First off, the painting is gorgeous. I'd be interested in a print once they become available. Secondly... here's a little serendipity for you.... while watching this video, I was interrupted by a phone call. The caller was a good friend who has offered me a dream opportunity to become a self employed artist. 🤤🤤😁 This could take care of many issues that were stopping me from transitioning, so that's awesome. Perhaps one day I'll be as successful as you!

You talked about not know what to do when you have kids. My mom has been a self-employed private vocal teacher all my life, and what she did was just have someone she trusted watch me (and my sister, once she was born) at that person's house so that we couldn't disturb her and her students while she was working. Then once we were old enough to understand what was going on, we could just stay at home. We just knew not to bother mom while she was teaching. Then when we were in school, that was about 6 hours a day that she had open to teach without even having to worry about what we were doing. She tried to schedule most of her students during our school time, but if she had students still taking lessons after we got home we knew to just work on homework quietly in another room until she was done. I know it's not the same career, but you could work around it similarly!

Love this series on self employment, it's really insightful :) Like others I just want to give a tiny bit of critique for the art. I wanna point out that one thing you're definitely improving at is getting the overall lighting of the piece down. I remember in your old artwork the lighting was quite 'piecey', where each colour was sort of lit independently of one another. This painting has showed that you've totally improved in that sense and the lighting feels a lot more cohesive! The only thing that sticks out to me is the eyes - I think the rest of the piece works so well but the eyes are just a tiny bit too white and it sticks out a little. But as a whole I love this painting! Can't wait to see more oil paintings from you :)

The viewpoint that self employed is equivalent to unemployed drives me nuts too. It really discourages a lot of talented people who could successfully run their own businesses from even trying in the first place. I hope more people take inspiration from you and others who have a modern approach to tackling the challenges of self employment.

so this isn't something you mentioned but my dad is self employed and it may be different in Canada(and other countries) but in the USA health insurance is something to consider because most jobs have that included but when your self employed you have to pay a higher price than a regular working person and can be something to consider. Of course I'm not saying it completely out weighs the pros, just putting it in the comment section for people who are considering becoming self employed.

The advice about not yet quitting your day job is pretty important. I don't think most people, especially the younger crowd, realize just how expensive things can get and how fast money goes out the window. Definitely make sure you're in a stable enough position before going full time self employed. Lovely artwork as well, by the way :)

I was like in a different world while watching this???? like I don't even know. This painting is so beautiful that I was fully engaged the whole video and I'm genuinely interested in this topic because I am an artist (not necessarily visual arts). So I didn't even realize I'd been staring at my laptop for 19 mins lmao. But this video helped me figure out what I wanted as my career more. I'd never thought about income tax or how often I'd get off task. Sooo thank you for this video because it was helpful. P.S. this piece is stunning like the girl in it looks so good and the flowers remind me of some sort of glass because of the light color.

This painting hella reminds me of the Beasts human portrait in Disneyland, I know you know what I am talking about. Love it Baylee great job. :) Also thanks for the video, I will eventually want to be self employed but I will be fortunate as Lincoln will be older. When you do decide to have a kiddo, it will be a balance, you will have so much to deal with teething [the struggle is real], ear aches, sickness and all those other things but they will reward you ten fold and I believe you could handle it when you are ready. I do think if you are still as successful as you currently are, you should consider a nanny for maybe 3 days a week or everyday really so you can have the best of both worlds. Well that's what I would do lol. As always you find a way to inspire me. :)

For me, the hardest thing to figure out was retirement! I don't know how other countries work, but in the US, most people who have a retirement plan (and everyone should!) get it through work - like their company will match 402k contributions. But for self employed people, a lot of the typical retirement plans aren't an option. I ended up choosing a Roth IRA. But it took a *lot* of research and was pretty stressful. In retrospect, it's something I just should have gone to an accountant for - just found someone I trusted and been like "tell me what to do; this is outside of my wheelhouse".

Hi Baylee Jae! I'm new to making KZbin videos and recently saw your video in my recommend list. So glad I have found your channel and really enjoying your videos. While you artwork is fantastic, I'm so blown away by your video skills! Being older, I feel so behind the curve with it all. You've given me something to strive for. As for this video, I totally agree with your list, however I will add that as a freelance artist with a family, it's a huge challenge trying to work in your "zone" or be focused when you have to care for other people (drop off, pickup, dinner, laundry... life!). Having a family is the biggest blessing a person can have, but it doesn't come without giving up a lot of personal freedom, too. Anyhow, thanks and glad you're out there! Cheers! :)

Omg, the comments from family and friends about "that's not a real job" -- THIS. THIS A THOUSAND TIMES. I do KZbin (even though my channel is tiiiiiny), I run an Etsy shop, and I do have a slightly more traditional data entry job I do from home, but omg if I had a dollar for every single time I get someone telling me that "that's not a real job" and assuming it means the same thing as unemployment, I would be literally a millionaire. My youngest sister is the biggest critic in this department and it's beyond infuriating. Somehow, it makes me feel a tiny bit better hearing I'm not the only one who constantly hears these comments.

I totally agree with the blurring of lines between work and private. I work from home and find I work more hours than I did when I worked in an office. It's really hard to switch off from work mode when your home is your work place. Buts it's important to set that time aside or your work becomes your life.

I've been really thinking about becoming self-employed. I used to be a freelancer a long time ago, but it was hard because it was right out of college. Now it's been 10 years of creating for someone else. It's getting harder and harder every day to work for people that don't respect or understand art. Or even regular pipelines. At least if I were freelancing, I wouldn't be trapped with the same task masters. I've also missed so much of my family's lives because of constantly having to work extra with no gain. If I worked from home, at least I would be working where I want to work.

Thanks for making this video! Once I had a baby, it got better for me after the 3rd month. I was able to get my baby to get on a schedule. I put him down to sleep at 7pm and that’s when I get to paint or edit videos uninterrupted for 6 to 8 hrs. But I’m a night owl & don’t mind staying up till 3 or 4am. Then during the day he takes 1hr-2hr naps & that’s the time I use to clean the house or take a shower, or do what’s needed. On my 9th month of pregnancy I was sooo big I couldn’t do much, even sitting in front of the pc hurt( my back) so I didn’t get to paint. & the 5 weeks after pregnancy were really rough for me as I could barely even walk or sit for long periods of time & also you are sleep deprived (With your baby eating every 2-3 hrs). If you can get help from your mom or a relative, get it! You’ll need it! So plan ahead material for say 3-4 months! 💜 ur channel!
