pro AND con - St. Louis City not in St. Louis County complication - skews the metro area on national rankings/comparisons (pro - we are better than our "city" rankings, con - some inefficiencies where we work at cross purposes). pro - GREAT place to raise a family, LOTS of free amenities that are world class (zoo, forest park, etc), traffic pretty darn good for our size. pro - we are generally kind, friendly, welcoming populace.

I so appreciate your realistic perspective on the race issues. So many US cities suffer from problems like these, STL is certainly not the only city with these issues, but it’s definitely a visible player in that discourse. There are so many historical reasons why these problems exist, and while not all of us can really speak to racial discrimination personally (I’m also white) we can’t shut our eyes to the truth or pretend that racism is no longer a problem. Right on man, proud to be a subscriber and very excited to move to St. Louis for my PhD at WashU next month 😊

I think your video gives a fair assessment. I have lived in St. Louis 70 years and have seen the large movement of people away from the city to St. Louis County but more recently beyond St. Louis County to a well spread out region. I grew up in the Southhampton neighborhood of the city but have lived with own family in the County for most of my years. I also recommend the University of Missouri at St. Louis for a very good education at much lower cost, which served myself and our kids well. It was surprising how many people went to school there during my working years. Definately good for the Accounting and Business direction but also much more. St. Louis city does still have good neighborhoods but they are close to poor areas riddled with crime. Even north St. Louis county has issues. Sadly this seems to be an issue with U.S. cities but needs to be a concern for anyone considering city living. I base this opinion watching the 10:00 News seeing too much car theft, broken car windows, and even worse. It all depends on your risk tolerance of crime. Many here only go in to the city for its sports venues and other attractions like museums, the Zoo, and the Arts. I would say othersie the biggest negative is the summer heat and humidity, but there are four seasons and winters mild compared to the North.

I did go to the University of Kentucky in Lexington which is a much easier city to live in. Yet of course Lexington is a much smaller city plus U.K. is a pretty good university to attend. Thanks for the video. I looked because I have roots in St. Louis and I'm rooting around for family history information. My mother's side of the family was from St. Louis. I grew up in Chicago in the 1960s. My father used to send me to St. Louis in the summer because of the race riots in Chicago. I stayed with my grandmother or my aunt (who lived in St. Joseph). I can tell you right now that people in St. Louis were way less racist than people in Chicago. I saw some of the race riots in Chicago and it was raw hate. People in St. Louis were much more polite about the topic. Blatant displays of bigotry and racism were socially acceptable in Chicago in the 1960s. In St. Louis they were not. I was even taught by a nun in St. Louis in the 1960s that it was OK for a white person to marry a black person as long as they were Catholic. Nobody in Chicago would dare say such a thing in the 1960s. Your house would have been burned down, 100% certain. Speaking of houses, I am fascinated by the unique architecture of St. Louis. That's a big reason I browse these videos. I'm trying to get glimpses of the old houses and buildings. I clearly remember the architectural vibe of St. Louis. I'd visit if I still knew somebody there.

Chicago has racism there too. The only difference is that the many races of people ignore each other. Everyone only deal with each other when it comes to business transactions or hospitality, there is no mistreatment. I'm surprised at St Louis racism being more bold.In Chicago if you don't move to there neighborhoods or areas, if you respectfully don't speak to each other its not a problem. Unfortunately that's how it is in chicago. It's segregated. It's some areas in Chicago that's diverse. As a Black Female, I was blessed to live amongst diversity. I'm not in the city of Chicago, now. My friends are White, asians, Mexican, Indian and other blacks. I was hoping to move to STL, because I'm about to Graduate from Nursing school as a registered Nurse. I'm going to continue to research. I am going to rethink things. Great Video, thanks!

The fact that people aren't coming and going all the time was a plus for me (after spending most of my adult life in NYC and SF). I was tired of friends moving away every month. The big cons are: St Louis is not walkable at all, has poor public transit, the day-to-day food scene is terrible (ie, there are very few good hole-in-wall places). Obviously crime and violence are an issue. I'm a 6'1" 200 lb guy but I try to avoid walking alone at night (I live off Cherokee, which isn't super dangerous but isn't exactly safe either). The big reason IMO to move to St Louis is that you can use your money to pursue your dreams because cost-of-living is so low. I didn't find St Louis nearly as racist as I expected (although, they say - go out to the county).

