Hi there, I got a little lost along 13:36 because you said to remember that cable you mentioned earlier. Sorry but which particular cable at the back of the motherboard are you referring to here? And is all of this necessary to tear apart when I just wanted to only replace the thermal paste? Would appreciate your reply a whole lot, thank you.

I just followed this tutorial. Got slightly lost while putting screws back in but back tracked through the video to ensure I caught myself. Thank you so much. I have had it on for several minutes and it is so much quieter. I verified my blue ray by running Red Dead 2 and it seemed to work flawlessly. It also was comforting to be instructed through this by someone that sounded like a calm Henry Cavill. Again. Thank you.

I just bought a PS4 the original one for $100. Every time I played a game it sounded like it can start a motorcycle. I opened it up and cleaned the fan. Used an air duster in a can with a cloth. Still that didn’t work. I saw your video and ordered the thermal paste. I re watched it again and did the exact same steps. Now the PS4 sounds like it’s not even on! Very helpful and I will recommend to any living soul hearing that chainsaw.

my ps4 is so loud. i also cleaned it while opening it. what you describe may help. problem is im pissed that i have to take such steps for a console. i have outgrown even building my own pc, something i did in the past. i do not have the capacity for it anymore, life is stressful enough. as if im now starting to apply new thermal paste for sonys shitty job. i am very displeased and not happy with this console generation.

@@akajiblubb2401 Me too man, me too. I enjoy little projects, but it pisses me off that I have to do this myself when I'd much rather play older consoles anyway. As it stands, PS4 is means of hanging out with family and friends far away so I'm gonna do this to spare myself the noise..

UPDATE: I have cleaned my PS4 and replaced the thermal paste. I probably didn't need to replace the paste, but it definitely did help a little before I found the real problem. The real culprit was in fact the heatsink below the fan, it was CAKED in a thick layer of dust. Once I cleaned it, it ran like it was brand new. I can actually hear the beautiful audio of Red Dead 2 now and not have my ears drown out from a jet engine. To anyone reading, definitely take the time to open your PS4 and clean it. Overtime the problem will get worse since your PS4 fan should not be running at 80-100% for an extended period of time, that means the damn thing can't breathe! It might seem daunting at first, but just follow the video carefully and take your time. The PS4 is honestly one of the more easier consoles to take apart. *IMPORTANT*: Clean your fan and heatsink first (look up another video for the heatsink as reference) and see if that helps. Don't replace your thermal paste unless you absolutely have to. Removing and reapplying thermal paste is tricky and is easy to screw up.

WARNING : STEP 2 removing Blue Ray @6:00 ... when removing the drive cable DON'T LIFT the metal clip like he says. Push Down on it GENTLY with your fingertip and the cable will easily slide out. Lifting it will damage the locking mechanism. ... He made a mistake...do not PULL up on the clip at step 2 ...don't pull the clip when removing the ribbon cable for the blue-ray. just push gently down on the metal clip and the cable will slide out. Good tutorial though. I recomend you use something like "Arctic Mx-2 thermal paste". It's not expensive and It has high conductivity which is what you want. Be careful not to buy cheap stuff with low conductivity as it won't help or might even be worse that whats on it.

Yea, wish he would do an annotation of that part because the push down is a million time better than the push up method. Luckily, it's that locking edge doesn't have any connectors if you do manage to fuck up your cable.

Just wanted to say thank you for this video. I have an original ps4 CUH 10001. I was having overheating issues when I took it apart there was literally 1 inch of dust stuck on the back of the heat sink and the thermal paste was dry and flaky. I replaced the fan and used Arctic MX4 thermal paste. I swear its quieter than when I first got it in 2014. All high processing games like fortnite cod4 and rdr2 run quiet as mice.

if its anything like the xbox one elite I did the other day then definitely. when I stripped it there was only minor traces of dust inside the case and the heatsink and fan looked suspiciously clean for a day one console which had been quite happily humming along in my loungeroom since, but the thermal compound was absolutely disgusting! it was like chalk it was so dry. after replacing it with some 6 year old arctic ceramique 2 I had laying around it's almost impossibly quiet, but I've done lots of x360S consoles in the past resulting in the fan at idle being quieter than the hdd itself so its kinda expected

@fuktheserbs have you ever done a thermal compound replacement on a console? The difference it makes is genuinely that big a deal. With my aforementioned xbox 360 consoles and xbox one, the only way to know the fan is actually working is by the breeze coming out of it at idle, and they occasionally become slightly audible during gaming as the cooling solutions are quite adequate. Unfortunately for most console owners, the thermal compound that is originally used is horribly sub-par I get that the fan is always technically making a noise, but at the base of the fan curve it simply isn't loud enough to be heard over the HDD and optical drives

I did this a week or so ago and it fixed my hairdryer PS4 Slim completely. It's sad that most people won't be confident enough to do it, however. Sony are intentionally using awful thermal paste to get people to 'chase' a quiet console. No wonder mid-generation releases are such a huge thing now - some people might even buy 3 or 4 versions of a console. Sneaky as hell - don't let 'em get you.

