PSV Eindhoven 2 v 3 Rangers - European Cup 1978

Rangers inflicted PSV's first ever european home defeat with a 3-2 win in Eindhoven in the European Cup. Goals from Alex MacDonald, Derek Johnstone and Bobby Russell secured a famous win.

I was working in Holland then and got a ticket right in the centre of the stand opposite the Rangers support. I was the only Bluenose in the stand. What a night! The match had barely kicked off when they scored and I saw the electronic scoreboard record van der kerkhof 34 secs - that was how quick they scored! We came back though with lots of character to win with Derek Johnstone's thunderbolt and Bobby Russell's goal the icing on the cake. The team couldnt fly back to Glasgow that night because of fog - I was flying home the next afternoon from Schiphol and had the great pleasure to meet the whole team. Fanbloodytastic!!

I'm a 52 year-old lifelong Celt and absolutely love this. Rangers' third goal is sublime, and along with the first, shows the genius of Tommy McLean, who was never properly appreciated. And I agree with MegaLochgelly that this side could have won the European Cup. Would have been some match v Forest, who did win it.

@@dianestewart7178 Thanks, Diane. Nice one. There were some great Rangers players then, especially McLean, Russell, DJ and Cooper. Going back in the 70s, I haven't heard if Rangers are planning anything in 2022 to commemorate 1972. I hope so - it was a brilliant triumph. It is sad you lost the Cup Winners' Cup Final in 1967 - to have both the Old Firm win a European trophy would have been amazing for Glasgow and Scotland.

Great memories of my first european games, first game was the home game vs Juventus then PSV at home and then Cologne, too young to go to the away matches but what a trio of games . Thanks for posting this one.

My Favourite Rangers game of all time. I watched it on tv as a 13 yr old and if memory serves me right PSV were formidable having not been beaten at home for 3 yrs. Great Rangers start as usual! Ally should have taken the entire lot of them to Argentina. Those Guys are Gods!

In the next rd v. Cologne GERS had enough chances at Ibrox to go to semi sure it was Billy Urquarht who missed a string of chances.Was at 1st rd 2nd leg v Juv who had 9 of the Italian squad in their 13. Think it would have been Forest in semi.

I was 19 and hitched hiked from the Paisley Road to Hull for a ferry to Europort or some place, we managed, me and my mate managed to get to Eindhoven. long story. I had an army surplus big eff off bag full of tins of beans and stuff and a gas burner thing. . In the Rangers end there was over head heating from the roof.I may be mistaken but thats what we thought at the time.

The only problem was the South Mollucan blokes next to you going into their pockets to check their blades every bloody five minutes.These blokes were scary looking. Anyway, After the game the fans were going so mental, I mean us, that John Greig walked behind the goal and asked us to calm down. Afterwards there was not one bit of trouble. The Dutch treated us amizingly well. We slept i n bars and railway staions but made it home in time
