Nutcase Ian Bell and Slightly Mad Studios couldn't make a proper sim even after a combined 6+ years of development for PC1 and PC2. Apparently at some point during development of PC3, nothing was going right with the updated tire physics, AI and overall vehicle tuning etc. and the team realized it just couldn't make a realistic racing simulator. So they kept what they had, dumbed it down and started removing things that didn't work properly (advanced tire model physics, AI decision making regarding pit strategy during qualifying/ race and the proper tuning to ensure it was all polished. This is the end result: PROJECT GREED (GRID). It's unfortunate when lazy devs abandon their original vision due to lack of leadership and talent.

I have no problem with a franchise changing direction. An arcade racer is not for me but I wish SMS success. What irks is seeing Ian and Nathan Bell blatantly gaslighting their existing player base by refusing to admit there has been a change of direction. It's insulting our intelligence and dishonest.

Playing devil's advocate, if the handling in the final build is more on the simulator side of things and they have baked in assists turned on in the preview code to keep the influencers happy, then the removal of pit stops isn't really that much of a change. However if the handling remains as described here then I can definitely see your point.

@@wabbit234 It's not just the handling. Pretty much every communication SMS have released has had something in it to suggest a move well away from the structure of previous games. For example "owning" and upgrading cars, is pure Forza or GT. I have zero interest in unlocking content in a racing game and zero interest in souping up street cars with upgrades. Other people do, and that's fine, and SMS can make whatever game they want, but doing all that while simultaneously trying to reassure me that the game is still for me is total BS.

Zedeeyen To be fair almost every racing game pitches itself as being for everyone. In fact make that every video game of any kind. They all pitch themselves as perfect for beginners and die hard fans alike. It’s not good marketing to come out and tell a portion of the market that your game isn’t for them. There is enough video from a huge number of sources for you to figure that out for yourself but a company is never going to come out and say it.

Fair review, and I think you hit the nail on the head. This game isn't for "hardcore" simracers, but for people who actually want a "game" with more realistic handling. And I do agree with you, they shouldn't've named is Project Cars 3

Inori GC They could have named it Project COVID-19 and we would still have bought it if it was any good! The problem isn’t with what it is called. It’s with what it IS. I don’t mind the arcade stuff one tiny bit, if it were ADDED to the existing game. But scorched earth game development isn’t a great idea. The idea is to BUILD your base, not completely replace it...

Yes it was as simple as not calling it PC3. If it was called something like "Shift Motosport" or whatever there wouldn't be any controversy whatsoever. People would just assume they finally got around to make that Shift game(everyone says) they always wanted to make.

Nick S. EA hold the rights to the Shift name, so can that idea. And sorry, but I don’t really think it’s just about the name. Most of the base would have been fine with the new game if only pits, tires and fuel had been retained AS OPTIONS. Ian Bell said it would be Shift-like over two years ago, but nobody ever dreamed he’d throw out the baby with the bath water. You can drive round any amount of nerfed handling, especially if it gains you decent pad handling (ask any GTS wheel player!), but you can’t drive around core motorsports detail missing. It’s the laziness of the devs that is the most divisive. Leave the core pits/tires/fuel code in (as options) even without the slightest improvement, this is a different story. But why drop code you already have?

PCARS never fostered a community, really. They tried in PCARS 1. They killed it in PCARS 2 (removing mods.txt and making us have to break the game in order to run custom liveries, etc.) and they've basically shrugged and were like "who needs community anyways? we'll just make forza 2.5 and focus on single player"

If it has any other game I think most of us wouldn't be bothered by it. And the ones who do enjoy more casual games would actually look forward to some arcade motorsport game and be what Grid 2019 wasn't.

They're 100% going against their own title. That's a bad thing.

Really happy with this direction. There hasn’t been a good single player circuit racing game in a long time. The hardcore sim market is fairly packed at the moment for the size of the audience while the more single player focussed market is a barren wasteland. I hope they nail it

I don't have that much time to play any more, and it can be months between each time I play a racing game, so I've started to appreciate more arcade sims as they are much easier to just jump into and play without practicing for hours before a race. So perhaps this is just what I need.

Same. I have found quick Gran Turismo races (30 min or less) perfect for my schedule. I want the look and feel of a SIM but not necessarily the hassle of an extended racing set up. Although i do like to qualify instead of being placed at the back of the pack every race.

I completely agree with what you mean by the branding and everything. I enjoyed the first 2 PCARS games and heard there was going to be gamey elements. That's not a problem as long as they kept the main parts of the first 2 games. What then annoyed me is how they then told us "it's a sim game" whilst also removing the parts that helped PCARS1/2 be a sim. If they had come out and said "we're making a new series as a spin-off like the Forza series and it's called x" then fine. I get it. I'd probably get it somewhere down the line knowing that we've got something coming on the next-gen of consoles. But the mess of their communication has put me off buying this game at all and hoping it's not a new direction.

