I discovered Dr. McGill’s book Back Mechanic a couple weeks ago after doing research for my crippling back pain (going to the chiropractor only made it worse 2x, went to my doctor whoordered an mri- which my health Insurance has denied until I wait a mandatory 6 weeks and try other therapies ). So I was thrilled to see him on one of my absolute favorite podcasts! 😁 I’ve read the book, and have been performing the big 3 and walking on a daily basis for 1 week and my pain has decreased by like 70%. It’s a really hard pill to swallow to realize that something I have loved so much (Crossfit) has also contributed to a lot of pain. I see now that Cf coupled with a desk job and bad movement patterns in my everyday life was a foregone conclusion to constant pain. But I am very hopeful that if I follow the direction given in the book that I can be pain free. Thanks, Doc!

I do understand Dr McGill's approach: Avoid the pain triggers, learn spine hygiene, build a strong core, etc. I just have one or two questions: How do we recover the ability to go into flexion again? Or are we sentenced to move like a robot for the rest of our lives? Isnt there a missing link in back pain treatment? Why does it stop at "avoid flexion and brace"?

Chris... this was more than excellent. Two people that really understand the troubles and psychology of spinal injury. I am 42 and suffering more and more often. It’s more frequent and yes, it can be because of more sitting but its a vicious cycle. Pain causes you to rest. Rest is laying or sittng. When exercise might cause more flare-ups... it faces you in the wrong direction. We, the people must turn (for the most part) to the medical industries. I just got turned down from my insurance for an mri... because I hadn’t done at least 6 weeks of either meds or injections. If you have pain that occurs at diff parts of the spine, how would a doc even know where to inject the steriod?

I don’t work from home. I work in the operating room during long neurosurgeries. I often have surgeries that last 10-12 hours (no bathroom breaks no eating allowed). I have to sit on a stool for that amount of time and wear a lead xray vest...it’s super painful on my back. I also have osteoporosis from my hyperparathyroidism. I’ve told my employer but they have done nothing...I mean what do they care they work from home in a comfy chair. What should I do?

I stand for most of the day and had to correct my posture to eliminate the pain and soreness I was feeling. I have flat feet and correcting that with foot exercises SIGNIFICANTLY helped my posture. Don’t stand duck footed either. You feet is your foundation. If it’s not properly supporting your weight, then your posture breaks down through the kinetic chain. It’s bound to break down though when wearing a lead vest the whole day, but it will help. Make sure your neck is properly aligned and not drooping when looking down.

Also if your stiff I would say you are dehydrated and need to rehydrate especially when waking up.
@rygvrkstedet12533 жыл бұрын
Sorry but you dont hydrate your spine by drinking wather. Thats not how the spise works. When you Wake up In the morning, thats the time the spine is the most hydrated, and is one of the reason it’s feels stiff.🙂 and after an hour or so, walking around, the spine starts to dehydrate to normal levels.
@Clodhopping Жыл бұрын
@@rygvrkstedet1253Every cell in the body needs water for it's biochemical processes. All joints have fluid in them and that's why hydration is so important. In the morning your body is dehydrated after 7hrs without drinks.

But when we say “deserve”....I don’t know....it just seems like a lot to ask from most people as the UTTER MAJORITY of us had absolutely zero understanding of the damage we were doing. What's the effect of lying down for long hours to your back?
@trollop_73 жыл бұрын
Yongpagliawoh
@rustcohle67463 жыл бұрын
In his book, McGill says that sleeping more than 8 hours can give you more pain because the spinal discs get filled with water and if you go over the 8 hour period they can worsen existing pain (whether it's a disc bulge or herniation) because the bulge can grow due to the excess of water. I haven't read or heard him say anything about lying down for long hours though but the same principles apply.

@morebrainmoregains32347 ай бұрын
Because there isn't anything he can recommend to the general public other than the big 3. He'll have to diagnose exactly what triggers your pain and give you remedy tailored to you. Look at any other back video saying "FIx your disc bulge with these exercises!" I will guarantee you that you'll find comments under them of some people saying it made their back pain worse.
