Heather this is so great. My only challenge i am finding is when you are trying to apply for multiple postitions, it is very time consuming to really identify the needs of what the company requires for each application. Hope you can give us some suggestions. Thanks again for the great channel, Ben.

Hi Ben, I understand that applying for multiple positions can be time-consuming. Here are some suggestions to streamline the process: 1) Create a master resume with all your relevant skills and experiences. 2) Prioritize the positions that align closely with your goals. 3) Incorporate keywords from job descriptions into your resume and cover letter. 4) Customize your objective or summary to highlight relevant skills and goals. 5) Use templates for different resume sections to save time. Remember to strike a balance between customization and efficiency. Best of luck with your applications!

I went through the same. I found a hack. I would literally have a tab open with the job ad, and another with my cover letter, I would halve my tabs so I could read one while working on the other, and the job ad would usually list out the attributes they are looking for in an applicant, I would literally answer each attribute that they listed on their job ad. This is how I was able to identify the needs of any company and still rapid fire-ish my applications. this was during a particular period of my life where i found myself suddenly with no job, a newborn, and a huge need for a job. This worked a treat.

The current employer I am considering applying for is asking for a cover letter to not exceed three pages while answering three specifics questions. I am pressured in thinking the letter should be in depth but struggle with the structure. Any tips would be highly appreciated.

It's essential to be concise yet thorough. Start with an engaging intro, then address each question in its own section, focusing on clarity and relevance. Conclude by tying your answers to your fit for the role. Be sure to edit for brevity while keeping the content strong. Best of luck!

He's going to have a crapload of letters to go through. do him a favour - be concise. He's obviously filtering out people on the basis of whether they know the subject matter and ability to communicate it. short and sweet is the gun move.

Question guys. Do we need a Resume when applying for a different position in same company.

Great question. It depends on the company and the positions. Are the positions in different divisions with different hiring managers?

My question is: what do ypu when you're applying for a job that isn't being written about in magazines. I think the majority are applying for jobs -- myself included -- that arent going to be noticed by Entrepreneur Magazine. They're probably not even going to make the local news in most cases.
@ProfessorHeatherAustin

Great point! Even for jobs that aren’t in the spotlight, researching the company and its industry can still give you valuable insights. Look for news releases, company blogs, or industry forums. This knowledge can help you tailor your application and stand out, regardless of the job's public profile. Every role matters!

Hello Professor Heather, I need your opinion. I am looking to get back into the workforce after being retired for several yrs and graduating with a Bachelor’s from College last yr. My background is in IT (latter part of my military career) and Administrative (early part of my career). With that said, if I am looking to get bk into IT, but have an expired A+ certification with a 2 yr degree in Information Systems Management, would an expired cert automatically disqualify me, even though I heard that companies usually train new employees? TYIA.
@ProfessorHeatherAustin
@ProfessorHeatherAustin Жыл бұрын
An expired certification can be a hurdle when trying to re-enter the workforce, but it doesn't have to automatically disqualify you. Highlight your relevant education, experience and willingness to learn and be open about your desire to renew your certification. Showing that you are motivated, flexible, and willing to learn and grow will be a great asset for any employer. Also, have you consider renewing your certification?
@tavanishas
@tavanishas Жыл бұрын
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin Thank you for the response. Yes, I am definitely willing and am wanting to renew my certification but it is a bit of a challenge for me right now, financially. Hoping and trying to research if employers would do so.

Don't let it hold you back @@tavanishas . If you're right for the job and you sell it hard they might not mind helping you get the accreditation, as long as the expiration and renewal is simply a case of doing the paperwork.

The third paragraph was the best. However, the first paragraph should show more enthusiasm. Also, I heard that you should never say ‘refer to my resume’ like the 2nd paragraph.

When I see examples, they seem so disingenuous. I'm choking on the horse manure as I read them. Surely, hiring managers are not mesmerized by the phony praise and adulation. Moreover, the sample cover letters are too specific to be generally helpful. The truth is most people aren't applying because they're company sycophants. They're applying because they need a job to live and are hoping for potential advancement.
@JoseRap

lol thats true. I hate the ass kissing too. My approach to cover letters: I keep in mind the person sifting through all the applications is a person - probably doing so at the end of their day after already doing a full days work, or perhaps on thursday or friday afternoon - because of this I try to make it easy for them, start with a little personality but then, Be direct, figure out what the company requires and answer that, after doing so you may add a bit of personality at the end. But the main job of the Cover Letter is to sell yourself, and not to kiss ass.

When you say that you love a company, isn't that a lie. You don't know the inner workings of a company and it's odd to love working for a company.
@JoseRap
@JoseRap Жыл бұрын
its a lie. its cringe. If i was hiring for the position and i see this on a wednesday afternoon 3:30pm I'm deleting your stupid application because I dont need anyone loving the company. I need the job done. can you do the job yes or no? Cover letter needs some personality but mostly it's selling that you can do the job and are right for the job.

To land a job you have to be completely fake and flatter the company. "I love that your company values a team-building environment". Its a bullcrap word game to get hired.

Hi there! Thanks for sharing your honest opinion. If you don’t have love and excitement for the position, it might not be the fit for you. What type of work are you looking for?
@anne-marieshaffer4928
@anne-marieshaffer4928 Жыл бұрын
Completely agree! No one should have to be a sycophant to land a job. I don't want to work for a company that hires people based on how much brown-nosing one does. I know my value and that I have a lot to offer a good company. My work ethic far exceeds the current crop of candidates. But I won't lie and blow sunshine up anyone's skirt to land an interview. If a company is unable to see how shallow that is, are they really worth working for?

I would laugh at your application if you kiss ass. It's thursday afternoon, I've been getting grilled all week and i just need someone can you do the job yes or n? and then if it's a yes then the next step is do i want to work with this person? if you're application is cringe then no.
