You asked, and we listened! Here is an updated Pros and Cons video for Living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This one revisits many of the topics previously discussed while adding in important points we took away from your comments. It was also updated for 2022! Let me know if I missed anything!
Pro #1: The People: The most genuine and kind people.
Con #1: Crime: Our per capita crime rates are higher, and yes we have been deemed the murder capital of Canada. But honestly, do not choose to not move here because of the crime. See video for why!
Pro #2: Diversity: I would argue, that cities of similar size elsewhere in Canada are not nearly as culturally, racially, and religiously diverse as we are in Winnipeg. Folklorama is one of the most popular festivals held in Winnipeg throughout the year and it totes that it is the largest and longest-running multicultural festival of its kind in the world.
Use in Video: folklorama.ca/festival/
Con #2: Transportation: Winnipeg’s public transportation system is not the greatest, with routes coming more seldom, but couple that with the cold weather when you are waiting a few minutes for your bus and those waits feel even longer.
Pro #3: Dining: We have a great food scene here with a variety of options available - because of our awesome diversity. Winnipeg has amazing dining options due to its ethnically diverse population. Whether you have a craving for Dim Sum, Sushi, Steak, BBQ, Indian, Lobster, Tapas, etc. there are great options for you to indulge in. I have lived in Winnipeg for almost 20 years now and there are still restaurants I have yet to explore!
Con #3: Construction: Due to our short summers and cold winters, Winnipeg has a very short season to do road repair. What this means is heavy construction during the summer which creates a lot of lane closures, detours, in every which way of the City. This construction is necessary though. In a city with the temperature fluctuations like we have, the warm and then cold causes a lot of expansion and contraction in our streets here, which also has made us famous for some very big potholes.
Pro #4: Cost of Living: Our cost of living here is much lower than cities of similar size across Canada. Housing costs, utility costs and taxes analyzed in the video!
Con #4: Mosquitoes - We do have a high proportion of mosquitoes here because of the abundance of rivers, lakes, and flat lands that hold waters. Mosquitoes love water afterall. If you are not afraid of citronella candles and a little bit of bug spray, it would not be unheard of to use these products between the months of June to August.
Pro #5 Sports: For playing, a lot more space and venues. Professional sports teams as well. The Winnipeg Jets have made the playoffs fairly consistently over the last few years, the Blue Bombers winning the Grey Cup in 2019, we now have FC Valour - a professional soccer team. The Goldeyes are our professional baseball team and offer very affordable tickets if you are wanting to take the whole family to a game on a hot summer night. Our AHL Hockey team, the Manitoba Moose, have also had some very good seasons of late and are a more affordable option if you are wanting to take the family out to watch some Hockey all while having the atmosphere of the Canada Life Centre.
Con #5: Downtown living: In other large cities, the closer you live to downtown, the more expensive the prices become. Not in Winnipeg. Our downtown core is thought to be more of a slum at times, and as a result, not as desirable of a place to be.
Pro #6: Traffic: You can get from one end of the city to another often in under 30 minutes (or maybe that’s just me with my heavy foot), but in all honesty, commutes here are nothing when compared to other large cities. A traffic jam in Winnipeg might mean that it takes you an hour to get home from work, and that would be a rarity. There are some routes that seem exceptionally frustrating, like Route 90, but with plans for expansion in the future, we are hoping that many of these routes are made much more smooth.
Con #6: Climate: November to April can definitely feel like Winter, with January and December being two of our most cold months, in which -30 to -40 Celsius degree temperatures aren’t unheard of. Our average low is minus 20.2 degrees Celsius according to a internet search I just did. Something to take into consideration as well here, that really came as a shock to me coming from North Western Ontario which is only 2 hours away from Winnipeg, but windchill is something you have to keep an eye on.

Moving down from the north with my daughter, and don't know many folks in the city quite yet. A bit scared at the new beginning only because I don't like being so alone in life. I'm sure things will fall into place and I'm lucky to have such a wonderful little girl. I would absolutely adore the small talk , that community feel. I already feel like single dad baggage but I'm sure the city has plenty to offer the two of us to do and keep spirits high

I live in Iowa, and we also have winter and construction season. You mentioned wondering what is different in North Dakota...the population of Winnipeg alone is about the same as the ENTIRE state of North Dakota. Maybe they have good roads because there is no one driving on them. :)

I grew up in the Peg in the 70's- 80's in the St. James Westwood area. It was a different era and a different city back then. I would catch the bus to downtown for a dime to catch the afternoon cinema and back then their was no helicopter parenting as long as you were home before the lights went out. I left in 89 as the writing was on the wall that downtown was beginning to become dangerous and desperate looking. I have since lived in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto where i have been for over 20 years. I would consider moving back but doubt it haha

I'm going to Winnipeg in winter to find a job. Is this a good decision in the winter?
@suziesaintb
@suziesaintb Жыл бұрын
Make sure you have a warm, thick( layered or insulated) winter coat and enough money to pay for shelter (hotel or apartment). You do not want to be homeless in Winnipeg when it gets to -20C to -30C. So be prepared. I would suggest coming to Winnipeg toward to the end of winter like March or April (yes, it's still cold in April). Good luck in your job search!