After getting sick of my PS4 v1 sounding like a 747 preparing for take off, in the end something had to be done............................... It was so noisy in order to drown out the racket i had to turn the TV up to the point that the wife was coming downstairs at night telling me to turn it down !! So I took the plunge and stripped it down dusted it out and reapplied thermal paste. I've built many PCs but never a PS4. Following your article made this process a lot easier. Yes you have to be very careful with the screws its very easy to miss one ! One thing i would add is that while its stripped down the Thermal pads could also be replaced as one of mine was damaged in the process. Now its like new again and pretty much whisper quiet !!! Top Job.

Came here to say, I did this and I can't believe my ps4 is now very silent. To me the only hard part was to unplug the power cable, because it was so tight and hard to pull out. I thought I'd broke the cable or the socket from the board. I literally gave up at first, but somehow I managed to do it. The rest was easy for me. All I want to say is thanks for this video. This is probably the best ps4 thermal paste replacement video on YT. Cheers for uploading this mate!

You don't need any special thermal paste remover or cleaner or prep solution. Just use plain rubbing alcohol, it will remove all the old paste.Also, if you don't want confusion when replacing the screws. Use different colored sharpie markers and mark the screw and cover before removing them. Like use red for top screws and black for bottom screws etc.. Just take the marker and mark top of screw and on the cover right next to each screw. This will color code the screws for you, can also do it to each wire if you want.

Your PS4 is 90% identical to mine so I can't thank you enough for making this video. I did have some problems replacing the thermal paste, and this is more for others' than you. If you aren't able to remove the wires that connect the power bar to the motherboard (like I did), it's not impossible to get in there still. Be careful in maneuvering the power bar (package of sponges saved my life) and and when you flip it over to access the top, *two things*: 1) if there's a small black screw (think it was a philips) behind the power bar's wires, nearly against the casing, imbedded in the motherboard, for the love of jesus, remove it; it's anchoring the motherboard to the top metal plate, and 2) do not secure the power bar into the two prongs if you choose to slide it back in when flipping (I recommend this for the wiggle room, and it's how I did it). You're not going to have much room to work with under the mother board, and getting the prongs free shouldn't be a task you want to suffer while trying to be mindful of the power bar's wires. If this is potentially your situation, get an applicator for the paste. You will absolutely be working upside down. I didn't have the luxury of an extra set of hands to help me, but if you have some, you are going to want them. But this video was extremely helpful! I know you disclaimed it at the beginning with 'only do this if you're comfortable handling shit like this', but I was at my wits end. It wasn't about the noise; I couldn't *play* because my ps4 was constantly overheating when the temperature got above 70 F and it was at its worst this summer, requiring colder and colder until it was demanding winter if I wanted to play anything. It's been a few days now, and it's fine!

I've taken apart my OG PS4 before to clean the fan and took apart my gaming laptop a few times, even repasted it. So I knew what to expect and I was prepared. Considering my PS4 is almost 6 years old since purchase, I knew it needed a repaste. Playing games like Modern Warfare, Red Dead 2... or more recently AC Valhalla and Cyberpunk. Have been making my PS4 run very loud. Not too loud that I find it unbearable, but loud. And after replacing the Thermal Paste. It performs and sounds like a young and new ps4. I did not expect it to sound so quiet, you can barely hear the fan noise and its brilliant. I used Arctic MX-4 thermal paste that I already had used previously for my PC. The outcome blew me away and I have never been happier about my PS4 running smooth and quiet. I thank you for making this video. It was very detailed and informing to watch. Holy shit thanks so much. This really works if its too loud. Mine got so ridiculous that my ps4 would say its too hot and the blu light would turn red and itll shut down. After doing this my p4 is way quieter but not soundless. I used a different thermal gel i used the insignia one from best buy it cost about 10$. And i used nail polish remover from my sister to remove the old paste. Btw if yiu dont rmmbr where the screws go theres usually small tiny arrows pointing to where they should go. Amazing vid thanks so much. Been two days now and still running like new.

As a laptop tech I have to say that the job was completed correctly. That being said I do have a few things I would like to add to save others future issues and a few dollars. For the record these will be no-brainers. First of all if you are going to take a system apart take the extra ten minutes to clean it before reassembling it. There was still a good amount of dust on the board and those particle can tend to collect charges that can just attract more dust. Second, don't waste money on fancy chemicals and cleaners. Just use 995 ALCOHOL over the the whole things and a nylon brush to remove things like hair and other debris. Oh for the record, paper towels are; fine as I use the all the time and never had and problem. Still, if you are worried and ESD just ground yourself before you start and you will be fine. An easy way to do this if you don't have a strap is to connect a wire to the center screw of a grounded outlet. with the other end other wire striped to you can grab it, Done. Last but not least, take a few extra second to flip and reattach the thermal pad directly to the ram chips on the board because when you remove the board from the pads you are breaking the seal just like the thermal past on the GPU and that is just a little counter productive. Just my two cents but a good video overall.

