People just do not understand what an 'advance' is. It's not a salary, It's a loan to set your situation up, like form a band, buy equipment, outfits, so you can do your job for the label and make money. Advances need to be paid back whether monetarily or by fulfilling contractual obligations to the label, that's why it's so restricting, you have to do what they say because You owe them. When Haley got dropped by Interscope not from anything she did, BEFORE she was able to promote her debut album w/ them, she never got to press, she never got to tour to support the album, let alone sell merch, she had zero ability to repay the advance quickly, it was a debt she accrued right out of the gate. That is why Haley went 'radio silent' for over a year after Interscope dropped her, either that or she had a 'no compete' clause in her contract that prevented her from signing w/ anyone else for a period of time. Haley wisely chose the independent route because she's fully aware and confident in her own abilities to succeed on her own merits.

I am absolutely terrified of spending other peoples money. It must be so tempting to go nuts when you get that first big record label advance, but it's straight-up gambling.

About your comment how Idol sometimes take contestants that don't have enough music experience to make something of their opportunities after the show is over. Haley's music experience comes from being the daughter of life time working musicians, but that wasn't enough for her. Working on her debut album, she insisted w/ Interscope that she be there at every step of the process so she could learn it. She even was given the opportunity to participate in the design and concepts of her album cover and music video. As much as Interscope was part of a 'down' time for Haley, I give them a lot of credit for giving Haley a lot of input into her album. Most songs on Idol albums are written for them by label song writers. All but one of fourteen songs on Haley's debut album was written by her (her debut single "Free" was not written by Haley). After Idol, Haley was introduced to her long time Lawyer, Dina LaPolt, by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. At the time, Dina was teaching a course at one of the CA colleges (UCLA I think?), so Haley took a semester in that class to start learning about the music business. Haley also signed w/ a Canadian publishing company that happened to be down the hall way from Dina's office. The first thing Ole did was send Haley to song writing schools abroad, including Santorini, Greece, where Haley met song writers she still writes with. Haley's longest post Idol relationships are with two entities that were there from the beginning, helping her learn about the business and nurturing her early career. Props to Haley knowing that she had much to learn and finding those who can teach her the industry so she doesn't have to rely on labels to make decisions for her

For your own enjoyment regarding 'visual writing' to listen to. One of my favorite recent Haley originals is "Oh Damn", Haley said she was inspired to write it while listening to "Doo Wop" on an am station. For me, the song immediately brings up images of a humid, sweaty summer day down near the bayou, with lyrics such as: "Tryna get on the scene so my sugar and cream can see me Hop on a greyhound to a flyover town Damn, I hope you're down to pick me up And driver winks and smiles at me and says, "Kid, good luck" I imagine the video is Haley lazing in a hammock on the banks of the Bayou, sipping some ice cold lemonade and day dreaming 🙃

Not long ago, I decided I wasn’t going to watch any more reaction videos, because I wasn’t sure there was much anyone could say that hadn’t already been said. The thing is, Haley is so dynamic and pleasing to the ear, it's going to be so easy to just focus on her PMJ projects, which is okay, only you have to ask yourself, what you're leaving on the table. I know - because that is what I did when I first heard them (though I've known Haley & her musical soul mate, Casey Abrams from American Idol). But I was really intrigued by how Scott Bradlee put all this together and curious as to how he became successful, so much so that I bought his book, "Outside the Jukebox: How I Turned My Vintage Music Obsession into My Dream Gig" (Amazon). Well, not only did it show me his process, but it also opened up a number of new vocalists I'd never heard of but that he collaborated with to bring success to his project - some of which are still on my playlist. That, and I found it a good read. So if you're feeling like you're denying yourself of music you'd like to sample off his hundreds of videos, that might be a good source to consider in deciding what to put aside to react to and leaving hundreds of other videos they've produced to enjoy now.

Pre-pandemic I was hoping to get as many PMJ to sign Scott's book for me, I think I have 12 including Scott, Haley, Casey, Jacob, Morgan, Sarah Niemitz, Adam Kubota, etc... Unfortunately, the artists during PMJ's glory years of 2015-2018 no longer tour w/ PMJ although I still want to get Ariana's. She's the only one missing I want to get from what I consider to be the golden era of PMJ's tours when Scott played Piano at every show and there was only one touring cast

@@bertjones3010 I saw your message on IG (I reserve IG DMs to message artists & musicians), so you actually saw them near the end of 2016. As far as I’m aware, Scott played all shows in 2015 on the European/US/Australian tours, right when they were exploding with that fantastic line-up. Scott took time off after that tremendously long stretch in 2015. As a a consolation, you did see Jesse Elder on piano, who IMO, is only second to Scott playing piano behind Haley. Jesse is super talented and was Scott’s second, his music director at that time, In fact, Jesse was Haley’s keyboard player for her European tour in 2017.

PMJ is the best thing that ever happened for Hayley (to date). It gave her the chance to be authentic and show what she can really do with top notch backing band. Some day she will put together her own top notch backing band and get a good song writer to really show what she can do. She should be the biggest female artist going. I can't think of another artist who has so much special sauce. I fully intend to go to any show of hers if she ever makes it close to Toronto. Scott is the driving force behind PMJ and does all the arrangements. Unless they have changed, PMJ doesn't have a permanent group of musicians or vocalist. Jimmy Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records, was an in-house mentor on Idol during Haley's season. He signed her to a record deal after the show. They released a deluxe version of her debut album, "Listen Up!", that was a Walmart exclusive. Haley cowrote 13 of the 14 songs. The NYT called the album "convincing and fresh." It noted: "these songs hark back to the 1960s and ’70s, when Motown girl groups were ceding ground to soul-driven rock. It’s singers’ territory that shows off both the smooth power of Ms. Reinhart’s voice and its engine-revving churn. "
