But I just realized that I’m 15 years old and I get to be openly gay without people questioning if I’m really sure about it (and we’re not even talking about all the straight cis ppl who got to do that since their BIRTH). So if I’m open to live a gay live, why wouldn’t trans teens be allowed to live their live as the gender they identify with?

I think they're not ignoring the dysphoria factor; at least I'm not. I do feel pretty fucking dysphoric and passing alleviates that immensely, but the thing is: where does dysphoria comes from? I doubt that the right answer is a completely medical one. My dysphoria makes me feel like shit for not looking (and being) a "real man", but who says being a trans man is not being a real man? My very own existence defies that notion! I'm a guy despite what my body looks like, despite what people tell me I am. And passing, at least in my understanding, is just looking cisgender - which is society's notion of a "real man". I don't want to conform to that because *I know* I'm not less of a man for having a high-pitched voice or a "feminine face";I know men like me are men, and I want that notion to be more mainstream, I want people to not see me as less of a men because I'm not cis - and passing ain't gonna help me with that. In this context, passing is conforming, agreeing with society's notion that trans men aren't real men. I wanna be seen for who I am and without having to choose between looking like a man and not looking like myself.
@KL-zq1dq4 жыл бұрын
passing is about social acceptance. dysphoria is about how our internal and external forms relate. of course, our bodies are always in conversation with the world around us. its a privilege to pass because one does not have to deal with the negative impacts of being understood by the outside world as trans, which may alleviate dysphoria. we can also feel euphoria about our non-binary gender without passing :)

I'm not the first to say this, but when trans women talk about passing, we're not just talking about looking like cis women in some abstract way, we're talking about passing a brutally violent, nearly impossible rigorous test that literally never ends. We're talking about being allowed to pass through public space and take part in social interactions without having our humanity refuted, interrogated or held under suspicion because of the lies projected onto our bodies. We're talking about being casually, thoughtlessly expected to compress, conceal, remove, reshape and constantly monitor countless aspects of our physical appearance, countenance, comportment and voice (seemingly every last detail of all self-expression) to an utter extreme, just for the hope that we can literally mind our own business. These expectations go well beyond those held for cis women and virtually none if literally any of us pass 100% of the time, which the cost of failing this test is immediate, repeated, indefinite, and ranges from simple social alienation and rejection to full out physical violence and death. Never forget who is administering this test, and don't blame us for trying to pass when our safety literally depends on it.

Sex - determined by what reproductive parts you've been assigned at birth. These are, decidedly, binary. Gender - what you identify as i.e., male/female. You can also refuse to conform to the binary gender identity system. Cisgender: Your sex matches your gender identity. (Fe)male parts - (Fe)male gender identity. A large population of the world is cisgendered. Transgender: Your sex does NOT match your gender identity. Fe(male) parts - whatever you identify as. "Passing", correct me if I'm wrong, is to be discernibly appear as male/female to other people - whether that is in line with your sex/gender. Passing is a problematic concept because it 1) Perpetuates a standard/(s) of appearance for either genders. 2) Does not recognise those people who do not conform to a gender-binary. 3) Discriminatory, imo, against those who cannot be able to transition (as yet) and still want to be themselves and be treated as the gender they identify with, rather than what they appear/"pass" as. 4) Passing is "cis-privilege" because not passing means being recognized as a trans person and facing potential harrassment, violence, humiliation etc. To conform to "pass" means to become complicit, in some sense, in the discrimination against trans people. That's what I got from the video.

I am pretty sure you got that right. also there is more then two physical sexes, it's called "intersex" I believe. it is very rare those.
@EJ-jc2oj8 жыл бұрын
it exists so how could it not be an "actual" sex? yes, these people have to choose a gender/ are assigned to one, but they are not necissarily that gender forever or in their hearts. It is a fault in our society. i mean, that's the same "issue" as trans then, you have the "other genders" sex. also i agree, some trans people are definitly female or male. i think we are still refering to different things here, seeing that you probably mean sex (which can be changed) and i mean gender (which is a social construct, and thus decided by you and only you) i would also ask you not to refer to someones sex/ physical (or even mental) features as a "defect" it sounds very offensive *****
@EJ-jc2oj8 жыл бұрын
***** the first result if you google the term "gender" is: "gender ˈdʒɛndə/ noun noun: gender; plural noun: genders 1. the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones)." it clearly definies gender as a social construct, that can however still include ones sex. so that is why some trans people feel they have to have their sex changed. however lots of them just have secondary features changed or undergo hormone therapy, because they feel better like that or for society to except them as their gender. and you are not the one paying for it, if that were the case there wouldnt be so many people asking for money online (for example in funds) to pay for surgery etc this is not only about bathrooms. our society sadly tells us how a man and a woman are supposed to look and behave, but that does not make any sense. there is a spectrum of genders and every person is an individual, thus making their behaviour and looks just as individual and not able to be catagoriesed. some trans people still feel better with surgery and that is their right

