Prokofiev absolutely WAS a great melodist, which is already evident in his first concerto. It's just that his melodies are often deliberately strange or grotesque and rarely adhere to cordial warmth and sensual dreaminess of Romanticism. He had a keen ear for original cadences and new intonations.

The melody of the middle section of the 3rd movement is among the most magical & satisfying melodies I’ve ever heard!

I can never get over Prokofiev's style, and this concerto encompasses everything I love about it. Going to see Isata Kanneh-Mason play it with the Toronto Symphony next year, and I'm very excited! Thanks for the upload, always reminding me I need to keep practicing so I can play this stuff myself

By the way, I recommend you to check out Mustonen's recording of this concerto (the other concerti are beatiful as well). I don't there's anyone else that paid that much attention to the details. The tempo he chose is also very interesting.

Mustonen is great, although his détaché type of playing is something that needs to get used to. Indeed, it creates a level of detail that's rarely heard in these concertos. I find this approach most successful in the 4th and 5th concertos.

Hate to be a hater, but this has to be one of the least energetic, sanitized and workmanlike performances I've ever heard of this concerto. What it lacks in passion it further degrades with clarity... if you don't mean what you say, at least blur the lines a bit!
