Boiled Linseed Oil gives the darker wet look. Mineral Spirits evaporates leaving the waxy seal. How often you need to reapply depends on your region/weather. The hotter the region (e.g. Arizona) the sooner -- about every 90 days.

Good question. No, it will not do any harm in our experience. Do not use it on glass.