Just every time I saw the F1 car slide and not spin out I was infuriated beyond belief. Project cars 2 was my first sim game so I didn’t have much of an issue with the force feedback issues many other people had, making it a beautiful game to play with so many great historic cars that felt unique and real to the time. I was super stocked for this one to fix the handling issue people complained about so it would be more well respected but I guess they went this route instead. I’m just disappointed.

I've been wondering and I could be totally wrong: Since AMS2 and PC2 use the same engine, if SMS stayed true to the sim path, PC3 would have been like AMS2 but with more cars and tracks, since they both use the same engine and they're both sims. Since AMS2 came out first, a sim version PC3 would have had to differentiate itself somehow to be, well different, from AMS2. So maybe they went with the decision to go down the arcade route, and that's fine! It looks like a decent arcade game. I don't know if that makes sense but yeah

It sort of makes sense, but Ian Bell said PC3 was to be the spiritual successor to Shift well before Reiza asked if they could license the Madness engine. AMS2 is PC-only, and even on PC, I don't think AMS2 would have been a serious rival for a sim version of PC3 commercially. PC2 comfortably outsells AMS2 and has 10x the users. I think rather than AMS2 being a threat sales-wise to a sim version of PC3, Reiza should hopefully be more successful with AMS2 thanks to PC3 taking its new direction.

@@Leynad778 At very few occasions I felt that ACC was mushy. I think most of the times it feels just as planted as iRacing, maybe except for the braking aspect. The steering, sliding etc is definitely bang on, and not even in the playing field with PC2 kinda mushiness.

For some reason that I can't put the finger on, the Game looks at this point far more better than when they showed it for first time. The rear spoilers don't fall at the slightest touch anymore, and sounds and appears to be more a Project Cars, and not at all like a GRID 2019 with less lens flares.

I have PC1 and PC2 and i am a casual gamer. I won't purchase PC3, i don't like career mode with very short races, very short championship and there isn't an offline custom championship mode. it's like Grid 2019, no interest to me.

My opinion is: we don't need everything to be hardcore Sim racing. I do play iRacing, ACC Ranked and so on. But sometimes I just want to get home after a day of work and play a racing game with a controller. Basically plug and play. And that's why I love gran turismo and forza motorsports, and I probably like PC3 too.

eh, im still not happy about this. but lets be honest, most of my sim racing isnt really sim racing. its mostly project cars 2 or dirt rally. neither of which were the best of sims to start with. dirt rally especially, as by definition its a rally game. its about sliding around etc. and as great as it is. im pretty sure its still very simcade as its still quite easy to play for the most part. so maybe project cars 3 will be right up my alley? i guess i am a pretty casual player. usually on a friday or saturday night, in vr, with my wheel and most importantly a few drinks... yeah. ok. im definitely a casual gamer not a sim racer, lol.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good simulator - I think I spend most of my time in them (ACC, rFactor 2, AMS2 etc) but there something to be said for some silly fun racing with your mates, so despite what many people wanted PC3 to be, I think it has potential to be a fun distraction from the all-too-serious sim racing all the time. I think I'm actually looking forward to it.

We have enough sims, so I welcome a new arcade racer. I saw some nighttime city driving and it looked great. But they should've called it Grid 3 or NFS: Shift 3 instead of PC3.

I loved Project Cars and PC2 and logged hundreds of hours on PC2. I love ACC also (on PS4). I really don't mind an arcade version of PC2 as the concept of simply jumping into a single player race without elaborate set-up requirements has a certain appeal to me. But the thing I like most about the PC series (and ACC) is the adjustability of the game to make the racing experience more true to life. By this I mean the ability to compress time, add dynamic weather events etc to simulate a 12 or 24 hour race over a 2 to 4 hour period. I've done this a dozen times at least. I'm assuming that since PC3 has removed pit stops, this is no longer an option. I was hoping PC3 would be similar to PC2 but with a bit more realism such as AI mistakes, safety cars and perhaps larger fields. But it definitely went in a different direction !

I Just like upgrading/tuning cars and having half decent physics, I really liked Forza Horizon back when I wasnt into sims. Question I have would be whether the bugs from PC2 that never got resolved made their way to PC3... E.g. the clutch issue? I also found PC2 has excessive clutch slip when snap shifting using the h-pattern. Those detract somewhat from the experience, so I hope they got sorted in PC3...

