I saw Neil and his brother at the Royal Albert Hall as The Finn Brothers, the night after the former Crowded House drummer Paul Hester took his own life. No one knew what was going on at the time but there was something, some sort of energy in that place that night. Despite the clowning around coming on stage with his brother, once the music started, it got half way through the song, just after the middle 8 and the song stopped and Neil wandered to the edge of the stage, sans mic, and said to the crowd "I'm gonna need your help with this one" and just started with the first half of the first line of the chorus - remember, he's about 15ft away from his stage mic at this point - and the crowd, lowly, but surely replied with the next half. And it grew, and it grew. 5000 people singing along in quiet voices to one of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century. Man, I've never felt anything like it at a gig, before or since, like a huge shiver going right through me. I'll never ever forget it, it is one of my most precious memories. The most emotional gig I've ever ever been to. There was that much of an atmosphere that night, you could have stuck your tongue out and tasted it. Later on that night, it became clear what had happened in the previous 24 hours... and why that night was such a special evening.
@mburlandСағат бұрын
@@stevem-h3562 I was there a few nights later. They had Paul's snare drum on its own at the front of the stage under a spotlight if I remember rightly. Nick was there and played, as he had the previous nights. Show ended with a spirited "Throw Your Arms Around Me" followed by "The Parting Glass." "English Trees" always makes me think of that show. Sadness, but also the power that music has, especially when shared.

The Beach Boys were the first band I fell in love with. I was only 5-years-old and would listen to my uncle's music collection. They were my favourite band until I was about 8 when I discovered how much I loved the Beattles. I remember my mom's friend comparing me to a teenager as I would put on records and use a headset to blast the music full-blast and rock out!

Beach Boys forever for me though I understand the Beatles fans.
@bobbest86275 сағат бұрын
That describes me also… Sounds like we are about the same age. I’m a hard-core Beatles fan but I never let go of the beach boys. One of the beach boys songs that meant a lot to me is “Girl don’t Tell Me.” it was the B-side to Barbara Ann. I had a little puppy love - first kiss thing with a girl for a couple summers when she used to come out and stay with her grandparents. Suddenly she stopped writing back to me… Next time I saw her, she was more grown-up than me (because girls develop faster than boys). And she realized how attractive she was. Anyway… Still think back to that whenever I hear that song.

Love the Crowded House pick. Fantastic song! I was a radio DJ back in the 80’s and I remember seeing the band Fairground Attraction perform their song, “Perfect” on an awards show. Apparently it was a smash in other parts of the world. I fell in love with it, found the 45, and played it on the air. It quickly became the most requested song we’d ever played. I could never figure out why it didn’t take off in the USA. It didn’t make it past 80 on the Billboard Top 100. Still boggles my mind.

My suggestion: Back in early 1981, the group Ambrosia had a song out from the soundtrack of the movie "Inside Moves". It was called "Outside", and it perfectly summed up my life at that moment: "living on the outside looking in". I was a senior in high school who'd broken up with my boyfriend, and I was also having other problems. The song summed me up well. I looked for it for *years* and finally found a recording here on KZbin!

"Beatles For Sale" is, to me, the last "early" Beatles album. The way the production sounds still has that early -Beatles cold and raw sound that I always liked. It is truly a transitional work, which seems ironic in that there are more cover versions on this album than any other Beatles' album-a reflection of their grueling touring and TV appearance schedule in those insane Beatlemania days. This is a great album to listen to on a cold winter's day for me (it's snowing in Chicagoland right now as I write this!). This is also the last album that was made before George began to shed his "Quiet Beatle" status and became a songwriting force to be reckoned with.

There's a reason Brian Wilson picked those guys to go out on the road with. @ProfessorofRock - a suggestion: Would it be feasible to do a certain show for a specific day of the week? For example, on Mondays, do #1 In Our Hearts, Tuesdays do Revelations, etc. so we can have an expectation of what you'll be presenting. Your thoughts?

I was a fan of Split Enz i had their greatest hits CD but I never had any of the Crowded House CD's though but heard their songs on the radio and videos on KZbin i like both bands; the Beach Boys i heard them on AM radio constantly before I had any of their records, I've heard some obscure songs I'd never heard before of the Beach Boys recently; i liked some of Pearl Jam's songs especially Jeremy and Even Flow but never really was a fan of the band however; i liked most of the Beatles songs but I preferred a lot of their lesser known songs that were never heard on radio like on this album here and this was another great episode of hearing about classic rock and roll artists as always Thank You Professor.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶

I have to disagree with you on "Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" being better than "Black". While I appreciate your insight into the former song Professor, the latter one is much more impactful to me. Thirty years later, it still hits me the same. Thanks for the video man! Cheers.

@ damn right! it’s a perfect “transition album” as it still feels like a Beatles album yet still going in the new direction

Wood Face by Crowded House is a great album. Take the Weather With You is another song I like from this album. Elderly Woman In A Small Town made me pay attention to Pearl Jam music. Just Breathe from Backspacer is another great Eddie Vedder song.

"Fall at Your Feet" is a beautiful chorus with a sinister song wrapped around it. Hear me out. This is almost as much of a stalker song as "Every Breath You Take" except in "Fall at Your Feet," the narrator suffers from obsessive, unrequited love. It's the song of the permanently "friendzoned" guy trapped outside and scheming for a way in. What makes the song even *more* sinister are the opening lines, which suggest the narrator is self-pleasuring while thinking of his obsession. To me, the "who knows where that might lead?" line at the end of the bridge suggests as much cunning as desperation. All of this, I think, makes this song even more interesting. It's beautiful AND sinister.

I was a huge Split Enz fan back in the day, so Crowded House and Finn Bros was a must. Woodface is by far my favorite from CH, so glad Tim was in it. It was too good for public consumption. And Brian is a 20th Century genius, Beach Boys in some ways hit me harder than the Beatles, but I’m a 67 year old California native, my parents were literal beach bums and befriended the legends of surfing here.

I love Roseanne Cash's version of The Beatles classic!! A lot of people didn't even know it was a Beatles song!! My choice for song by Eagles that needs another listen is Doolin Dalton/ Desperado reprise from their Desperado album!! It gives an ending to both songs!! Great song choices Professor Of Rock!! Cindy Snow!!

I probably have heard all of these at least once before 2024 (even Pearl Jam whose music I have had a difficult experience connecting with). As a Beatlemaniac, I feel closest to "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party". That's between having heard *Beatles for Sale,* having covered the song live and having been friends since 1999 with a fellow musician who I met through the Chicago fandom named Donna Frost who referenced "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" in a song named after Paul McCartney on her solo record called *Girls like Us.* Speaking of Chicago, here are four of my choices. Chicago: "Where Do We Go from Here" Deep Purple: "Child in Time" Prince: "Take Me with U" Billy Joel: "This Night"

So many great songs by Crowded House. Of course, Fall at Your Feet is amazing. Another not so well known masterpiece is Nails in My Feet. Another Feet song, LOL And a version of Fall at Your Feet that I think is even a little more haunting and goes head to head with CH is Jesse Cook's amazing flamenco guitar version of Fall at Your Feet.

I think The Beatles "Yes it is" from the U.S. album "BEATLES VI," in my opinion, has to be the most melancholy song from that time period.

Struck by how much Fall At Your Feet reminds me of Keith Urban’s Break On Me. Different genre? Sure, but the line between rock and country is often blurred.
