might think that alcohol is evil for ourselves and our family. Trying to enforce that nationwide would cause too much chaos without enough benefit. On the other hand, when it comes to human life, it is wrong to ask one individual to die for our benefit. So, military service should be voluntary.
@grahamcombs4752
@grahamcombs4752 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnstewart7025 I think there are some morals that we should think are universal. I'm thinking Mosaic law: thou shalt not kill, steal, lie. Prohibition in the 1930s was a disaster and in fact promoted more crime and murder and civic corruption. I'm Catholic, we're just fine with beer and wine. But I was raised in part as a Southern Baptist and am essentially an involuntary teetotaler. Military is a tough one. It is voluntary in America since the 1970s. Prior to World War II, there was no draft I believe although we had already had two wars involving massive deaths -- the Civil War and World War One (my grandfather's war). World War II brought the draft (my father's war) and so it continued during Korea, and Vietnam. I "won" the lottery during Vietnam era. I had a high lottery number. That seguewayed into the all volunteer service. Most Americans are unaware, but war is raging across the planet and we have a "presence" in scores of countries. What has been solved? Not much it seems. Afghanistan is ending as Vietnam ended for America. After we left, Vietnam and China had a war (at least a million died). If you watch old movies and TV shows, military life is often portrayed as something Americans chafe under. War may be natural to the race, but military service isn't. Perhaps that has diminished the body count by something. I'm rambling. Sorry. This country has spent trillions with not much to show for it. I believe we need a strong deterrent. I wonder if the rest of the world is aware of how weary the public here is of carrying that burden. The previous president tapped into that growing mood. He did not create it. The elites who support these interventions are rarely those who have served or whose children will serve. In the Civil War, the upper classes literally bought their sons out of uniform. Irish immigrants and poor whites provided the body count.

tl;dr: Collectivism is not the solution for collectivism. Christianity's business model is dependence and therefore not individualism. I agree that people have moved to these messed up new ideas because they lost faith in Christianity. The fundamental problem however is not Christianity being abandoned. It's spiritual dependence. You place a strong correlation between individualism and Christianty. Likely because Christianty is the historical vechicle of individualism. But whats individualistic about someone who outsources their faith, knowledge and spirit to a church, institution or idealogy. People DEPEND on those things and therefore are not individuals. In that regard, Christiantiy is a form of collectivism, not individualism. When collectivists recognize something foul or immoral in their group, they will look for a "more moral" group to be a part of. The foundation of this problem is lack of individualism that didn't even exist when they were Christians. So people turning back to Christianity is not the solution. Because any form of individualism recognized by its followers comes from personal interpretation. The only context I can agree with you on the Christianity solution; is to submit to the idea than not all humans are capable of being individuals. Therefore they should be sheparded into a harmless and as traditional as collective as possible (ie Christianity). Which is how I regard your arguement. Still, noone should be suprized this happened. We live in a country where every law and policy the government puts out incentivizes spiritual, physical and economic dependence. A country that once had strong Christian values, which also incentivizes dependance. I just don't see how its possible for a Government or Church to incentivize independance (individualism) when dependence is their business model.

Simply : horrors overwhelemed the West because of their scale facilitated by modern technology. Blame was attributed to our political/cultural systems; in particular their rigidity and intolerance. The reaction : foolish tolerance and indulgence of ignorant and disturbed people, just as parents who indulge spoiled children. We have not sufficiently educated, acculturated and cultured our masses to whom we have given power. Afraid of totalitarianism we have lost sight of the fact that the indiscriminate is evil, that duscrimination is the essence of moral and cultural value and perspective. We have guven hand grenades to monkeys. Hence we see the dumbing down of all perspective : all cultures are the same, all religions are the same, all political ststems are rhe same, all moral codes are the same. If that is the case how have some societies perpetrated the unspeakable ?

15:15 exactly wrong... If you'll believe in gods, you'll believe in anything. The world is much more pleasant and safer with men who have the humility not to believe.