Handling was redeveloped for the console controller pad users and when not using a steering wheel and pedals, be interesting to see how different it handles with a console controller tho!!

I played PC2 with the rift in vr and it's so great, it beats Assetto Corsa for me because I'm not a hc sim racer, I just want to have fun, good looking racing in VR and this sounds perfect for that, so much so that I ordered a new pc and the Reverb G2 to get the best out of it :) Great early impressions, thanks!

I also love racing games and have been playing them for years, formula 1, rally, Forza, Gran Turismo, street rod 🤣, test drive, project cars 1 and 2. Assetto Corsa, Horizon, need for speed, GRID (I enjoy the new one, it’s fun) and I’m on a pad no wheel or pedals at the moment, also love cars in real life and come from a car family. I have watched you before on the past and I have subbed too. Also great Microsoft flight simulator videos too my Dad worked in aviation so I like planes too. ✈️. So with project cars 3 half of me is like oh this will fun I love cars and racing games and I’m on a pad, other half of me is like angry at there decisions and removal of pit stops etc. I’m not sure 🤔 if I should pre order or wait for a sale. I will be upgrading to Xbox series X, have Xbox one x and PS4 pro and 4 k HDR tv and all so really hyped for next Forza. Also enjoy assetto Corsa and ACC there sound and physics is brilliant. Anyway I am keeping a keen eye on project cars 3 though! Love your videos though keep it up and keep racing hard. Great content.

The problem is that this game is being reviewed by PC gamers/simmers. Imagine being a console player (bet you all were, once!) with no access to iRacing, rF2 or AMS2. Imagine that on console, your choices for a sim that took motorsports seriously enough to at least have moderately accurate handling were ACC and PC2. Now imagine a world where 50% of your available choices suddenly decided they wanted to make another Grid (despite PC2 massively outselling Grid) and now your ONLY choice is ACC, which only has one car class (and another pretty similar class on the way as paid DLC) and a pretty limited track selection. Would you be as tolerant? This game will live or die by its console sales, and SMS just basically alienated its entire adult base. Yes, if you are an eight year old that loves liveries, upgrades and bashing your way to the front in a three lap race (in other words, if you hate the sport of motor racing!) it’s ‘the best game EVER, bro’... But if you’ve passed puberty and don’t have a four figure PC gaming rig, you’ve just been tinkled on from a great height. I love your videos, but try to remember that the PC sector is a fraction of console sales, and try to put yourself in our shoes a bit because there won’t be a console review until much closer to shipping. I agree with you 100% Same thing could be said say 10 years ago when sim racer games weren't as popular as today. Back then it was all about Test drive, Need for speed, Midnight club. Sure there was gran turismo, forza motorsport, and nascar. I'm making that point cause in today's racing game scene its always sim sim sim. Sometimes I just want to race and have fun and not worry about pits, lap times, and having the best setup. I'm excited for this, it reminds me of need for speed shift, which I loved along with need for speed pro street back in the day. Yeah I know it has the project cars name, but so what...

Josh B The real issue is, why were PC2’s sim elements thrown out as PC3’s arcade elements were added? What’s wrong with a game that can do BOTH? That is the core success strategy of GTS & FM7. Yes, you can play them pretty arcade. But you can also play them fairly serious sim, allowing for the handling issues. PC3 is the game that should have been ADDED to PC2, not the game that replaced it.

Remember when AC was bashed and PCARS was THE sim racer promised land? Look where Kunos got with less funding than these guys when they started. In less than five years, this is their third game, and Kunos is being highly praised with ACC and just released an awesome new content for the game which is the GT4 pack. It's bonkers, literally madness.

i loved shift 1 and 2 thats what made me get get first project cars 1. but i kinda used it as a 4k showcase , it look great. the second again i treated as a toy any car any track in any weather in vr. but this sounds exactly what i want. earning cars and unlocking stuff.

Let's be honest here. None of the established Sims were great when they first arrived, ALL of them had to go through several updates to get to a point where SIM racers started liking what they'd bought, and even then some we're never satisfied. I'm sure given 6 months of development together with users feedback, PC3 will become a great all-round SIM/game and possibly the first to convert just gamers into tomorrows SIM racers.

No, this game is not a sim. The force feedback is bad (i know it is in pc2 as well), there's no pitstops, and the xp system, weird customization and upgrades makes this game feel like a tryhard version of nfs or forza. So to make this gmae into a real sim, it'd need a major redesign.

Hi GamerMuscleVideos, May I ask with Project Cars 3, how many laps max can you go on each track in a race? Is your version that you are trying a full version of the game or is it just a small demo of just certain tracks? No one seems to know or tell us, since there are no pits, the length of race laps max we can do. Thanks though for the preview of PC3.

