Great imformative video thank you so much l have owned my multi for 8 years it's just coming up on 30000 miles our local Ducati dealer wants £2000 that's about 2700 dollars approx to do the valve service no way I can afford that so this is great news I'm a mechanical engineer by trade having worked on aircraft for 50 years so it was only the service reset that was a problem . Spongy rear brakes on these bikes have always been a problem the trick is to raise the rear caliper above the level of the reservoir this will allow any trapped air to escape . I went one further and added a bleed nipple to the brake rear brake line where it meets the ABS unit it's solved all the braking problems . Again many thanks Stephen

stephen newton , poppycock, Mate. If you are an engineer, you've got 2,000 Pounds for a Service. The issue is whether it's fair to charge that much. And, I say it is not - your dealer is crooked. Therefore you should call them out for the thieves they are and do it yourself.

I wish I lived near someone like you. I don't believe I have the necessary tools or skills to do all the work you do but I would love to learn. I got a good deal on a 2012 Multi but it needs as much or more work done to it than yours does. And I don't want to spend tens of thousands bringing it back to life. It only has 22k miles on it but it was rode hard and put away wet every time it seems.

Congrats on the most detailed Multi full -strip-service-maintance. It takes a lot of time patience, tools and knowledge for all this. I did a quick shifter install on my 950 and it took me one week to do it. I basically had to get to the injectors, meaning I had to strip the whole bike. way more fairings and screws on the newer models.

Anyone who is removing the rear tire should consider service on the rear brake. The bleed screw is located on the bottom of the caliper requiring removal and inverting the caliper... Impossible to do with the tire on... A very good set of videos..

Those bolts on the sump I believe came from Ducati with the micro encapsulated red loctite from the factory, they also do that sometimes on bodywork bolts with a little 3mm hex head and something especially on Multistrada will damage the brass inserts in the plastic fuel tank, much fun after that, not sure why the factory do that but that's not the first time I've seen those bolt head stripped especially with age, with no fault of the owner.

@PracticalEnthusiast
@PracticalEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You're right, it's best not to let the calipers hang. Extremely important on cars, but less critical on bikes since the calipers are light and don't pull on the lines all that much.

Hi there. Firstly, thanks for a brilliant set of videos. During the brake and clutch bleeding I saw you using the conventional open/close method on the bleed nipples, which can be a real pain when working alone. Have you not tried using speed bleeders? Personally I think they’re the dogs bollocks. Well worth a look.

@@PracticalEnthusiast Many thanks, I can understand why most don't do it, as they are around $250 here in the UK, not certain Ducati even bother to change them on the Desmo?
@PracticalEnthusiast
@PracticalEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yikes, that's too much. I think I paid around $20 per gasket in the US, but then again mine isn't a DVT so perhaps that's the difference. I would doubt that the Ducati shop would change them out, and at that price, I wouldn't either until there was a leak.

Hi, Regarding the heated grips, these are the standard Ducati one, i have the same and i need to change the grips too. Do you mind telling me which sets of grip fits? Because the internal diameter of the grip needs to match the diameter of the heated component, and not the handle bar. Usually in a set of grips, you have one wider than the other to compensate for the throttle mechanism.
@PracticalEnthusiast
@PracticalEnthusiast 2 жыл бұрын
The grips I installed are made by ProGrip (model 699). They are generic motorcycle fit and not specific for Ducati heated handlebars. They were very tight to put on but it is possible as you can see in the video.

@PracticalEnthusiast
@PracticalEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
Edit: I just realized you said Monster. I thought you wrote Multistrada for some reason. The price is close to correct. I would think that bike should be in the $5k range. The lack of maintenance records is unfortunate, but honestly that's going to be the case with most used Ducatis.

Great videos. I would like to replace the rubber grips as well. Don't seem to be able to find any that will fit my 2013 Multi. It has the heated grips same as yours (I have replaced the heated pads a couple of times - not easy to un-stick the pads but a lot, a lot cheaper than buying a new set from Ducati). Any chance you can share where you got yours from?.
@PracticalEnthusiast
@PracticalEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
I picked the grips up from Cycle Gear, they are "Pro Grip" brand. I think they are somewhat a universal fit. They are extremely tight and take some force to install over the heated pads. But once installed they're great!

Hello again @Practical Enthusiast! I'm finding that I keep having more and more questions the further I dive into the bike. So thanks for answering them as best you can! Context: My bike is a 2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200 S and has been sitting for just over 3 years. Odometer 13,600 miles. The tachometer oil LED light is ON. First question: I need to change the oil in the bike and I noticed there was a sticker next to the oil cap that says "Use Only Shell Advanced Ultra 4." I purchased the same Motul synthetic oil that you used in your video and I just wanted to make sure that there wouldn't be any issues if I just drained out the old oil and replaced it with the Motul oil. Not sure if this would cause issues or If I should be alright. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Second question: With the possibility of doing the oil change myself. I noticed that you also changed/cleaned the oil filter net as well. I was curious if you knew how often and or if this needed to be changed. Given the context (see above) of my bike, I was curious about your opinion If I should change/clean the oil filter net? Or if I should be fine with just draining and replacing the oil (given question 1 isn't an issue). Thanks for all of your help!
@PracticalEnthusiast
@PracticalEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
You won't have any problems with using the Motul oil. Ducati puts the Shell Advance sticker on all their bikes and I'd wager most bikes old enough to no longer be serviced at the dealer never see that oil again. It will be fine! I would recommend that you pull out the strainer screen and give it a cleaning. It's possible it's never been removed before with the lower miles your bike has.
