If you look like a female I will address you as such, if you look like a male I will address you as such. BUT if you correct me and say, "I would like to be addressed as..." then I will gladly correct myself. But it is not my responsibility to somehow figure out what you want to be called, especially if I don't know you. For example some of the people in this video were clearly male, but were wearing female clothing or lipstick etc. (Items that are worn mostly by women) I am now confused on what to address you as and IT IS NOT MY FAULT. You have no right to be angry, just as I have no right to judge. Politely explain to me what you wish to be called and it shall be that way. and to the woman at the end with the "actually guilty of sexual harassment". fuck off. That is the most ass backwards thing I have ever heard. "I am not sure what gender you are so I will take my best guess and if I am wrong it is sexual harassment" I think not.

+UnoMeeh if you replay the video from 3:09, they are referring specifically to people who "persistently misgender" others. they are not referring to those who do so by accident. sexual harassment may be defined in the way that you did, or simply by "the harassment of a person due to their sex"; in this case, persistently misgendering a transgender person because of their biological sex (or more specifically, because their biological sex does not "match up" with their gender) can fall under this category.

To all the folks getting up in arms about the sexual harassment comment: In a workplace environment, if there is a trans employee you haven't met before and you guess their pronouns incorrectly, and then you are informed what their correct pronouns are, and then you start using those pronouns, everything is A-OKAY. But if you CONTINUE to use the person's incorrect pronouns (not occasional slip-ups. Persistent use), even after being corrected, you are being careless and disrespectful and yes, it is harassment.

Compelled speech is becoming more and more common; in some countries, it is even a criminally punishable offense to opt out of such. But this is a violation of religious freedom. The existence of gender separate from the physical body is not a proven fact. It is entirely subjective. Thus, it is part of religious belief. No one should be forced to engage in this.

This while argument is silly for two reasons. One, no one uses someone's in their presence. Gendered pronouns are only used in the third person, i.e. when you're talking about someone to a third person. Otherwise the word "you" is used, or the person's given name. Two, pronouns are a way for the speaker, and only the speaker, to classify people according to how the appear, either more masculine or feminine. Using he or she isn't a personal insult but rather an expression of how the speaker believes someone appears. Literally no reason to be upset or offended by this. Also that last person that said using the wrong pronouns is akin to workplace sexual harrassment, I don't know if people have actually been prosecuted for this or not but it's total BS. Sexual harrassment is when someone makes a repeated sexual "advance" toward another person when it's been told to the harrasser that it's unwanted. "Misgendering" someone is obviously not a sexual advance. In fact it's likely the opposite, i.e. the person would rather jump off a bridge than sleep with you. So clearly not sexual harrassment. Now repeatedly, purposefully, using the wrong pronouns when referring to someone makes you a jerk, but it's nothing more than that. Last time I checked being a jerk isn't illegal.

I worked for Amazon briefly. They actually had buttons with preferred pronouns on them. In some ways I felt it was positive because it removed any chance of accidentally misgendering someone. But in other ways I felt it was detrimental because people were literally wearing a sign to describe themselves. It feels like we're just creating more and more labels to separate ourselves from each other. I always try to respect people's decisions about their own bodies. I do find it hard to tell if someone is a they them or one of the many other pronouns without either asking them, which feels awkward, or having someone tell me. It's a hard line to walk. Also what do I do if someone identifies is female one day and male the next day? Do I make assumptions based off the way they dress? Do I ask them everyday which pronoun I should use? I'm being serious when asking these questions. I never want to cause harm to anyone. I do feel anxious in these situations though bc I feel if I get something wrong I could loose my job or be blasted on social media bc I was not made aware of someone's gender pronouns. I also feel it is not fair to judge a book by its cover. Just bc someone is wearing makeup doesn't mean they identify as female. Just bc someone is wearing a short haircut doesn't mean they identify as male. Do I just stop using gendered pronouns? Is it fair to ask someone to explain themselves several times a day to everyone they interact with? I really feel that most ppl want to respect others but it's getting harder to do that without making someone feel singled out or confused.
@sugonmad24022 жыл бұрын
You do not have to fear misgendering someone. Being online makes the whole debate out to be so overblown. On one hand people get super offended by things they would probably not have the courage to stand up for offline. On the other hand people make it seem like you can't say anything anymore and as soon as you do something wrong, you get fired or thrown in jail. Transgender people who don't pass know they don't, they aren't delusional. So if you call them by their wrong pronouns most will probably expect it. If they correct you, just try your best to gender them correctly. As long you take them for full and respect their identity nobody will have ANY problem, trust me. The legal problems in a job mostly arise, because people purposefully misgender someone and then tell them they are wrong/ reality bending/ stupid, when being corrected. In the end pronouns aren't really labels, they are more like a tool, if you feel gendered pronouns are restricting just call everyone they, since the English language gladly has that feature. Labels are more like calling yourself a trans man or gay or whatever.
@chellya20042 жыл бұрын
This is a great question but I feel sad no one (few) is here to reply you :/ i dont have an answer for you myself.
@MayW15663 Жыл бұрын
I believe these are valid questions, but where you’re coming from misses the purpose, and a lot of your fears are exaggerated. People do not create labels for the sole purpose of separating themselves from each other. The way anyone presents and wants to be addressed reflects their internal sense of identity. It’s understandably difficult to know someone’s pronouns without asking, and most people who do use pronouns other than the binary he/she to my knowledge do not expect people to know their exact pronouns. A good compromise is to just use gender neutral they/them for everyone until told otherwise. If someone does express that they want you to use different pronouns, then just be respectful. But they will tell you. As a Trans person, trust me when I say nobody will be upset if you’re respectful and are willing to learn. I hope this helps.