I purchased the game at a very low price on STEAM and knew what to expect from your review and others. I agree with you, the game is nothing more than a GRID or NFS arcade type game. I still do Project Cars 2 from time to time. much better than this game. I guess no more new Project Cars games since Electronic Arts said no more. Also Project Cars 2 is no longer listed on STEAM but my game still works fine. Anyway, take care.

I really want arcade game with vehicles feel changing vastly from other, nice vehicle damage and car customization and weight ballance being key mechanic to get speed. Generally I want Project Gotham Racing with destruction model from the first GRID, NFS visual upgrades and mix between NFS and Forza car customization. With small amount of supercars, tons of shitboxes and touring cars, option to create fictional race cars within existing regulations, RWD Subaru Legacy BTCC Super Touring for example. Dream that will never come true sadly. TBH I would be happy with just Project Gotham Racing 5. Finished PGR4 for nth time recently and fell in love with this game once again.

What I think would be cool if they have a mode for full-on sim-ness where there's no customization and you drive the race cars (spec'd and tuned standard across) based on class-tier like ACC. Because with the deep customization, it collides with the simulation aspects like you drive the car based on what it is built (and driven) by default. For a fun single-player campaign like they said, yea I think customization is cool and lives up to Shift 2 as spiritual successor. But if they really want this game to be sim and competitive (both online and campaign) as well, restrict cars to class type race and full on sim config is good way to go. So far I don't see tire pressures/fuel gauge and pit stops as they go hand in hand which bugs me. Yea I understand why people aren't happy with this which is fair, I notice that lack of sim-ness action in reveals too. I hope I'm wrong though, really do.

It's the Halloween III of simcade racers! I appreciate the diversity, since I finally have a PC that can run a sim properly. rF2 is my favorite because of the incredible wheel feedback and the variety of tracks and cars (especially the mods). Sometimes, I just want to sit on my couch, grab my controller, and catch a ridiculous powerslide around a corner at 180 mph within inches of the other cars and track obstacles. It's ok to appreciate both.

I love my sim racers, and they provide an excellent racing experience. They dont however always provide the adrenalin that arcade racers can provide. ACC is awesome in its own right, but for sheer frills and rush, I couldnt beat Grid last year. The racing was awesome. Sometime I feel the need for an arcade racer.

Every time I see gameplay GRID pops into mind. I purchased Grid last week and the handling way to Arcady for me. I truly feel this game PC3 is what Grid should have been also. This might be similar but better physics even though it’s not as hardcore as the last game. I’m interested in seeing people compare PC2 cars to PC3 cars and seeing how they stack up. It’s obvious PC2 is more realistic and PC3 is less somewhat less but still enjoyable.

Thanks for a very informative review. The best I've seen so far. For all its annoying flaws, PC2 offered an amazing range of racing experiences with 180 cars and 60 tracks in one package, and at £45 it was incredible value. While a good section of the sim-racing crowd hated the newcomer with a vengeance, and whether you liked the end results or not, the physics engine and live-track and weather system really pushed simulation forwards. While many are breathing a sigh of relief that SMS have abandoned the sim-racing arena, I feel the lack of a serious rival to Kunos and iRacing will leave us poorer.

I would rather that they released more project cars 2 season passes. With more content and had a combination of real and engineered fictional tracks .Especially more historic race cars .It needs to maintain the sim aspect .Granted that sim racing is difficult .I argue more rewarding .For the pragmatic aspect of on line racing and career mode then a rule protocol should be in place .I would suggest a recovery button that comes with a point system .A variation of points deducted according to the zone or place on the track that the recovery is used .Also the implementation of this to a ranking system .The point is .Don't water down the sim aspect of the game .Better for more access to to have a rule and rewards ,deduction .This also would include collisions with the at fault drivers receiving deductions post race .Players would still find the sim aspect difficult but a well implemented set of rules would help them to see the race through and improve the next time .

Comparing this game to Forza is exactly what I was expecting and hoping to hear. Forza 7 on pc (mine at least) crashes every 2 races, a game like Forza on a stable engine is all I wanted. Can't wait for this.

Looks more like they finally have a project cars game that fits what those games have always been about. Only this time not pretending to be a realistic simulator with industry best tire model which it has never been. To me this looks like a fun driving game. Hopefully good career mode, good car upgrade system, good online racing and good amount of options to satisfy simracers and it can be like forza or gran turismo on pc but better. My only fear is that they dumb it down too far and take out options and features they don't need to to make it more casual and easier to approach.

And graphically it is still very nice !! So Îll be curious to see how works PC3. But I guess if we are ACC and iRacing, or even Automobilista fans, it is maybe not realistic enough