This is indeed coming from a cisgender boy who supports the LGBTQ community and hopes for full equality one day. Really appreciate these videos from Cut. They are potentially educating the audience that needs to be aware most of these issues and no matter the hate received please continue to put out this content. It is truly enlightening and important. However, something is to be said about the tone used when the cisgender population is discussed about in this video (at 3:16 calling them "feeble minded"). I initially felt offended. I was hurt that I was being generalized as a group that hates so heavily on individual freedom. While I am not denying the fact that there are a lot of Bigot cisgenders and angry uneducated people out there who will use an even more harsh tone with the word "transgender/sexual" than they do with "cis", is it beneficial for the community that is oppressed to fight fire with fire? Now I rapidly realized that this was not a matter of terrible people representing the trans community. Rather this was an outcry of anger that seems to be the only thing some people take away from this video because it personally offends them. We have oppressed these groups for years and it is unfair that some people will only take away that "they hate us how I hate them" mentality from hearing the anger, instead of realizing that "us" is the group that is angering these souls. It really does not speaks a lot about the people in this video, but about how heavy the oppression has affected them. I doubt any of them would be as angry and upset if they didn't suffer from this extensive discrimination and that is something a lot of people should take away. Hopefully this sparks some discussion that can help those who haven't realized what they go through. Keep fighting and I hope for this group to reach equality.

I don't feel the need to create that divide and patronise - at times, bully - cis people when we're all striving for equality. We need cis people to be on our side if we want acceptance, and the vast majority of my friends are cisgender and totally accepting of the trans community. I think when I see trans people talking shit about "the cis" as if they're some foreign group of bigots instead of, y'know, our friends/family/99.99% of society, it's just kinda saddening. Silver Not always. I’ve lived in places that are very accepting of gender identities and don’t care if you “pass.” Harsh truth: you don’t get to decide someone else’s gender.

Silver Some people cannot physically “pass,” whether it be due to intense body hair growth rates in trans women or large breasts in trans men. Likewise, for some of us, we don’t have immediate access to hormones. I’m lucky that I do, and that I get to start hormones in a month, but a lot of us just don’t have access like that.

I'm very glad to hear from the nonbinary person at 1:28, because that's exactly how i feel about it, being agender. You don't get to "pass" as your gender when you're nonbinary. You can pass as a DIFFERENT gender than what people would normally percieve, but it's also passing as a different gender from who you are. If you try to go out representing your gender, there is no passing as that. People will always ask questions, or you will always have to explain yourself, because people will always see you as one of two things. Sometimes, at least just speaking for myself, it can feel nice to be mistaken as a different gender - but it's not yours, its what people perceive as the "opposite" gender of what you were assigned at birth. It's still wrong, and it's still..painful.

This is a little mixed for me. When they said outdated here 2:18 I get that it's outdated for all of them who are educated on gender roles, binaries, and identities, but many people, in fact, the *MAJORITY OF PEOPLE* are still catching up! There is still a lot of progress to be made on educating people on what it means to break these stereotypes, and you can't just look down on them because all they think is you have to *pass* as either a man or a woman! Give them some grace and don't let other's judgements of you make you feel less great than you are! We never understand people's personalities to begin with, so there needs to be a lot more patience with people understanding something that's just becoming mainstream. I just felt this video came from a pious place and I needed to say this!

Quick reminder that being fine with your assigned gender is OK too! I was iffy about their reference to cis people having tiny minds. There are certainly cis people who undertand the idea of gender identity but simply don't find the need to transition or want any different pronouns or anything. Whithin the choices of trans, non binary, cis, etc, there is no better or worse identity, just identities. It's who you are.

isn't the point of being trans to pass and live their life as the gender that they are. I understand not being able to pass, but most of those people want to pass. maybe not to society but at least to themselves. Im pre testosterone and I pass 100% and im happy that I look masculine enough and that im young enough to do that. Passing isn't a terrible problematic thing, its honestly just a word that means you look cis. and that's what most trans people strive for anyway. its not that they hate being trans, they just dont want it to be the first thing people notice or the center of their lives.

I wish I could ignore how other people see me too. I'm trans ftm and pre everything. Very occasionally I pass as a male but most of the time I don't. Literally today my dad told me I don't need to focus on passing because then I'm not focusing on myself, I'm focusing on other people. Well it's kind of hard trying to focus on getting myself to a comfortable position when everybody around me (apart from a select few) keep misgendering me. I had an accident the other day in the supermarket and nearly broke my finger and the attendant that came to help me (because the pain was nearly making me pass out) kept saying things when people tried to talk to her like "let me just help this lady, she's actually injured." Passing for me isn't just a thing that doesn't really matter, passing is whether I can survive against my own mind. I go too long not passing, I'm falling into ugly mental places. I don't live with my mum and I am so thankful for that because she says to me when I go and visit her "you know I can't call you he because you don't look like a he right?" I moved out of hers before I came out but I can honestly say that if I was still there falling into ugly mental places wouldn't be a worry, I'd spend my time trying to figure out how to escape, no matter the cost. It's 21 weeks until I get my first appointment to medically transition and honestly it's becoming agony. So yeah, for me passing isn't unfortunate or unnecessary, for me it's mental stability, it's a relationship with my parents, it's everything.

