This is supposed to be a sci-fi movie, not a horror movie. The problem is that this is supposed to be a trillion dollar scientific expedition to an unknown world, not a bunch of idiots on a camping trip in the woods. Why would Weyland's first reaction be to put an unknown life form inside a crew member, potentially endangering everyone on board? A person with any brain at all would want the things STUDIED to see what effects it has on human tissue....this movie didn't know what it wanted to be.

Just because it sounds smart and just because it asks questions for you to figure out for yourself doesn't make it a good movie. This is the most anti-climactic movie ever. I'm sorry but anyone who hasn't seen ALIEN will need to see it before watching Prometheus to gain some kind of sense of what the hell is going on. Ridley Scott constantly said "It's a stand alone movie" it's not. If it was a stand alone movie then I wouldn't rely on a sequel to give me the answers to the Qs given at the end

So, just what was the opening scene about? My first take was that it was pre-human Earth and an Engineer takes some "poison" that breaks up his DNA and kills him (sacrifices himself to create). His DNA (somehow) helps start the human race. Secondly, if the same symbols turn up in five completely separate cultures, that implies that there were multiple visits by the Engineers or that one was alive during those ages visiting those cultures (unless he created the artworks himself). Thoughts?

Also, for example, in one scene they find lots of dead bodies with holes in their chests...but never any alien remains, so where did those creatures go? I like that the movie leaves you wanting to talk about it, but it had a ton of unexplained things. I didn't even understand the first scenes...he commits suicide why?

Why would this film make you think of your own death? Was it the concepts of the film or the things that happen in it? (I saw the film too and am VERY curious as to why you found it disturbing, the way you did.)

I agree, Ridley Scott made a good movie, it stands on its own. I also like the fact that the aliens are a biological weapon. I cant see a planet of these creatures as cool as they look... They have more instinct that brains. Cant wait for Prometheus 2. I just hope they done reboot the alien franchise.

The Xeno at the end had an umbilical cord with an alien egg attached to it. When the egg hatches the facehugger inside will not sense any other alien presence, and so will release a queen egg. That's what happened in Alien 3

That would make sense, but I remember the ship they found had crashed as well...so unless multiple ships crashed, it wouldn't really make sense. Also, some people were saying the engineers were trying to whipe out the humans to avoid the Predators using them as hosts for aliens or some crazy thing, but it's still not explained why they would test biological weapons which got out of hand on another planet of humans...

Okay, check this out: in Alien, they find the dead space jockey or "engineer" sitting by the "cannon" or "observatory controls". How come he was found sitting there in Alien if in this prequel he died after being caught by the alien octopus? It would only make sense if he had died because of the crash, right?

The disappointment with Shaw and Holloway was mainly because they wanted to meet and talk to their makers, and had been wanting to for ages, that was the reason they became archaelogists and had been researching the Engineers, or searching proof (they were the ones that fought to have Weyland fund their dream, or at least take them on board on his expedition), they weren't there just to meet an alien lifeform. There's even that "viral" ad on YT where Shaw is contacting Yutani Corp to fund them.

I believe one of the theories goes like this... The engineers (space jockeys) weapons of mass destruction were contained in the vases as the captain (Idris Elba) call them and were cargo on their ships in cases they needed to be used to terraform other inhabitable planets but there was an outbreak before the WMD could ever be used and humans helped spawn Aliens.

My guess was that the big question was a distraction. The David character had something going on that he wouldn't let anyone else in on and he seemed to know too much. He opened doors in the caverns when he shouldn't, infected Holloway with that black goo (pool table scene, he puts his finger into Holloway's drink before serving it). Also they tried to contact Earth three times with no success. Had something happened there?

I wud hav hoped the BluRay release of the film wud open up more things for fans espeically, and maybe change thier views of the film sumwhat, having more understand behind it. Ridley even said, u gotta try new things, dare to try and explain our origins, even if it upsets some people.

Liked to throw out some ideas about this sneaky movie. The crew tried to make contact with Earth three times (twice in space, once on the moon) and could never get through. Had Earth been destroyed already? The bad choices the crew made (taking off helmets, messing with the snake) happened shortly after the crew drank something David gave them. What did David do during those 2 years the crew slept? He seemed to know more than he let on to. What were the hollow-grams running from?