I have been to DC and the East coast often for work and personal travel. I travelled all over the world and crime, especially gun violence, in the USA is really shocking compared to most countries. St. Louis does have a big issue with gun crime, although it gets reported statistically higher in STL because of the ways that STL is divided into many cities (94 municipalities and the main city is just 64 sq miles) so the most of the suburbs are excluded from the crime stats. Ugh. Lots to say there, BUT. I live in North city just 1 mile from forest park and most of my neighbors are 98% black, but 1/2 mile away are 50 mil homes. My neighbors are wonderful caring people and I have never been happier. I would suggest if you are renting the Central West End as it is full of progressive people, doctors, medical and university people.

It made me really happy that you decided to include and not ignore the issues with racism. The racism in an area is an aspect that of course should be considered by all, and on top of that it is even more important for those most affected by it to know this information if looking into living here, as shown in other comments. As we see increasing pushes to “ignore” or at least prohibit even mentions of racism and inequality, I was relieved to see you decide to not do so, and to be so transparent as to also mention your own experiences with proximity to racist issues in your own high school, as an important example of its pervasiveness. I think including that section as a point in this overall video is very fair and professional, and that you just took a very genuine and human approach in speaking about it. I think it seems you got mostly very positive feedback, but just because of the few ignorant/misunderstanding comments, and because of the relief I mentioned when watching your video, I just felt the urge to reiterate and encourage you specifically in your execution of the racism section included in this video, and in the inclusion of it itself, and for any future videos or moments where it is pertinent information as well. Genuinely, thank you for this!

I cannot believe you would even mention red lining like it is a current issue. 1) I would argue it is financial rather than racial to the extent that people cannot qualify for the areas they want to live and 2) you just said that most people are born here - quite often they decide to move near their place of birth when they buy. We laugh in So. Co. that no one lives more than 5 miles from the house they were born in. Consequently, some areas just stay naturally a certain way, but does not mean anyone with a different race, creed or sexual orientation would not be accepted and graciously welcomed. But otherwise agree with other commenters, good on you for 'going there' and addressing the elephant in the room.

If you didn’t repeat yourself 4-5 times you would cut this video to 3 minutes and get more viewers. With that said, how can you do a pro/con video of a city that’s ranked the most dangerous city in the US for several years and not mention crime? You spent four minutes talking about native St Louisans and leave out the food, music, architecture, professional sports teams, weather, etc. You give zero perspective on what it’s like to live in STL. Almost as if you grew up in the county.

From my understanding, it has pockets like any other big city. There is good and bad everywhere. Sometimes it’s just pockets or certain streets in a particular area. Generally, according to locations mentioned in new reports, higher crime may be north of Delmar, which tends to be the dividing line for the city. Some higher crime areas mentioned on news sites tend to be north of Delmar. In South city, higher crime tends to be around the “ state named “ streets, the Bevo Mill area, somewhere near Gravios and Grand some areas in Carondolet area, going toward Broadway and near Grand, Area around Broadway and Chippewa, Downtown near near Tucker and 9th 10 th is going toward highway ( again north of Delmar) lots apt there. These are only some areas I hear about and see mentioned on social media sites. There are some nice areas too, one of which is the “ Hills” area. Hope this helps.

Really enjoyed your video but hardly agree with some of your thoughts. St. Louis is no more or less "racist" than any other city. If anything it's one of the most diverse places I've been too. It was a drop off point for refugees from many Balkan states during Milošević reign during the 90s and early 2000s. There's a huge Latino, Asian, Balkan, and especially Italian populations here in STL. When I went to public school in at Ladue (currently ranked 16th in the nation) they had implemented a "desegregation program" where inner city kids were taken into ladue to allow for better education. And while I don't 100% agree with the idea I think it at least shows attempts have been made to resolve race issues. St. Louis is very much not a racist city, but more naturallly segregated unfortunately. I would not agree that the general population is any more racist than other US states but it's very true that STL tends to have blacks living East and North and whites living west and south. I'd also like to mention St louis is a great sports town especially if you are a baseball fan
