It can be difficult for sculptors to get the shape of the skull correct, but we can avoid a lot of mistakes by learning about the Loomis head! In this lesson you’ll learn about the importance of the Loomis method and how to construct a Loomis head by using simple forms and measuring landmarks. Without this method you might find yourself sculpting a skull improperly which can lead to an unintentionally askew face later on. If you enjoy this lesson check out the links below to learn more about it.

I really fancy this course & I'm tempted to buy some clay. I've dabbled in Loomis for my sketching, only half heartedly but it woked wonders.

@@AndrewJosephKeith Thanks for the reply. And by the way a wonderful Loomis head. I prefer to work with more hard clay and just for that i ask because i notice your clay have this hard looking saturation. Unfortunately, there is no Chavant clay here in Bulgaria.

This video was great - clear and helpful! I'd like to try and sculpt my own 'Asaro' head. Do you think the Loomis head is a good place to start, then add the more complex planes of the head? If anyone knows of a good tutorial similar to this, but for an Asaro head, please let me know! Thanks.

Great stuff, thank You! After learning 3D cad software last year I'm starting to think that sculpture is a really 3D art, not this hardware and cash demanding software showing isometric throw on monitor plane.. I will work on cheaper version, because hobby materials become pricey recently. Ivanevsky made model from led bulb, but he is a cartoonist, so proportions are diferent from start. All best!

@Funky Koval A suggestion is to try out "Blender" which is open-source idealist version of Autodesk's different programs (It's a jack of all trades but digital sculpting is one of them). There are tons of tutorials & some of them might give you some nice to have add-on's that make the sculpting easier. Such as a better optimized Dynamesh; Projected geometry which basically gives you more or less detail to sculpt with. Worth mentioning is that the industry standard in CGI & games has & still is "Zbrush" but it's a very hefty investment with a bit of an uncertain future as it recently got bought up by Moxon who does not have the best reputation. Good luck mate! ^^ Edit; typo

We put this on the main channel because even if a lot of students don't want to take up figure sculpting, they may want to make this sculpture to help them with drawing. We've received a lot of comments in the past asking Stan how to make a loomis head for reference and this video covers that. The video is also in the proko3d sculpting playlist.

There's so much geometry involved in this. Pretty hard to follow unless you have mastered geometry. And it's really hard to see the clay as you're working. Lighting is not great. Disappointing.