You don't really do that. If you saw a passing trans person, you wouldn't call them by their assigned birth gender, because you don't have X-Ray-vision. And even that body can be changed or its characteristics hidden. You might say you refer to someone based on their biology, but pronouns have nothing to do with biology, since they are social and even if you were a doctor, you couldn't have insight into every tiny part of their body.

Gender roles are a societal concept. They aren't real. Your voice does not change how you see yourself. And that's what makes you yourself, no one on the outside can ever truly know who you are. So if someone, regardless of how they look, speak, walk, or dress, feels to themselves a "he" or "she" or "them" then that's what I am going to refer to them as. It's not my job to dictate who a person is. But it is my job to respect who a person is. As someone who has been bullied and hurt by people who weren't aware of how they were bullying or hurting me, I go out of my way to become aware of how I can not only not hurt someone, but how I can make that person feel more accepted, more comfortable, and more loved.

+Jack Montoya Exactly. Just because something is a social concept/construct doesn't mean it has no impact. Just because it's 'social' doesn't mean it's not 'real'. The economy is a social construct, yet it impacts everyone. University and higher education in general is a social construct, yet every day people are judged based on whether they had that opportunity or not. Race is a social construct, but the system of oppression known as racism still cuts people down every single day. Gender is a mish-mash of self concept and social concept, but whether you respect it or not has a huge real-life impact.

We have so much issue with this and we're dealing with English, which hangs much less on gender then the other Western languages. German and French assign gender to EVERYTHING. Folks going through this deserve the same respect as anyone else. People going through this should not believe that everyone they encounter somehow know their very personal story. If they are getting called the "wrong" pronoun in general society, out and about, then they are doing a poor job as presenting as their chosen gender. That is on them. That does not mean those that very well know the person and are purposely using the "wrong" pronoun to make a statement, belittle the person, or in general be an ass. That is a different story altogether. There are parts of everyone that don't fit "polite" society's little box. Some of us have it a bit more out in the open then others. Don't expect every person you pass on the street to know enough about you individually to treat you perfectly. All they know about you is what they see, your preferences can't be seen. So like anyone, take care in how you present yourself, whether you're trans or not. A person's choices in how they present themselves goes a long way.

@evil_regal9 жыл бұрын
Most transgendered never go for the surgery, or hormone treatment. As far as money for clothes; everyone spends money on clothes, whether you by a dress for $35 or jeans and collared shirt for $35, it still $35, so that's a bad argument. The way a person does their hair costs nothing to very little. And makeup is variable by choice too. These things are choices that every person makes whether they are transgendered or not. Those that are transgendered just need a little more skill and practice to pull off the look they are going for. Most "pass" without medical intervention.
@segamai9 жыл бұрын
Chantell Scherer The fact that you decide if they are worth being called the correct pronouns on wether they pass or not shows how incredibly ignorant you are. Being transgender is not validated on how much you pass for one gender OR the other, that's extremely limiting and erases many other people that are on the spectrum; non-op or pre-op people, hermaphrodites, genderqueer and genderfluid individuals, etc. You clearly didn't care about that when you watched the video either, because they showed more than one person who mentioned using multiple pronouns or "they".