I followed these steps changing the thermal paste with a cheap thermal paste I had for years, and btw i also cleaned up the fan heatsink which had a layer of 1cm of dust (yes literally), after all that I turn on the ps4 and i thought that the fan doesn't work so much it was silent, even trying fortnite it was still quiet even better than a brand new ps4! I did this to my PS4 when it started over heating and turning off because the fan wasn't working. I changed the Thermal Paste and the fan since the bering was gone. The fan would go on loud AF. Once I opened up the PS I found out the fan was wabbly. 4 days later of constant use and the PS is running like new. I can't hear the fan at all. Very Satisfied with the outcome. I had never opened the system to clean it from dust since I bought it back when it had just came out. PS used sound like a Jet Engine

Cheers for the reassembly guide at the end of the video. All too often people just strip it and then you're left trying to reverse engineer it; though I do wish it was a little more in-depth as I had to figure out a few bits, plus I came away with 2 silver screws, a small phillips screw, and a slightly larger phillips one. One problem I had was that I didn't have the torx screwdrivers with a hole in, so I had to alternate between a phillips, a flat head, and a regular torx to get the screws out... took ages! However, the fans are considerably quieter (it sounded like a hair dryer before) and I couldn't have done it without you! Thank you so much!

Thanks for this video, just got myself a PS4 and will be digging into it this weekend. A word of advice though, try not to apply so much paste, think of it like a small sheet of conductivity and the more surface area between the heatsink and CPU the better. I usually go for a small central dot and then evenly apply pressure between the heatsink and CPU. Ideally you will end up with an even circle with as equal diameter to the heatspread/die as you can. Thanks again! Did you notice much improvement in noise after reapplying? (had to watch the video muted at the time of commenting).
@MenWhoStareAtGames
@MenWhoStareAtGames 8 жыл бұрын
+Douglas Yeaman (Dooglet) Yeah I know such a hot topic - watching the video back I would have applied less, but hey camera nerves and all. Cisco recommend an "X" shape with a tiny dot at NSEW, some say to spread/flatten it with a credit card, some say...oh the madness. I know less is more and the idea is to have a VERY thin layer really you are just trying to conduct heat efficiently from the CPU to the heatsink, so a thin layer is best. It was a load better after the new paste though. Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts mate :)

Any legally knowledgeable people here? I dunno about the USA specifically, but in other countries the warranty isn't REALLY void when you open a device (break seals), unless the manufacturer is able to PROVE that the damage was done specifically by your opening of the system. And by putting the seals and warnings all over the place all the companies are just trying to cover their asses and intimidate you into not touching your system, because it's convenient to them.

The only thing I would add would be if you're going to clean your fan since you got everything apart make sure to do it unplugged if you're going to allow the fan to spin or gently push the fan with your finger down to keep it from moving if you're using compressed air I've heard of instances where the fan spinning still hooked up to the motherboard with the use of compressed air was able to generate enough electricity to back feed the circuit and fry shit lol

First I would check that the blue ribbon cable is attached correctly at both ends, are you able to eject using the controller? select game from menu, press options button then eject disc.

1st of all I wanna say thank you for the tutorial! Was pretty easy to follow you :) My Ps4 is running smooth again - my girlfriend loves it XD I have one Problem maybe someone can help me out with it: I did all the Steps, imo i did everything fine and nothing broke BUT my PS does not connect to my controller! The controller is working fine on my PC and MAC, i did every option to connect it (via usb, with the small button on the controller, new controller etc). Anyone got the same problem? Did i broke something? Maybe someone has a solution for me :) Thanks for reading the long text and have a nice day!

Perhaps pressing the small button on the back of the controller. You do need a needle or a push pin to do so.

Yup changed my thermal paste shit is loud like a jet but really not dangerously hot at all..the noise is pretty scary but its nice

I think so too Sony probably made the first PS4 become so loud on purpose so that you have to get another if you eventually wanna fix the noise. Otherwise you'll have to live with a jet in ur room

Great video! You're instructions were clear and easy to follow. My PS4 went from sounding like a jet engine in many games to nice and quiet.

my blue ray player doesn't accept a disk any more, nor does the eject button recognize my finger touching it anymore. i think it has something to do with the flat silver cable. at 7:47 you mention that you have to raise the little metal clip, to release it, but i think this may be the culprit to my problem. about a week ago Michael Siebert said that you just have to push down slightly on them to release the cable.

if you check the condition of the ends they should look like a T shape, I'm sorry if there is confusion, in my model the clips are supposed to be lifted slightly to release the cable, perhaps there is a difference with other designs? I can't see why pushing down would help you release them, but it depends on where he expects you to push down. What I showed in the video worked for me. Sorry if its not worked out for you, but even with that you should be able to sit them in the right place. Open her up and try again :)

iyes those little ear clips were broken afteri pulled it out. its a delicate little clip thats for sure. i searched for and bought a new ribbon cable and it works now. that is odd that they would change the way the cable is anchored in

MenWhoStareAtGames Sir, what is your PS4 model?
Does what Thermal Paste you use, REALLY matter?