As a matter of fact, David is sabotaging the mission before he puts the poison in the doctor's drink by activating one of the bio-weapon vases and leaving it to gestate in the room with all the phials. It was the very first thing he did as soon as he got the doors to that room open. So, you see, he was acting from the start to sabotage the mission as we imagine at the time under company orders, but analysis after the fact shows the company had no idea about any of that. David just does it. Nuts!

I think the only reason people think that is unrealistic behavior is because of the atmosphere of the scene. Ridley Scott made the scene scary by adding scary music making, the cinematography dark, and the entire mood was scary so people were expecting something to happen but there was no reason for the scientist to believe that he would die. Its like shouting "Don't open the door there's a killer in the house" to the screen of a horror movie but the character has no idea.

but I do think maybe the actual dialogue in many parts of the script cud hav been more polished. I think the main problems especially with cast was that they were all familiar with the director, and the work, they expected straight away that it wud b a big success becus of the series. With Alien it was made at a time where there was alot of originiallity, and the actors bk then were all mostly unknown, and didnt know or expect what they had become part of, with that film becming so big.

This film was never supposed to be simply about the characters. Much like the original Alien wasn't about it's characters. It's about the grander scheme and how the people that are in the film are just players in it. The backstory/ origin of those "goofy looking" aliens (that we look very similar to) is very significant as it sets the motive for the whole film and was Scott's intention in the first place as to build a world around.

3 things urk me about this movie how the hell did the Engineer aka the Space Jokey end up dead in the control deck of the Engineer's ship when it dies in an escape pod some good 100 -300 meters away? Why didn't anyone notice the escape pod that is suppose to be right next to the ship that had the deceased engineer and Trilobyte. Also how the f-k did the Ultramorph create more of it's kind on a deserted planet that has no life on it and how did it get out of the pod & into the Engineer ship?

Outstanding!!! That was my take on it. Humans weren't invited. They were warned to stay away. Based on the reaction of the "super being", they didn't want us in space. My biggest puzzle was David 8. Well I think thats true. The thing is the following: This was a movie, said to "Ask the difficult questions" and "to have a very rich mythology around it". I think it was a relatively decent film but in my view it didn't push boundaries and it wasn't edgy. Her performance was ambiguous regarding her origin but why is that so important outside of the movie? It makes you think when you are interested in her as a character but not outside of the movie.

The question that will never be answered is how the journey to the darkest corner of the universe only took two years when the nearest galaxy to ours (Andromeda) is 2 million plus light years away never mind the darkest corner of the universe. The other major flaw is that all this took place a mere 80 years in the future and technology would not be able to conquer those distances in that near a future.

That's totally understandable, nostalgia is a powerful thing, I geeked out also at all the references like the Space Jockey and how a Xenomorph got made. I just didn't really care for the characters as much as in Alien/Aliens, they barely interacted with each other as a team but Fassbender and Noomi Rapace were great.

Some things David can't do just because, like disobeying humans, the movie says so; yet there he is opening phials of poison despite the lead scientists telling him not to touch anything BEFOREHAND, which indicates an overriding command (from weyland). The movie wants you to think that he's acting on his own or that he's being overridden to sabotage the mission, they leave both possibilities open (sort of) until after the fact you realize neither is applicable. Production is playing both angles.

Headcanon here...maybe the Alien-esque thing at the end ends up taking another ship off the planet loaded with the weird bioweapon...the bioweapon gets out, evolves into a facehugger, gets to the Alien esque thing, implants the egg in it, then the Alien repilots the ship, getting surrounded by that weird space suit thing and the queen chestburster blasts through the suit and the ship crashes on LV426....the queen lays the eggs, then dies and voila, you have the setup for Alien! So far-fetched...

I saw Prometheus last night and i found it a very interesting and visually arresting film, with the hallmarks of a Ridley Scott SF film. It was bold and ambitious, but it failed to reach it's full potential. The film left many questions it raised unaswered and the motivations of some characters were unclear, but it wasn't as bewildering as some people make it out to be, i understood it. It had good performances from Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba and Charlize Theron.

