So, having binged the entire 90s cartoon series in the last few months, I just want to explain what they were probably going for with Cyclops and Storm. Storm is Claustrophobic, so having stages that are series of narrow tunnels that also restrict her ability to breathe make some sense. And during I believe one of the first Morlock episodes, although I may be wrong on what episode, Cyclops has to go underground, or is taken underground and comments something to the effect of "I won't be much use underground, my power comes from sunlight" and having fallen down a wiki hole for marvel stuff the better part of two years ago, before more recent retcons, Cyclops' power manifested similar to superman's in the sense that his body absorbs sunlight/solar radiation, and concentrates it, before he releases it in the form of optic blasts. So sticking him underground in a mine where he can't recharge makes sense in that respect, though like the game, this virtually never comes up in the series otherwise. It would be pretty lame anyway to just be Cyclops without his optic blasts so I understand it entirely.

Sad that it wasn't mentioned, but the reason the music is so good is because of legendary composer Tim Follin, who allways went above and beyond composing his soundtrack regardless of the quality of the game. So a lot of kind of mediocre games end up with killer tunes. Often the music of the game becomes more famous than the game itself. If anyone is curious, check out his work with pictionary for the nes, solstice or silver surfer. Haven't played any of them, but the ost is excellent.

I own Solstice. Haven't played much of it, but it seems to be (and I've heard it is) a decent enough game, surprisingly enough. Still an NES game (so kind of hard, kind of cryptic, and I don't think you can save), but I've heard good things. Also, the title theme apparently takes up the majority of the cartridge space lol.

Agreed. I have seen plenty of other games with the Follins behind the soundtrack, and I have yet to find an instance where they did not knock it out of the park. The quality of the games themselves, on the other hand, is a different matter entirely. I never played this game, but the gameplay legitimately infuriated me, seeing the crap that Jared had to go through. And yet, I find myself bopping my head to those sweet chuptunes. Case in point... a game that is equally as reviled - the Silver Surfer game on the NES. However, holy crap (!!!) that one track - if you know, you definitely know.

Arcade is hooking them to the murderworld, reading their fears and making a world based on that, I think. So, Storm and Cyclops are possibly claustrophobic (accurate to the comics, for Storm at least). Wolverine could be coulrophobic (fear of clowns) and Gambit may be ludophobic (fear of games). As for Spidey, maybe he's afraid of construction sites. Or, considering he appeared twice, he's actually afraid of Shocker. Kidding aside, I think Spidey's levels weren't based on his fears because Arcade was specifically after the X-Men. Arcade likely had to slap something together quickly in his case to stop him from interfering.

Never heard of it until Jared played it, but it's not a great loss. Watching Jared suffer through 15 videos made me admire his tenacity. I really thought he was going to give up at some point because of how BS it was. Read that it was one of those rushed out for the holiday season games. A bit of a shame since it could have been a decent game if it was given some more polish. It's not really that it's hard. It's just tedious. If they had some continues, a checkpoint system, more lives, and enemies did a little less damage it would have been a lot better.

And when you consider that the next one is 12, it's going to take him a bit. Or if he decides to do a full dive into 10-2.

I remember so many LJN games that *almost* seemed good. Something would somehow ruin it, though it wasn't often the music.

See this is the kind of pro Jared that I love and hold dear. Nothing on your final fantasy videos, but I don't really care much for final fantasy, I like seeing games that I may or may not know, even the bad ones, it just makes it way more interesting to find something that not a lot of people talk about.

Watching the AVGN's videos on LJN gives some great retrospective on how they're formula worked. "Oh hey, this game looks fun" *1 hour later* "This Game Is Impossible!"

LJN games are always a crapshoot. Sometimes you get a halfway decent game marred by some questionable moments. Other times you get an abomination wrapped in a plastic case.

The Storm swimming levels are a haunting reminder of LJN's Wolverine. I kinda love that game, only due to the specific nostalgia I have attached to it....but... FUCK the swimming level.

LJN was truly the king of terrible publishers. The _only_ game that was good from them was Spiderman & Venom: Maximum Carnage.

I wouldn't call that game "good" so much as "nearly playable", which from them was amazingly high quality.
