Yup know all about that. 5 years on a ship with way less time off than you. I was contractor on the MPS ships. All those places youve been to and named. From my experience, most merchant seaman when in port just go to the bars or clubs. No real time to explore the country and too busy. We contractors had the weekends off and we explored way more in country plus we only did 8 hours a day when working. We could go to shore and disappear easier than Merchant Seaman. We also had military dod id card could use px, commissary.

We had NINTENDO back in 1990. I have motion sickness pills I picked up at AAFES online for the wife or whomever if we go deep sea fishing. I never got seasick since the military. You want motion sickness, go inside an amphibious tracked vehicle with 25 packed in loaded down Marines.

Thank you, I am looking to maybe try and join Merchant Marines after I get my bachelor's degree. I've been at the for about 7 years like Tommy Boy lol although I was doing my schooling part time. I live nearby Lake Superior about 60 or 70 miles away from there in Northwest Wisconsin. I was medically discharged from the navy in 2007 during basic training and I really want to try and serve my country even if it's not formally like the military is but it's still pretty disciplined. But I am also 32 going on 33 and I so I can go to an academy since I'm too old. I'm really interested in just working on a cargo ship and going around seeing parts of the world or just even working between the US and Canada on the Great Lakes. Honestly, the money is a benefit but it's really not the money but the experience that I want. I just feel like it would be something that I'd like to try if I could.

Depends on the types of ships you are on. If you bare on a container or tanker ship it can be 18-24 hrs. If you are in a car carrier it can be 24-48hrs. Grain ships it can be about a week in port. Military Sealift Command Ships you can be in port for weeks at a time. It just depends on the vessel you are on.

Pro not paying for living? Ok yah aint no rent on the boat. what about your crib back home? Mortgage or rent? Saw u have a nice place! U got a tenant back home? Maybe some are homeless and when off the boat simply get an air bnb between contracts? Or live rough out of a vehicle or stay with family?

Like I said … a pro is not paying for living .. I know people who live with there parents when they get home , house hack , AirB&B.. all type of stuff .. if your going to be on a ship 8 months out the year .. why not ? As for me .. I do what I wanna do .. & I still save 90% of my income because I have a gf that splits every with me .. so not even half of one check is what I spend on bills
