26:30 As someone that knows Japanese and has done translation work before (not for games, but elsewhere), I am seeing machine and AI being used more and more, especially in some scanlation groups online. The key aspect is having an editor that has a good grasp on both Japanese and English (or the source/target languages) to fine tune the output of the programs doing the work. I know for some PS1/Dreamcast/Saturn games it's more than just a language hurtle, sometimes the compression and the way the game stores text has to be reverse engineered before the translated text can even begin to be inserted into the dialog systems used by some games.
@nilzero568610 ай бұрын
If you have an editor who understands both Japanese and English editing an MTL then you'd just be redoing the work you already did, wasting time on a potentially erroneous MTL script when you could have just done it yourself and produced something likely a lot better and less sterile.
@Bakamoichigei10 ай бұрын
@@nilzero5686 I don't entirely agree. Obviously ground-up translation by a perfectly fluent individual is ideal, but lacking that, MTL as a tool can fill gaps. Like when I'm playing a game and I encounter something I can't read, I use my phone to translate it... If the MTL seems unhelpful or doesn't fit the context-which is MTL's biggest hurdle in Japanese, imho-I switch on 'display original language', and it shows me the romaji reading of the Japanese text, which is super helpful because my spoken Japanese far outstrips my reading ability. Like all tools, its effectiveness is down to how it's used.
@ChrisHilgenberg10 ай бұрын
@@nilzero5686 'redoing work you already did' It's easier to OCR or load text into a ML/AI model to produce a translated output, then use that to fine tune the translation than having to do all the work yourself. Before such things became common, I'd use the technique with Google translate to get a 'gist' view of something, then go through and fine tune the actual (and usually missing) nuance of what was being said.

There's so many mystery adventure/visual novel games on the ps1 that I'm interested in but my Japanese is still not good enough to fully grasp their stories. I'm really holding out for a translation of _Robbit Mon Dieu_ , the third and final main-line entry in the _Jumping Flash_ series. The big bads of the first two games remain well and truly defeated, and so _RMD_ takes a different path: Robbit's mission is to assist the public in whatever odd job they need, and jobs are chosen non-linearly from a world map at the player's leisure. The game features voice acting and quite a bit of dialogue and text setting up each level, making it a ripe pick for English translation. I'd also love to see a translation of the _Jumping Flash_ series' PocketStation-focused spinoff, _Pocket MuuMuu_ , but y'know. One pipe dream at a time.

As a massive fan of the original Ultima Underworld, playing without a mouse sounds incredibly painful, but to each their own I suppose. UU also does feature walkways above the floor and (untextured) polygonal objects, so it is 3D even if very limited by hardware of the time. It's what inspired John Carmack to create what became the Wolfenstein 3D and then Doom engines as faster alternatives, and those really are 2.5D.

Speaking of Prism Land Story, another game from D-Cruise that got an official English language release, albeit only in PAL regions, is Defeat Lightning, renamed to Future Racer in PAL regions by Midas. Like the European release of Prism Land Story, it is also heavily modified from the original Japanese version as all story segments are all shown in FMVs, rather than in-engine. Also, many story segments, such as the one choice you can make in the final boss race, and pre-race quotes from the drivers are missing in the PAL version.

Then I was trying to play it on emulation and, yeah, it's weird and unique looking, but the core gameplay was surprisingly well done in it's classic tactical way [then again, I could miss a lot, because of the language]. And the branching path, depending on the choices and creating the renown for the character's army. Also London Seirei Tanteidan, I saw it was mentioned in the comments few times, so maybe?... And it looks beatiful.

Thank you! You basically need to apply the patch to an iso of your game. Then you can either burn the updated iso to a cd-r or run it via an sd loader.