I mean in the end it seems like nobody is accepting of other points of view, no matter how they feel on the topic being discussed. Cis people who are confused: think of asking for pronouns like asking for someone's name. In fact, they can be done in the same breath. You wouldn't assume you know someone's name before you meet them, and you wouldn't know their pronouns until you meet them either. It's not quite on the same level, but being misgendered is somewhat similar to me insisting someone's name is Bob when that person's name is Steve.
@xxSammxxxx9 жыл бұрын
Cool I am so happy to use correct pronouns and make anyone I interact with feel comfortable. I am definitely an ally as much as I can be. However, as someone who is very socially anxious I would never ask someone for a preferred pronoun like I ask their name. The reason isn't because I am uncomfortable with trans people, it is because it would feel like I was outing them if they didn't want others to know they were trans or I would be afraid to offend them if they weren't trans and they just like to dress non-conventionally for their gender. I am genuinely scouring these comments to try and find a solution to this problem because as I mentioned, I really would hate to make someone uncomfortable. I would probably just avoid using pronouns if I was unsure. Is there a delicate way to ask??
@cool93789 жыл бұрын
I definitely recommend offering yours first when you introduce yourself. "My name is Samantha and my pronouns are [pronouns]." If the person you meet doesn't understand, they might just give you a funny look and move on. If someone isn't comfortable being out they'll let you know. And I recommend practicing this with everyone, because you can never know someone's pronouns and gender just by looking at them. And just to clarify, I'm cis, and I'm not purporting to speak on the behalf of trans or gender non-conforming people. This is just something I've learned over the years.
@1608Nikolai9 жыл бұрын
Cool I get your point, but it isn't the same is it? If i saw many of the people in this video, i would assume they were men, some of them have beards. And, if i am being blunt, they were born male, that happened, just because you feel like a female, which i completely respect, doesn't mean that anybody should assume that any person they meet could identify as a female. My girlfriend is half black half white and she gets people asking if shes indian or mexican, is that not the same? I don't see any video for people who are misracialled (made it up. I understand and completely support these people, but at the same time how can you blame anyone for seeing someone who looks like a man, as a man.
@cool93789 жыл бұрын
Brian Peppers That's like me seeing you and saying, "You look just like my cousin Susan. I'm going to call you Susan." "Looking like a man" is a culturally-based perception, it's not based in reality. I could wear clothing of a gender to which I don't belong, but I would still be my gender. My point being, don't assume anything and you will be respectful to anyone. It takes about three seconds to say "These are my pronouns, what are yours?"
@1608Nikolai9 жыл бұрын
Cool If you think that is the same then you have a warped idea of reality. It isn't a culturally based perception, you can tell the people in the video, who are dressed and trying to be women, were born men! That has no bases on what they are wearing! I will call someone whatever pronoun they want me to, but to think people should go around watching there pronouns because someone might be trans, thats completely unreasonable.

My word is reputation. I am genderfluid and I don't care what you call me, because I'm good with both, and it is honestly a good way to see what people think of you, and how they see you. I remember when I was younger I would mess up a lot on pronouns, not intentionally but I just would. As I grew older I fixed the problem. However, I do recall getting my eyes rolled at and people getting super annoyed when I would mess up. I think it's important to understand that everyone is in different levels of grasping these concepts. Patience is key and being tolerant all around can help a ton.

2:19 is he a man or a woman? I'm confused, he was a woman and changed his gender to a man or he is still trying to change his body? Man, that's a messed up life!

If your a male and want to be female or vice versa. That’s the fact. Just because you want to be something or gender your not, does not mean I have to play along. Human nature will alway state the obvious. No matter how “normal” I act... I will alway be called Black, or Abo or criminal. Nothing I can do will stop people being racist. So if you have a gender issue, join to crew. People Will alway judge you .

I always use the pronouns I know people prefer. Sometimes however it is very hard to tell what gender a person is portraying themselves as. So it is tricky when some trangender individuals take great offense or even call it sexual harassment when there really was no malintent :/ Some people just naturally look like the opposite gender without identifying like one...