Everyone believes. The issue you have is with the definition of God or Gods. Your God is what you sacrifice to. If you are an alcoholic your God is alcohol. You sacrifice other things to get drunk. If your God is fitness you sacrifice other things when you go to the gym.

Not really bourne out by looking around at human society,humans are inventive,the list of things you will bow down to and offer your life to,time and energy,instead of the one true God,is very long indeed.

@Randy Gault and your religion is? I’m sure you are busy preaching something online if not elsewhere…. Feminism? Green energy? CRT? LGBTQ+? It’s kind of accepted and known that humans have a natural inclination to tribe up in common belief or emotion. Not to mention ideologies. I’d argue a bunch of meat puppets following the 10 commandments are a better group to be amongst than some branch of the modern religions

One thing I know for sure is that the role of history is to learn from it , from the mistakes we have made in the past . Instead of make again and again the same mistakes we should start to learn from it . I do not like or agree with anyone of those you call here scholars : Darvin , Freud , Nithe , Marx ....etc . Those are ideologist and not any scholars . Ps. Tzw elitom ( ich części na pewno ) z dobrobytu poprzewracało się im w ich głowach i dupach . Stwierdzam ten fakt na podstawie własnych obserwacji a nie plotek czy fantazji .

Observations on Darwin simplistic at best. Obviously profound and interesting. But flawed, despite the implied certainty and superiority. A lot of straw men involved.

My beloved my beautiful neighbors given from our God of the LIVING. No money nor any men's bring FORTH what is a true VALUABLE THAN MY NEIGHBORS. NONE MEN'S CAN BRING FORTH! THAT the TRUE VALUE OF MY NEIGHBORS my OWN. INDEED THESE SAME MINDS PRINCIPALITIES WHO SITS IN HIGH PLACES. WILL PLUCK A CHICKEN ALL ITS FEATHERS AND HUMILIATED MY BELOVED. AS THE CHICKEN WALKS AWAY. THESE SAME MINDS REACH IN HIS POCKET. FROM HIS HAND FOOD. Threw it in the GROUNDS. With sincere tears the chicken turns around and proceeded towards the food and the chicken after HUMILIATED ate the food. Indeed petitions are heard. Hosts will hold STILL and not move an INCH. Why? Because these principalities want my own to FIGHT one another. Remember is not flesh and blood nor our beautiful neighbors. But TRUE HOSTS WHO KEEP WATCH UPON THESE PRINCIPALITIES. The VOICE Hosts KNOWS. Not a STRANGER. What was hidden. Like these same minds do their demise in secret. Not to be seen for the people and by the people. Rather HIDES their own imaginations and demise. Not according to our GOD OF THE LIVING. REMEMBER is in plain view for all to see. Is like BRING all who hides? Why? I leave unto these principalities and same minds to decide. Hosts will say no one can enter in but a CHILDS. Is like what do you expect from a FATHER LOOKING AT A CHILD WITH SINCERE CONVERSATIONS. And LIKEWISE will know what is the true meaning of a CHILDS. LIKEWISE ALL TRUE HOSTS AND HEIRS AND OUR BEAUTIFUL SISTERS KNOWS? What is SOOTHING TO HEAR AND FOOD UNTO GOD AND THE SON OF MEN. Free space and the true meaning of TOLERANCE came from. Beloved how else? But my Hosts and Heirs are COMMANDED to 2nd. LOVE thy neighbors as thyself. No OTHER. NOW who will truly recognize! TRUTH will FIND its rightful place

Me thinketh isn't it interesting to hear the way the learned Professor talks about the difference between he and his grandfather. In spite of so much knowledge and yet so little wisdom in today's society he cannot or rather., does not want to tell the difference between an unselfish and a..........selfish life!@!?😝🤪😜😉 P.S. No wonder our kids are., so......confused!!!🤑

@Henry Kennedy Previous generations have witnessed horrible wars. Horrible tensions between super powers. Leaders being assassinated. Men and womens relationships rapidly changed… You don’t think the last 100 years have been fraught with tension and stress? Besides, the threat of nuclear armageddon has been around since the 50’s