@Tewdy Quew please then, tell me what I should be focusing on in this life. Tell me how to live my life after reading a single comment I wrote on a video. Heads up (since it's been a while since I wrote it,) I've still not been seen by the clinic, not long after this I nearly killed myself because of the pressure of college ignoring my issues, my toxic ass mother trying use pull me back to the years of abuse she gave me and the fact that the clinic have now set me back 4 times because they are underfunded. So please tell this stranger on the internet how to live a life you know nothing about. The only thing I was wrong about was needing a relationship with both my parents. Passing for me still makes it a lot easier for my mind to stay stable.
@rhimanorangeley40834 жыл бұрын
@5,ooo LightYears Away thanks for your kind words, luckily I've grown a lot stronger since writing this comment but inlucky for me I've not got any closer to transitioning medically because the clinic is underfunded and the government is a piece of ass. For me I think I had passing so high in my priorities because my abusive ass mother (which I'm happy to say I don't talk to anymore) kept telling me that as long as I don't look masculine nobody will take me seriously. She was feeding my lies about how I'd be perceived but because she's done that from the day I was born I was just too used to internalizing them. Thankfully I'm moving past that now and as much as I do still try to pass when I'm out, it doesn't feel as dire as it did before. (Not to say now my dysphoria is nothing, it's just not clouded in lies anymore)

2:31 I am very surprised, she said 'transgenders' I'vealways been told that this is a stigmatising and incorrect term, and instead it should be 'transgender people'. Even if you say to a trans person 'Oh I would never have known [that you were trans]' that's still offensive even though you are seemingly complimenting them. It enforces the idea that you have to pass (appear to be stereotypically male/female) when you may not look that way naturally. Passing is also what a lot of cis people judge trans people on, trying to work out 'how trans' they really are. Which is bullsh*t. If someone is trans(*) they are trans! Here's the gender binary again,passing is about fitting into society's flawed gender binary. If no one conformed to it, and were just themselves, and accepted for that, this would even be a problem! Rant over.
@thatthingyouseeatthecorner52499 жыл бұрын
Well they don't accept their bodies do they? They try to look cis right? Other wise they would stay in the body they have and call themselves what they want. How is calling them what they are offensive? "I would have never know you were transgendered" mean you did a good job of changing your body.

@thatthingyouseeatthecorner52499 жыл бұрын
Johann Schiel Exactly they don't fit the criteria for either male or female so someone should create a gender that houses transgender people, hermaphrodites and everything else like that. So no one would have to change themselves and everyone can get over it

That Thing You See At The Corner Of Your Eye The better way is to get used to the idea, that every single person has his/her own gender (identity and orientation). People need to STOP generalizing!!! After all, we are all are own selves, we are all so different and individual, alien from one another... I do pass as a cis male with no actual biological transition. When people think of me as completely masculine, it's a compliment, because I didn't fit in being feminine/cis when I was younger. The two ways I confuse people is when I walk into a women's washroom and people look at me weird, like 'why'd that guy walk into the girl's washroom?' Where I live, it's really conservative so I definitely have to be careful with that so I don't startle anyone and so I slip into the mens washroom. The other is when I tell people my name is Sierra after they've thought they've been talking to a guy the whole time, which is why I go by the name Alyster sometimes.

Somewhere along the line, normal was defined. Anything outside of that normal, (which I'll point out changes frequently) was seen as bad, immoral, or disgusting. It was said that there were only two genders and for the longest time, this was accepted. It was said that loving someone of your gender was bad, and this was accepted. But why? Do you know why you hate, or do you just parrot what you've been told? Times change, people change, needs change. I am a cis bi girl, so I'll never know what it feels like for trans people- but I support them, and I support love. It doesn't matter what your gender is when it comes to love. If someone is born in a body they don't feel right in, how does it change your life as an outsider? Love is the most powerful thing we have- and the only thing that lasts forever. (Not lust, which is often mistaken for love.) So please, don't fight against people who use a different word than you've been conditioned to expect when describing themselves. No one should have to hide themselves, least of all those pioneering for acceptance and love.

Antonio Mendez, actually... i am getting help. i already formed a small group of people that will help me hunt down these freaks, and as you see, i am looking for more helpers on-line. i am talking to people and get them to join me. and we will get read of this pest once and for all. we must hunt them everywhere we see them. for ex: i especially catch them at supermarket parking lots.
