They way how you pronounce the short "u" alone is totally different with the way you pronounce it in a word.

SHORT O is short but it is a little bit LONG in terms of duration compared with SHORT U. Interesting! Some of the Americans totally confuse [ɔ] with [ɑ], or think they are the same, like what happens in this video. You girls pronounce [ɔ] in "AW" "olive" "dog" "cot" "caught" "taught" "long" "also" "ought" "boss(girl on the left)" "hog(girl on the right)".... However, you pronounce [ɑ] in "drop" "stop" "common" "father" "want" "poppy" "soccer" "boss(girl on the right)" "hog(girl on the left)" .... You don't realize there are two different vowel sounds - [ɔ] and [ɑ] - in the first AW sound that you teach. What confusion! Is "Short U" really short? It is only short when you make it short on purpose, especially when it is compared with "short O"(10:00 10:17 10:26 10:42). It is not short at all, or it is a bit long at 6:16(dug/pic.) 7:14(puppy) 7:32(bus) 7:38(hug/pic.) 8:22(hug) 9:10(luck) 9:23(dug) 9:33(dumb) 9:34(bus/pic.) 9:51(bus~)...

@@ExtraEnglishPractice sorry I just don't get why you spell "a" where you are clearly pronouncing a short "o". Even in IPA phonemes "hog" is represented as "hɒg".
@ExtraEnglishPractice
@ExtraEnglishPractice 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see. I think the problem is that the IPA is not as international as one would hope. There's variety in which symbols are used and how they are used.

I believe you two are pronouncing this as /ɑ/ and not /a/. Perhaps someone more expert at the International Phonetic Alphabet can confirm or correct.

Yes, there can be differences in IPA symbols. In our particular English accent, we do not differentiate between these two sounds.
