My niece's Outback tie rod dropped out at the exact moment she got back from a long trip on winding mountain roads in Colorado. She turned into a parking lot in town at low speed and blammo.

Best time that something like that could happen. Hopefully didn’t mess up too much.

@@SomcallmejameSits the lack of control that frightened me, cant do a thing apart from brake but carefully while youf vehicle tries to "tuck & roll". I felt the rear come up in the air as it dragged us off the road, luckily we went through a small tree which brought it back down

I got back to Denver from Arizona and took my car in the next day because right when I got back into Denver, my clock spring gave out. They also found I needed new sway bar links. 1,080 mile round trip per the odometer.

Looks like it was a good idea to repair the wheel stud so you were able to avert a real disaster with the loose castle nut. The castle nut being handled properly sounds like it is important.

Nice video. Thanks Mr. Subaru. My wife and I just bought our first Subaru...an Impreza. It's intended to be a third vehicle for the family, one our kids (17 & 19) can use without having to ask mom and dad for a ride. Thing is, I find myself wanting to drive it more than my car! I never had any type of brand loyalty toward a car manufacturer in the past but that might be changing.

Every outer tie rod end I've ever replaced, I let the joint hold the end. I use the wrench on the lock nut and on the inner (adjuster). I'm also a both over kind of guy. Quick and easy and I've never had one back off. I don't usually torque any of that either, I just make sure the joint is seated and the nut I tighten down until tight, then adjust to the proper slot in the nut. Also never had a return on one of those either. It's how I was taught both in school and in the dealership back-in-the-day. Still a perfectly acceptable job as usual. I like watching through even the back-to-the-basics repairs, like this one, just to see the differences in method that appear.

Love my Subie, but I think I have broken a wheel stud every time I have changed a tire, and my local tire company has pretty much done the same thing when rotating them. I keep telling myself to just change them all out with good ones, and you make it look so easy.

I had that castle nut back off on my '13 FRS. No work was done other than me fixing it afterwards. I think that bolt might stretch a bit. But yea super scary.

Hot tip on counting tie rod end turns. Aftermarket tie rod ends are NOT always the same dimensions as the OEM parts. I once replaced tie rod ends on my Acura with a major aftermarket brand (Moog IIRC) by the "count the turns" method and ended up with way too much toe-in. If your replacment parts are not the same as the original, measure the total tie rod length and adjust the new end until it's about the same. That will likely be closer than counting turns.

Use a string from back to front wheel to check toe. More accurate than counting threads. you can't trust thread count on something loose or worn

Another Subaru owner here. What’s your thoughts on lubricating threaded parts like lug it’s, with a bit of grease. Allows more accurate torquing and easier removal.

I needed to replace all the wheel studs and nuts on my '10 Outback - they were all partially cross threaded and well beaten from 11 years of tire-shop impact wrenching. Easily the worst I'd seen on any car in my 55 years of vehicle ownership.

Hi, i have a question.... i am not in the same location as you but hopefully you can share your opinion. I have a subaru impreza 2008 model with around 98,000km to it. it got an ABS and handbrake lights on 3 months back. checked the brakefluid and is fine, the braking system also works great still but decided to go check with my mechanic. They ran it on computer and it detected a "motor and motor relay" as the cause for that was told to replace the ABS pump but i didnt since they didnt have a new one. First forward and i am on the 3rd month and the car still brakes perfectly and works perfectly although their were instances where the ABS and hand brakes would go off for some minutes and return but they were just random moments so i couldnt get a hold of what instance triggered and so i am still driving with those 2 lights on..... What do you think is the issue here beacuse i have tried searching for related videos or blogs but not yet seen one matching my issue?

Normally if I have one broken stud, I replace the others on that wheel. It"s just cheap insurance. If one is bad the others are not that far away from failing. If I have time I will all of the wheel studs. Just gives piece of mind.
