Hi, Chris! I'm from Mexico City and I've recently discovered that I've been managing Design and Corporate Identity projects, without managing them on the whole extension. So I've lately pointed to introduce myself to the PM world in a more professional way, and nobody has explained me the path in a very suitable and comfortable way like you did on this brief and assertive tutorial. Now I realized that I actually love managing projects since I heard from you the greatness of a planning method. I wanted to share with you that you are a great communicator and an excellent teacher. Chris, this is a well articulated and brief summary with all the necessary points in it but I have found that this is not what is lacking in the market place. What I believe is the real value of a project manager is their specific experience in the project type itself. Understanding how long something takes or what is a risk in the real world compared to a theoretical risk that rarely ever eventuates. What are your thoughts on this?
@theChrisCroft7 жыл бұрын
well, the market place of 374,000 people seems to think it's worth seeing! But to answer your second point Gus, experience is the other very important part - you are right, there is no theoretical way to estimate a time, cost or risk, experience is required for that. So the trick is to pair up my process with your experience. Neither is the full story, well done for spotting that. And of course if you know my process you can then I hope get the other parts from your team.
@gusbisbal98037 жыл бұрын
I appreciated the video. It was good work. I was just wanting a little more on the total responsibility and skill set. Which you did answer, thank you.
@theChrisCroft7 жыл бұрын
I had one other thought: "specific experience in the project type itself". - I disagree, I think that's the whole point of delegating, in any context as well as PM. You use the expert skills of the people in the team, and the role of management is to bring this together and to make sure the process gets done correctly. It's all about process. The captain of the shop doesn't know how to cook the dinner or how to make a bed, and yet still, all is fine. So a good PM can run ANY project if they have a good team, know about Gantt charts, and can delegate. Which is great news!
@AshokKumar-oj2jb7 жыл бұрын
Just curious, what if the PM is the first person hired for a project. Where would the PM find (as you state above) 'expert skills of the people in the team' ? Because there is no team formed yet. I think, if I am in such situation, I would research on the web etc to find best estimate for time, cost and risk. Or how that lone PM on the project should proceed for important information of time, cost and risk ?

Great video! Are Gantt charts still updated and re-colored if you are using a tool like JIRA or TFS that shows the status of the tasks?
@theChrisCroft8 жыл бұрын
well they should be, but often they aren't! It's a massive waste to make a Gantt chart and then NOT keep it updated so you can track your progress - a task which takes 30 seconds a week and allows you to see the progress of any project in 10 seconds a week, but all too often the Gantt is abandoned once the project starts.

Time, Cost, Quality AND SCOPES are always forgotten. Meny Project are delivered within these three parameters but not meeting SCOPES = meaning not delivering what was needed.
@theChrisCroft8 жыл бұрын
yes I agree, you're spot on. For simplicity I've included Scope with Quality, because although they are different, they often overlap and become the same. For example, is the number of features in a software package scope or quality? When people come on my one-day training course we discuss this, but with only 8 minutes I had to simplify.

You can watch the videos that is related to the project management and after you complete the Video you can report it under informal learning on the CCR and if your reported claim choosing to be reviewed you need to upload a document with notes summarize what you have watched it for PMI team to review it. You can check this playlist this link: kzbin.info/aero/PLgSA-z5XLMJg-j_mVDs73t3UDcWNeJOvy and on the completion of this playlist you can claim 13 PDUs, This will refresh your memory if you are certified and will help you prepare for the PMP exam if you are not yet certified.

haha that is such a hilariously bad attempt at hiding an advert in a comment that I'm leaving it in, because it makes me laugh. 01:49 - "Brainstrom"?? - - "Breakdwon"?? Shouldn't being able to SPELL be a reasonably desired qualification for a Project Mangler?. . . . . . Ha, sorry... Manager?
@worldhappinessproject61134 жыл бұрын
oh yes - I never noticed that. Clearly they are typos rather than the inability to spell, but still, a bit of a shame. You know of course that videos can't be changed once they are uploaded, so that's how it will have to stay. Kind of good though, because it only annoys pedants, everyone else will be fine with it. Apart from that, did you think the video was useful and good?
@WJRHalyn-jw2ho4 жыл бұрын
@@worldhappinessproject6113 Ha! Not a pedant, just someone bemoaning the declining average complex literacy levels (average people still read but now about a 5th grade level instead of high school), and many comment threads that are barely intelligible gobbledegook. I've worked as an IT project manager (& years earlier as professional proofreader for magazines, pharmaceutical industry & technical) and found your video very helpful while indeed being effectively concise & clear. It would have been great to have seen back in '93... Semi-retired now, I make a range of videos myself... from fun stuff to paid small contractual productions, and scrutinize them very closely before putting any out there. The professional embarrassment would be too much; I know they're unfixable once "launched" into the social media sphere. (On a side note, there's a YT video documenting how a single typo in a launch sequence program crashed a huge multi-million dollar rocket moments after launch; accuracy really does count!) In closing, I usually only point out typos where the workmanship was otherwise highly professional and worthwhile quality, and where the gaffes can be noted to help improve future productions. As in your case. Over the years I've collected many thank-yous from high-level websites (which ARE fixable) where expensive, professional efforts were marred by one or more ridiculously embarrassing typos. They recognize that sloppy spelling starts bringing credibility down quickly; after all, if you can't spell, how accurate is the rest of your work going to be? Hillbilly spelling usually indicates hillbilly production quality. So when I see otherwise valid, high-grade work damaged by typos, I note it so they can either repair it (if it's a site) or use to enhance future efforts.
@worldhappinessproject61134 жыл бұрын
@@WJRHalyn-jw2ho yes I agree, typos are annoying, and illiteracy is a big sign of further quality, and typos usually do indicate illiteracy - just not in this case. So I agree. Don't start me on incorrect apostrophes! I don't trust anyone who has spelling mistakes in their emails. I wish it was possible to edit videos once they are on KZbin. PS this is Chris Croft here, I'm logged in as WHP which is my other project, and can't be bothered to log out and back in again just for this!

@@worldhappinessproject6113 ;-) Yes, I assumed you and WHP were connected. @theChrisCroft9 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! What's with the huge books?? To make money and look clever I guess. Why do people ask for PRINCE2 for PM jobs - because the interviewers have heard of PRINCE but don't really understand what it is, and what it isn't. It won't tell you HOW to run a project. If only I could change the world...

Thanks Chris. Im an MAPM who regarded P2 as the lesser of 2 evils. I was wrong. Using the PID to kick off real planning with a network diagram to critically path a credible Gantt is the best route toward a Business Case/justification "suite" which is schedule efficient and product-lite. Very impressed with how this was all communicated. Best wishes