Wish films could do that to me still. In a way, a film moving you like that is something to be respected. And I noticed you're talking about the psychological/plot parts, and not the gore/horror. If it had that effect on me, it would have made this a very memorable film for me. (I still give it a 7.9). Last time a film did that to me was Requiem for a Dream, which I've seen once and will only ever see once, but cherish it as a powerful film.

(Part 4) You are also correct about most (maybe all) movies containing errors, and from a production standpoint it is practically impossible to make a film without errors. That said there are different levels of mistakes. Continuity errors tend to be smaller, like a shirt being buttoned and in the next cut it being open, or movement of props in the background. These elements can undermine a viewers verisimilitude, but are forgiveable (unless you see a wristwatch on a roman soldier, yikes!).

I totally understand this movie. The alien in the opening scene was some sort of rebel Ghandi type figure or criminal, doesn't matter, who was marooned on earth for his actions and or beliefs. The thing he drank dispersed his dna and triggered human evolution which may have been all part of his plan. The other aliens found out and engineered a the monster that killed the last alien from the tiny snake alien thing to wipe us out either out hatred for the "creator" or some kind of alien hubris.

I see Prometheus like this, that the first people to discover such things were maybe not always ur keen explorers, it is usually random and unexpected people that accidently make great discoveries. And the Prometheus crew were certainly very random, mostly indiividuals who were not really concerned at the bigger picture of man's greatest discoveries. The clues and things in the film hint at a bigger picture, sumthing that played out way before our time. Like wen Pyramids were first discovered.

(cont.) Lastly Charlize's character was not even hinted at being an robot, and just joke about using Elba's character as simple comic relief and a showing that Charlize was not a stone faced character. She was clearly Peter Weyland's daughter and the fact that he acknowledge David an actual android more than his flesh and blood was a stark revelation to Charlize's character motives in the film. The fact that you missed that shows that you weren't looking for a narrative just mindless horror.

I got the impression that this might have been a 3 hour movie, but Fox Studios wouldn't go on a film that long. At 2+ hours it moved surprisingly fast. The more I thought about it afterwards, the more I liked it. What I had felt were plot holes weren't if you take a different look at it. Perhaps it was not an invitation, but a warning to stay away. Maybe mankind wasn't supposed to travel into space. The "super being"'s reaction then makes sense. I plan to see it again this time in 3D.

It's difficult not to take Prometheus as a prequel when it borrows so many elements of Alien. Example being there was only a single survivor, the face hugger (not exactly the same as alien but very similar) , and most important of all there was a XENOMORPH right at the end of the movie

Oh and this is the last thing I'll say about the ME3 ending: it ruined the ENTIRE series for me and many others, and leading up to the third game, it was my favorite series of all time. Plot holes and unsatisfactory resolutions (or the lack thereof of resolutions) can completely ruin a great story. The big problem with Prometheus is I practically didn't know what anyone was really trying to solve.

Just wanted to add a second note. Ridley Scott is a very meticulous film maker. So he wouldn't have gotten sloppy with the dialog or the choices the characters make. Some reckless behavior by the crew could be due to their excitement discoveries made. I saw it in 2D because all of 3D was sold out for the entire day. Going back to pick up plot points and see the enhanced visuals in IMAX. Great review.

Each to his own mate, I know that as an alien fan this didn't live up to what I wanted in atmosphere, it really didn't.

Ill send it again. Remember though, I was the one who insisted that we don't debate this, you were the one who wanted this.

Under a large enough microscope every single film falls apart. If you liked the film coming out of it that means it was good storytelling since you didnt notice the flaws. Realizing a film is bad after thought is no way to be a viewer. Example; Citizen Kane: No one hears Charles Foster Kane say Rosebud, the maid comes in after he dies, and yet the whole movie is about trying to figure out what his last word meant. Its still considered the greatest movie ever made.

It was the concept of thinking that another species of human beings created us and with the old man seeking help from them so he could live forever. And also the way the people died like the boyfriend.
