The captain of USS The Sullivans - which is protecting HMS Queen Elizabeth on her maiden operational voyage - has told Forces News his crew are “ready for anything”.
The UK’s Carrier Strike Group recently spent several weeks in the Eastern Mediterranean where the first operational sorties were flown in the fight against so-called Islamic State over Iraq.
Sian Grzeszczyk and camera operator Hannah King report from on board the American destroyer when she docked in Cyprus - the only journalists to be granted access.
Report by Sian Grzeszczyk (@SianGrz) and Hannah King (@FTVHan).

Today modern warfare seriously needs alliances....the US can have all the Naval toys that the world envies but if you dont have alliances...like the RN on your side... youre doomed. This is a new level of Naval Power never seen before. Russia and China should be losing sleep over this alliance. Bc a strike on the UK is a strike on the US....same with Australia or Canada or even France. This is a serious threat to China and Russia.

It was named after the 5 Sullivan brothers (George, Francis, Joseph, Madison, and Albert) who were all Killed In Action aboard USS JUNEAU which was sunk by a Japanese submarine in the Battle of Guadalcanal. @@sensibledriver933 The type 45 was designed from the outset as an air defence destroyer and, in that role, it is well ahead of the Arleigh Burke class and almost certainly the best in the world. It was designed to shoot down anything hostile in the sky with one shot. On any deployment, a type 45 would work in cooperation with a type 23 (or a successor class) which would provide the AS/surface defence capability. The AB class is a superb general purpose destroyer which is highly competent in all 3 roles: better than the type 45s in AS/surface capability, but not as good in the air defence role. The type 45s are also better in the low level warfare role due to their ability to embark a sizeable marine contingent and operate bigger helicopters such as the Chinook. The biggest weakness of the type 45 class is that there aren't enough of them. The Hobarts are good ships but not as good as the other 2 classes.

Well the founding of modern US Special Forces was based on the SAS. In the 60s a US officer - Charles Beckwith, who'd served with the US Special Forces Group in Loas/Vietnam was sent as an exchange officer to the SAS who were operating with great success in Malaya. From this experience, he concluded that what were considered special forces of the US at the time (the Rangers and the Green Berets) were not of equal standard and on his return went on to form Delta Force in the 70s.

We are witnessing a strategic commitment to interoperability on the part of the two seafaring powers. There's a great deal of synergy to be had and I doubt if any other two nations on earth could achieve it at this level of complexity. It's not a question of one needing the other in any kind of dependency for protection. It's that together these nations play a role greater than the sum of their parts.

_The Sullivans_ has an interesting battle flag-five gold stars on a white background with a red border. The flag design is called a service flag for families with members in the military and have different colored stars with different meanings. Blue means that a member is presently serving; gold denotes that a member died in service to the nation. I guess some of the commentators on this do not understand what belonging to NATO actually means! Supporting each other when needed is a principle core value. Also, a change in Navy strategy requires interoperability and so we shall see greater support from other NATO Allies also in the future. Navy's rarely operate in isolation these days, despite what the media may report.

Secret ?? well for sure that war canoe has many ? and one can see the advantage of having that war ship in that strike group, working in tandem with the F-35s where they can both integrate with each other by way of the Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL pronounced: MAHdel) and the ships Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air concept (NIFC-CA) which basically allows the F-35 to target a threat and lay down target data tracks back to the destroyer in the strike group. That ship could then launch an SM-6 at the target only using the target data track and not its own radar. The same applies to any aircraft with the same integrated technology like the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye and the new B-21 which is designed to sit right on the edge of the battle space 24/7 all working as sensors and shooters to create a kill web , and one serious over the horizon threat ! engaging targets at max range and beyond their own sensors.

So, I wonder if the destroyer is really there to protect 18 billionish dollar worth of US assets (F-35s) along with the US personnel aboard the Queen Elizabeth who involved in the training of British pilots. Outside of a time of war or training exercises, I can't imagine either US or UK military assets under the command of an allied commander unless the ships were assigned to NATO operations/enforcement. I'm not military, but if it hasn't occurred within a decade then that was the Second Gulf War - Operation Iraqi Freedom. If someone can elucidate more, please do.

At this point the UK should have bought AB class destroyers as the Type 45 now costs more and is a worse ship. I get originally they were about half the price of an AB class destroyer, but with the new VLS upgrade they are more expensive and don't even have ballistic missile defense.
@ThatCarGuy
@ThatCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
@UCgZs1XK0FInWp15P64pRTqg The aster 30 is not meant for BMs, but as a last resort. "The Type 45 does not have a formal theatre ballistic missile defence (TBMD) capability but its potential for such a role is being assessed" "At the Defence Select Committee, it was highlighted that the Type 45’s lack of versatility had left Britain without a maritime ballistic missile defence capability - something the U.S. and Japan in particular were investing heavily in for their own AEGIS ships. Dr Sidharth Kaushal, a research Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, noted to this effect: “The Navy, however, will need to look at two key questions: first, the absence of a capability to counter anti-ship ballistic missiles on the Type 45 destroyer. That was discussed in the 2015 strategic defence and security review, as part of a wider ballistic missile defence capability for the vessel, but it was absent in this review, which I thought was noteworthy.” Rear Admiral Alex Burton, who also attended the meeting, concurred stating: “I would just reinforce Dr Sidharth’s view on the anti-ballistic missile defence, which I think was a wrong absence within the review… one of the gaping holes within the defence review is an anti-ballistic missile defence mechanism, both at sea and ashore.” When further questioned, the admiral reiterated: “There is a gaping hole in our ability to defend a carrier against a ballistic missile without the support of our allies, so there is mitigation there, but it is mitigation that is reliant on our allies… The Navy has been clear that there has been a national capability gap, for the last 10 years, at least, in an anti-ballistic missile defence capability. That can be mitigated by working alongside our allies, just like the Americans use our capabilities to mitigate their capability gaps. Firstly, this is known, and, secondly, it can be mitigated.”
